Chapter 3

Author: Stars
On the phone, Jim's voice was frantic. "Where are you? Don't you know our marking ceremony is coming up? How can you be running around like this right now?

"Send me your location. I'll come pick you up."

I didn't send my location, but Jim still tracked me down using my phone's GPS.

Seeing me emerge from the wasteland covered in dirt and grime, he frowned first.

"Why'd you let yourself get like this?"

I didn't answer. Having just endured the most devastating blow of my life, I was like a soulless shell.

Jim sighed. "I know you're upset, and I was wrong about this. I'll investigate and clear your father's name. Come home with me first."

I numbly lifted my head and stared at the wolf who'd caused my father's death. "If we proceed with the marking ceremony, my father would be your father-in-law.

"He didn't leak the pack's secrets."

For a split second, my tear-filled eyes seemed to stir something in him, but the next moment, Kelly grabbed his arm in a panic.

"Jim, I was just too anxious. The stuff in the secret file is too important to me. If it gets leaked, I–"

She covered her mouth and couldn't continue. Her eyes brimmed with tears.

Jim pulled her into his arms to comfort her. He then turned to face me. "Do you know what was in that secret file? Kelly's private photos. If they get leaked, her reputation is ruined. As a she-wolf yourself, you should relate to how she feels."

It hit me like a thunderbolt. My mind was spinning.

Jim had exiled Frank to the wasteland over Kelly's private photos. He let Frank be tortured to death. My family was destroyed all because of what Kelly said.

Kelly handed me the things in her hand.

"We know the conditions here are rough, so we bought the most expensive food for him. After all, he's your father. We can't let him suffer, can we?"

Kelly's smile hurt my eyes.

I slapped the offerings out of her hand. "I don't need your fake sympathy," I uttered furiously.

Kelly froze for a moment. Her tears soon fell.

"Rachel, I genuinely came to apologize. I was too hasty before and didn't investigate properly. It was all a misunderstanding."

It was a misunderstanding that cost my father his life.

I clenched my father's wolf fang tightly in my hand and took a step back.

"Fine, since you want to apologize, get on your knees and do it properly."

Jim stepped forward and grabbed my wrist. His tone was cold.

"Rachel, haven't you caused enough trouble? Kelly wouldn't even come to this godforsaken place if not for you, and now you're deliberately making things hard for her."

Kelly placed her hand on Jim's arm. Her eyes welled up with tears. "Jim, don't be mad at Rachel. It's all my fault. I deserved getting those private photos taken. I shouldn't even show my face around you two."

With that, she ran off without looking back.

The overwhelming shock and exhaustion hit me hard. A wave of dizziness washed over me, my legs buckled, and I fainted.

I seemed to fall into a warm embrace. I vaguely heard someone shouting nearby, but I couldn't make out the words.

When I woke up again, I was in a bed in a healer's den.

Jim was slumped by my bed. He was holding my hand and fast asleep.

Sensing movement on the bed, he jerked awake. Seeing that I was conscious, he let out a relieved sigh.

"You suddenly fainted. Do you have any idea how worried I was?"

Not wanting to look at him, I turned away.

"Even if you're mad, you need to take care of your health. Once you recover, I'll take you home."

I stayed silent but noticed the wolf fang was gone.

I searched anxiously but couldn't find it.

"Where's my stuff?" I asked.

It was the last memento my father left me.

"That wolf fang? I already had someone take it home and store it safely. Once you're better, we'll go home."

I couldn't win the argument, so I went home with him.

The next time I saw Jim was on my way home from work. For days, he'd been silently watching me along my usual route home. I'd noticed him long ago but pretended not to.This was our first real encounter. He lowered his head and struggled to speak after a long while. "Can I visit Father's grave?"I shook my head. "You don't get to call him that."You know, Dad held on with his last breath just to explain himself to you, but you never showed up."My heart ached as I spoke, and my eyes welled with tears. "Now that he's dead, you want to visit his grave? What were you doing before?"Each word stabbed Jim like a knife. It was hard for him to even breathe. He couldn't meet my eyes. He knew they'd be coldly terrifying."I know I was wrong. I don't expect forgiveness, but please take this."He held out a card."My life savings. I know it can't make up for my mistakes, but it eases my conscience."My hands trembled as I held the card."I've lost my only family. Money means nothing

