TORI’S POV
I stood still, struggling to process what I just heard! The midwife is dying? Is my baby okay?
The nurse pulled me and we quickly ran to where the midwife was. She lay in a room, looking like a shadow of herself. Her whole body was banged like a mommy.
“Oh my God!” I gasped, wondering how the midwife that attended to me some hours ago was looking like this.
“You’re probably wondering what happened but I had an accident. I know I’m goin to die soon. I can see angels already and that is why I must tell you this before I die,” she said and gave out a loud cough.
“I’m listening,” I said eagerly.“The truth is, you gave birth to a boy. Miss Riley ordered me to switch the baby and kill him,”
“What!” I covered my mouth in shock, as the news stung my ears and tears rolled down my eyes.
“I’m so sorry, but Mrs Riley threatened me and my family, including the doctors. She even held the doctor’s daughter hostage. I couldn’t kill your baby! I wouldn’t be able to live with that, so I gave him out to a distressed lady who had been visiting the gynaecologist for years,”
“This can’t be happening,” I shook my head, careful not to cry too much because of my stitches.
The mid-wife coughed loudly again and she started struggling to breathe. I pressed the bell close to her bed in order to alert the nurses of an emergency.
“Please, hold on. You’ll be fine, okay?”
“No,” she shook her head as sweat poured down her face. “My hour has come, and I have accepted that it is a punishment for my sins. The name of the lady is Tamara, you can ask nurse Bibi to help you locate her. I’m so sorry,” She gave her last cough and died.
I watched her grow cold as doctors and nurses rushed in to try and revive her but they didn’t succeed. She passed away immediately.
I walked out of the room and only then did I remember my kids but luckily, Bill was with them, waiting for me. I immediately hugged them and rushed back to my room to meet my baby who was being looked after by the nurse, well I guess she wasn’t really mine.
I held the baby close to me as tears poured down my face and a tear touched the baby’s, while Bill looked at me in confusion.
“Are you okay?” He asked, concern written on his face.
“My life is a mess,” I whispered, the hurt choking my heart. Luckily, my baby was sleeping peacefully despite the noise, and I put her back in my cot.
I narrated my situation from the beginning to the end and I watched him clench his fist as his eyes reddened in anger.
“Your husband is a bastard! Sorry to call him that but he’s really a beast,”
There was a knock on the door and someone came in, I recognized him immediately.
“Good day, Mrs Victoria. Alpha Victor sent me to look for you and I’m glad I’ve finally found you. I’m sorry to say this in your condition, but the divorce papers are ready and he wants you to sign them immediately!”
