The wind at the mountain’s base was a wild thing, biting and untamed.

Serena pulled her coat tighter around her shoulders, the flames within her doing little to shield her from the external cold. Snow crunched underfoot as she and Elias made their way up the shadowed trail winding toward the Coldfang Fortress.

It had been two days since they left the ruins. Two days of near-constant movement, running through moonlit forests, sleeping in caves cloaked in illusion, and fighting off the creeping presence of dark creatures whose forms grew more twisted the closer they got to the Veiled Alpha's awakening.

But none of that shook Serena like the look Elias gave her now and then when he thought she wasn’t watching.

It was more than admiration.

It was fear.

Not of her—but for her.

“You’re quiet,” Elias said, breaking the silence.

“I’m thinking,” she replied.

“Dangerous pastime.”

She smiled faintly but didn’t look at him. “You’re wondering if I’m losing control.”

His footsteps slowed slightly. “I’m wondering how much more of this magic you can absorb before it eats you from the inside out.”

A gust of wind nearly knocked her off balance. She stumbled and Elias caught her waist, steadying her with one arm. His grip lingered, warm and solid.

“You keep me grounded,” she said softly.

He looked down at her. “Do I?”

She nodded. “When it starts to spiral, when the fire wants to burn everything—I think of you.”

He stared at her for a moment longer, then leaned in and pressed a kiss to her forehead. “We’ll get through this. Together.”

They climbed in silence after that, but the silence was comfortable. Charged.

By midday, the path widened into a cliff ledge, revealing the fortress high above them—massive, ancient, carved into the mountain like it had always been there. Tall spires stabbed the sky, and rune-inscribed walls shimmered faintly under the sunlight. The Coldfang Fortress wasn’t just a relic of old power—it hummed with it.

“Home of the last Sentinels,” Elias murmured. “They won’t be happy to see me.”

Serena arched a brow. “Why not?”

“I left without permission. Abandoned the oath. I was supposed to take the High Wolf’s seat—protect the realm. Instead, I chased a rogue Alpha… and found you.”

Her heart thudded. “Do you regret it?”

He looked at her as if the question wounded him. “Not for a second.”

Before she could respond, the air shimmered—and a ring of arrows pointed at their throats. Camouflaged guards stepped from the trees, faces masked in carved bone.

“Halt. Identify yourselves,” the lead guard commanded.

“I am Elias Thorne, ex-Sentinel,” Elias said, raising his hands slowly. “And this is Serena Duskbane, bearer of the Flame.”

A murmur rippled through the guards.

“The cursed one?” one whispered.

“She broke it,” Elias said sharply. “And awoke something worse in the process. We need sanctuary. An audience with the High Watch.”

The guards exchanged glances before the lead one nodded. “Lower your weapons.”

They were escorted through an invisible barrier and into the fortress walls. As they passed into the great hall, Serena’s gaze swept over carved wolf statues, ancient murals depicting war and prophecy, and torches that burned with blue fire. The place felt like power incarnate.

Waiting at the end of the hall was a woman cloaked in silver and blue, hair braided with wolf teeth and frost flowers. Her eyes glowed faintly.

“Elaya Snow,” Elias murmured. “She’s the new High Watch.”

The woman stepped forward. “Elias. Back from exile, I see.”

“Not by choice,” he said, bowing his head. “We come with warning.”

Her gaze flicked to Serena. “The Flame-Bearer.”

Serena felt a pulse of magic pass between them—an assessment.

“She’s unstable,” Elaya said bluntly.

“She’s the only reason we’re still breathing,” Elias replied. “The Veiled Alpha stirs.”

That silenced the entire hall.

Elaya’s expression turned grave. “He cannot rise. The world won’t survive it.”

“We know,” Serena said. “That’s why I need help mastering this power. If there’s even a chance I can stop him, I need to be ready.”

Elaya studied her for a long moment. Then she nodded. “You’ll train with the Lorebound. But be warned—if you falter, if the flame consumes you, we’ll put you down. Kindly, if possible.”

Serena nodded. “Understood.”

Later that night, after settling into her chamber, Serena stood on the fortress balcony, staring out at the snow-covered peaks. Her body felt different—stronger, yes, but not entirely hers. The flame inside her had started to whisper.

“Burn. Break. Reclaim.”

She shivered.

Elias stepped up behind her, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders.

“You always know where I am,” she said, leaning into him.

“Your flame sings to me.”

“That sounds poetic.”

“It’s true.”

They stood there for a while, silent except for the wind. Then Serena turned to him.

“If I don’t make it—”

“Don’t,” Elias said. “Don’t say that.”

