Maya's POV.

“A joke?” The alpha got in front of me on our way out of his living room.

“A joke? Is that seriously all you have to say?”

I swallowed hard, greasing my parched throat for the rest of the words to come.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

‘Tell him it's because you have trust issues.’ Melissa whispered in my thoughts. ‘Tell him it's because you were rejected before.’

I moved my lips to speak but the words rolled to the back of my throat.

“Speak!” Alpha William grew impatient.

“The seer says we were destined for each other. Do you really believe in that nonsense?”

“Nonsense?” He raised an eyebrow. “You call that nonsense?”

My stomach sank. My words weren't intended to be as deep as he was taking them.

“No one was made for another. Werewolves don't have soulmates.” I answered.

“The seer is trying to fool us.”

Alpha William looked at me one last time before he nodded and walked away.

I watched as he continued, not a single glance at me until he was at his door, then, with a sharp pull at his doorknob, William walked in and banged his door in my face, it's frame reverberating through the entire building.

I felt a strong pull in my wolf. Melissa was disappointed at me, pissed that I had said that to my mate.

“Why?” She questioned.

“I'm saving us.”

“Saving us from what?” She cried. “William has been so good to you and you know he's a good man. How could you even say that?”

Perhaps she was too excited to remember, or maybe she had truly forgotten, but I didn't. I still recalled the pain of Alpha Thomas’ rejection and how terribly it stung.

The Alpha king rejecting me again would shatter me, I knew that for sure, and that was why I needed confirmation before I allowed my heart to love him.

“We need time.” I told Melissa. My wolf still stirred, her anger still present, but there was nothing she could do.

“Tone it down girl,” I told her. “If it's meant to be, it will be.”

Looking back at that moment, I wish I hadn't said that to the alpha.

He changed from that second.

*****

“Alpha Williams.” I greeted.

The alpha had his eyes glued to his phone, his mind distant from the present as he walked right past me.

“Alpha.” I called again, my voice holding more depth this time.

Still, he didn't say a word. Didn't acknowledge my greeting.

“Alpha!” I closed the distance between us.

“Alpha! Can you hear me?”

It wasn't until I poked the Alpha by his side that he lifted his eyes from his phone and glanced at me.

A glance so quick, I almost missed it.

“Yeah. Good morning.” And then he continued with his way.

I stood there, baffled by his abrupt answer. Alpha Williams was never this way with me.

“It's all your fault you know.” Melissa’s whisper intruded again. “God apologize to him for what you said. Tell him you didn't mean it.”

“But it's not like I said something insulting.”

“No. But it wasn't a compliment either. You must have shrunk his pride. You need to apologize. Go talk to him before it gets worse.”

I blinked away her words, shrugging slightly as I swirled to my direction too. The walls of my stomach cramped up with guilt but on the surface, I acted freer than a kite.

“You might regret this, Maya.”

“I won't.”

***

Crack!

A spoon from a maid’s hand tumbled off the dinning table and crashed into the tiled floor, spilling food on the alpha's pants.

“I'm so sorry.” She stammering while her knees kissed the floor, wipe in her hand fastly trying to take the stain out.

The Alpha glanced at me at the other end of the dinning table for a moment before he tilted his head to her.

“Its fine. Clear the table, I will not eat anymore.”

“He's really mad at you. Apologize now before it gets too late.” Melissa reminded me.

My voice dropped with sob tears from the maid and then the screech from the alpha's chair as he adjusted it backwards and walked out on us.

“You fool!” Melissa screamed, “Apologize now or you're going to make things very bad for us.”

“I remember the seer saying you could walk through fire.” I mocked her, “I don't remember her saying anything about you seeing visions, besides I didn't do anything wrong.”

I continued with the meal served for the night, sipping my soup gently with the piece of bread in hand.

The rest of my dinner was spent with Melissa yelling at me to go apologize to the alpha, but my behind was glued to the chair.

If anything, he was supposed to be the one apologizing to me.

What did I do?

******

The day that followed was a quiet one. The birds didn't chirp at sunrise like they always did. The sun didn't filter into my eyes and the cocks didn't crow that loudly.

The day started off quiet and was that way until mid noon, then the commotion started.

From the balcony of my room, I watched as maids rushed in and out of the mansion with items.

Beddings, new pillows, brooms, toilet cleaners, perfume and even new sets of curtains.

One maid told me it was for the Alpha's new guest that was arriving, when I called her to the side for chitchat.

“Any idea who it is?”

She swung her head slowly, hiding just beside the flower bush that shielded both of us enough to talk.

“But she's someone important.”

“She?”

Melissa stirred again. “This isn't funny, Maya. Go apologize to the Alpha now.”

Her words watered down when the maid kept talking.

“The guards say she will be coming into today by early evening and we're asked to clean the alpha's room for her.”

His room?

I felt a sting to my stomach as the realization of what that meant sank in. They were sharing a room.

“What's her name?” I leaned in closer, my eyes wide with curiosity, my throat dry and my hands feverish.

It could be his sister for all I knew.

But on second thought, the Alpha had no sisters.

So who?

Maya’s POVI sat on my bed, twisting the hem of my dress between my fingers. My mind had been circling the same thought over and over again—Sarah. Her voice from the woods still echoed in my head, I had memories of all the times we were children and how much she hated me.I thought of the way she acted even when we were teenagers.I tried to think back to the time when we lived together. How did I miss that she was a witch? It made my skin crawl.I should have felt relief that I finally had proof of her betrayal, but instead, fear gnawed at me. Sarah wasn’t just my step sister. Alpha Williams’ POVThe maid Maya had whispered to me about—Sarah’s maid. She was smaller than I expected, wiry, her eyes darting like a cornered animal.I had the guards catch her when she was on her way out. She sneaked past the first gate but my men took her at the second.“She tried to slip through the eastern gate,” one of my men growled, shoving her forward. “Would’ve gotten away if not for the patrol.”I folded my arms, studying her. “You’ve been sneaking out at night often, haven’t you?”The maid tried to straighten, feigning calm. “I…I was only going to fetch herbs for Lady Sarah. She hasn’t been well.”I stepped closer, letting the full weight of my presence roll over her. “Lie to me again,” I said quietly, “and I’ll have your head on a spike before dawn.”Her throat bobbed. She tried to move, but the guards held her still. The scent of fear clung to her like sweat.“Take her to the red room,” I ordered. “I’ll deal with her myself.”---The room was dark save for the torchli

Maya’s POVMy palms were damp. My throat felt like sandpaper, but I forced myself to look him in the eye.“Alpha,” I began softly, “I don’t think you were desperate for wanting to kiss me.”His brows lifted, confusion flashing in his dark eyes.“Excuse me?”“I know that's how you feel, but you don't need to worry about that. I didn’t know how to handle it.”He stiffened slightly, as if I had dropped a secret too heavy for the air between us.“I’m a virgin,” I admitted, voice trembling but determined. “So when you leaned close, I panicked.