With everyone in the crowd pointing fingers at Kelly, she finally broke down crying."It's not like that, Jim. No she-wolf would sacrifice her own reputation to frame someone else. When I found out my private photos were stolen, I panicked and just–"Kelly knew from experience that no matter what she'd done wrong, Jim would forgive her if she cried. But this time, he didn't comfort her. He stepped back and looked at her coldly. He then played another video. It showed her talking to a wolf."I'll tell Jim someone leaked my private photos to smear the pack's reputation. I've already planted the evidence on Rachel's father's phone. Just follow my instructions to leak them."I'll have the day's surveillance wiped. Don't worry. Once it's all done, you'll get plenty of reward."She'd thought her plan was flawless, but Jim had recovered the deleted footage with tech."So how do you explain this? Kelly, drop the act. The evidence is ironclad. What else do you have to say?"Kelly look

Kelly looked at Jim sincerely. Her eyes brimmed with expectation. With how things had unfolded, even the elder preparing to officiate the vows quietly wiped sweat from his forehead.Today's guests included not just pack members but many external Alphas. The success of this marking ceremony directly impacted the pack's future.Besides, no one really cared who the Luna was.Fearing Jim's refusal, the elder whispered, "Alpha, Kelly's family is far wealthier than Rachel's. With all these distinguished guests here, you can't let them leave without a positive outcome. Just say yes."With the elder's backing, the werewolves off stage got excited."Do it! Say yes! Say yes!"Cheers surged like waves.Jim lowered his gaze for a long moment. Only when Kelly's smile began to stiffen did he slowly approach her."I've been waiting for you too. Since Rachel didn't show up, swapping Lunas is no big deal."Kelly, will you complete the marking ceremony with me and become my mate?"Kelly's eye

At that moment, Jim felt the world spinning. Thinking back to my calls from before, he realized he hadn't taken them seriously at the time.He couldn't bear to imagine the despair I was going through while watching my father's life slip away or how powerless I felt."Are you sure that was Rachel's father?" he asked. The guard nodded. "Yes, we overheard them talking. Before he died, he gave her a wolf fang."At the mention of the wolf fang, Jim recalled the day I'd slapped Kelly over it.Only now did he realize it was the last keepsake from my father. But what had he done?Jim staggered, and his voice trembled. "W-What about his body?""Rogue corpses get dumped in the wasteland."Without a word, Jim drove deep into the wasteland. He sped recklessly while muttering to himself. "No way. There's just no way. With so many rogues here, they must've mixed it up."The wasteland's depths hid a mountain of corpses. Most rogues ended up here after dying. Some were reduced to bones afte

Up to the day before our supposed marking ceremony, I still didn't show up.Jim, who was waiting impatiently for me to try on my ceremonial gown, kept checking his watch. That was when Kelly walked over in a ceremonial gown, twirled in front of him, and said, "How do I look in this dress? It's this late and Rachel still hasn't come. Maybe she ran off. Why don't I be your mate instead?"Jim's heart sank. He had no interest in Kelly's flirting. His mind was consumed with why I hadn't appeared yet."She even dreams of having the marking ceremony with me. She wouldn't leave over something so trivial."But the more he thought, the stronger his unease grew. There was a nagging feeling that something terrible was about to happen. He retrieved his phone, hesitated for a moment, and dialed my number."Rachel, where are you? Do you have any idea–"Before he could finish, the cold mechanical tone cut him off. It notified him that my phone was powered off.Jim froze in place. He opened ou

After opening the door, I found Kelly lounging on the couch in my nightgown while eating grapes. When she saw me, she smiled. "Rachel, you're back?"She acted as if she were the lady of the house.Jim explained, "Kelly's rental lease expired, and she had nowhere to stay, so I let her crash here for now. You don't mind, do you?"Of course I didn't mind. What he did or who he lived with had nothing to do with me anymore. All I wanted now was to retrieve my father's keepsake and leave this place for good."Where's my stuff?" I asked."I had Kelly put it in your bedroom. Look for it yourself."I turned around and went into the bedroom. It was crammed full of junk. There wasn't even space to stand.I searched from dawn till dusk, turning the entire room upside down, but still couldn't find it.Just as I was about to ask Jim again, I heard Kelly's voice from outside."I accidentally cut my finger today. I heard grinding a wolf fang into powder and applying it to the wound heals it
