Chapter Twenty-eight

Sleep didn’t come easy after Callen’s lesson. His words kept echoing in my head, stillness in chaos. I didn’t know why they bothered me so much, but they did. By morning, the thought still hadn’t left.

When the bell rang again, I joined the others heading toward the training field. The air felt heavier today, thick with something like tension. No one was talking. Even Jace looked more focused than usual.

By the time I reached the field, most of the students were already there. The ground had been marked with white circles, ten of them spread across the sand. Master Callen stood in the center, arms folded behind his back. His face gave nothing away.

“Form a line,” he said.

We moved without a word, boots crunching softly against the dirt. Jace took his place beside me, shoulders squared.

Callen’s gaze swept over us. “Instinct Trials,” he said. “You’ve heard the name. Now you’ll learn its meaning.”

He began pacing between the lines. “This is not about fighting. It is about control. You w

The morning bell echoed through the barracks before the sun fully rose. The air held a crisp bite, enough to make breath visible. By the time I reached the training hall, the others were already gathering—ten of us, standing in two uneven lines as Master Callen entered. “Good,” he said, glancing over us. “At least you all remembered how to be on time.” His tone carried no warmth, but no irritation either. Just that steady authority that made people listen. He placed a stack of thin wooden sticks on the front table, and every sound in the hall seemed to fade. “Theory will only take you so far,” he said. “Today, we test your instincts.” My stomach tightened. Around me, some students straightened; others shifted uneasily. Jace shot me a quick look that said, this doesn’t sound fun. Master Callen picked up one of the sticks and twirled it once between his fingers. “Each of you will face a simple challenge,” he said. “You’ll walk to the center of the room, and I’ll try to strike you.

“Everyone, take your seats,” Master Callen said as he entered the room. The hall smelled faintly of chalk and dust. Rows of wooden desks filled the space, and light poured from tall windows behind him. It was our first class in the barracks, and everyone looked tense. Ten of us sat in two neat rows, our posture straight, our hands on the desks. No one spoke. The silence pressed against the walls.Master Callen set a few scrolls on the table in front of him. He was older than most of the instructors I had seen before, his dark hair streaked with gray, his gaze sharp enough to make everyone sit taller. He didn’t need to raise his voice. His presence alone did the work.“Today,” he began, “we will talk about leadership and control. Two things that separate a wolf from a beast.”The sound of a chair creaked somewhere in the back, but no one dared move again. Jace sat beside me, his hand tapping lightly against his knee. It was the only sound close enough to break the tension.Master Calle

Aria's POV The hall was quiet when we arrived. Lira led the way, carrying a small tray of keys. “Here we are,” she said. “The barracks. You’ll be staying here from today.” I looked down the corridor. Plain doors lined each side. Torches flickered lightly, throwing shadows on the stone walls. It felt bigger than any hall I had seen so far. Jace leaned against the doorway. “This is it? Looks… serious.” “It’s the further part of the academy,” I said. “They moved us here for more intense lessons.” “Intense lessons,” he repeated, letting out a low whistle. “Sounds like fun already.” Lira smiled faintly. “You two will have separate rooms. Here, take your key, Aria. Room seven. And Jace, room ten. The others will find theirs along the hall.” I took the key and ran my fingers over the cold metal. “Thanks.” “You’re welcome.” She looked toward the other students. “Make sure you settle in quickly. Captain Varron will speak to you shortly.” I nodded and followed her down the hall. The o

Lucian's POV Ronan leaned forward on the platform, eyes still on the circle. “That was wild. I thought the dust would swallow half of them before the horn.”“They fought well,” I said.“Well?” He turned to me, one brow raised. “That was better than well. Did you see the one with the short sword? Nearly took down two wolves at once.”“He relied on speed, not awareness,” I said. “He would not last in a real fight.”“Still impressive,” Ronan said. “And that girl…” He paused, gaze shifting toward her. “What was that at the end? For a second I thought the ground moved.”“It was quick,” I said quietly.“Quick?” He scoffed. “It looked like the air cracked around her. One moment she was down, then she stood like she owned the field.”“You noticed too much,” I said.“I notice everything,” Ronan said, grinning. “It is my job. You, on the other hand, stared long enough to miss three eliminations.”“You talk too much,” I said.He smirked. “You are avoiding the question.”“There was no question.”

Aria’s POVThe horn had barely stopped echoing when another growl broke the air.“Keep your guard up!” Jace shouted over the noise.I spun around just in time to block a strike. My staff clashed against another with a hard crack that sent a sting up my arms. The circle was wild now, full of dust, sweat, and movement. Fifteen of us still stood, maybe less.Someone fell near the edge, and the horn sounded again. Fourteen. My breath came in sharp bursts. The heat of the morning pressed against my skin. I ducked beneath another swing, my body reacting faster than my thoughts. Every move felt sharper, too fast, too focused. It was like my body already knew what to do before I even decided.Focus. Stay in control. The boy in front of me snarled and lunged again. His staff cut through the air. I twisted to the side, letting his swing miss by an inch, then struck his ribs. He staggered back, his foot brushing the edge of the chalk circle. His eyes darted toward the officials, uncertain. That