“You need to know. I’m not afraid to die. But I’m afraid of leaving you behind. Of not being able to tell you that I—”

He kissed her.

It wasn’t slow. It wasn’t gentle.

It was desperate. Wild. His hands buried in her hair as he backed her into the wall, his lips trailing down her neck. She gasped when he found the spot just beneath her ear.

“I want you,” he growled. “All of you. Flame, fury, everything.”

She moaned, wrapping her legs around his waist as he lifted her. “Then take me.”

And he did.

Right there on the balcony, under moonlight and starlight and the watchful eyes of old gods. They burned together—body and soul. And when it was over, they held each other like the world was ending.

Because in many ways, it already was.

And yet, in each other, they found their reason to fight.

The wind over the valley had changed. It no longer howled or whispered. It simply carried things—memories, fragments of voice, names long buried. The Scar didn’t glow today, but it pulsed. Not a warning. Not a threat. A reminder.Serena sat near the roots of the tree with her back exposed, tracing the new mark etched along her spine with trembling fingers. She wasn’t alone.Elias stood behind her, watching the sigil shift faintly beneath her skin—alive, not just burned. Like it breathed with her.“It’s not just a symbol,” she said softly. “It’s... unfolding. Every time I close my eyes, I see her.”“Imara?”Serena nodded. “And not just her memory. Her choices. Her heartbreak. Her love.”Elias knelt beside her. “The mark is a key.”“And a door,” Serena whispered. “I think I’m unlocking a version of myself that wasn’t allowed to exist before.”She turned to look at him then, really look—through the haze of war and fate and chosen paths.“Are you afraid of what I’m becoming?”Elias didn’t

The sun barely rose that morning. Its light was dim—filtered through layers of fog and ember-streaked mist.Serena stood shirtless before a basin of cold water, her skin bare under the still air. Mira stood silently behind her, watching the fire-marked sigils now burned across her back.It hadn’t been there when she slept. But when she woke, the ache had been deep—bone-deep. And Mira had gasped when she peeled back the blankets.“I’ve seen battle wounds,” Mira whispered. “But this… this isn’t damage. This is design.”The sigil curved like a vine of light over Serena’s spine—glowing faintly golden, etched in symbols no one else recognized. Not even Caine. But Serena felt it.Like a second spine. A memory becoming bone.Kiva ran her fingers over the parchment, cross-referencing ancient maps and runes Caine had unsealed from the Ember Vault.“I think it’s the original mark of the Scarbinders,” she said at last. “But this version is different.”“How?” Elias asked.“This one doesn’t just b

Night in the valley was no longer black. It was ash-colored. Gray and soft like the smoke of old prayers. And under that sky, Serena lay awake, the fire within her no longer raging, but quietly watching. She could feel it now—always watching. The Scar no longer clawed at her veins. But it hadn’t left her untouched either. She wasn’t sure what she had become. Only that the thing inside her had shifted. Softened. Not gone. But something else. She sat up just before dawn. The camp was silent, cloaked in unease. People moved quieter now, more reverently. Like survivors. Like witnesses. Then she heard it—A soft knock on the tent flap.“Come in,” she said.It was the child. The child looked different today.Paler, as if drained by something internal. Its eyes shimmered faint gold—not entirely her power, but borrowed echoes. Its fingers trembled as it handed her something wrapped in cloth.A weight.A message.Serena unfolded it slowly, expecting something like parchment. A letter. Maybe a

  • The Alpha King's Forbidden Mate   Chapter 175: Where Fire Sleeps

The wind howled over the valley as if mourning something ancient. What lay ahead was not a battlefield, not a city. It was a graveyard made of whispers. They stood on the threshold of the Red Scar, and even the most battle-worn among them were silent. The child clutched Serena’s cloak tightly.“This is where the fire went to sleep,” it whispered.Serena nodded slowly. “And where it wants to wake.”The Red Scar looked like a wound carved into the earth itself. No birds flew here. No sound beyond the occasional hum of wind. Trees were petrified—twisted into skeletal spires. Charred roots jutted from cracked soil like bones. The scent of ash was not fresh, but eternal. Time itself had warped in this place.Caine dismounted first, runes blazing faintly along his hands. “The air is folding. Time's crooked here. You’ll feel... stretched.”“Like walking through someone else’s memory,” Mira added.Serena felt it immediately. The pressure. The pull.A voice brushing against her mind—her own vo

  • The Alpha King's Forbidden Mate   Chapter 174: The Burned Path Forward

lThe sky was quiet—too quiet.Even before Serena opened her eyes, she felt it. A pressure in the air. A silence that wasn’t empty but held back. As though the world had exhaled and was refusing to breathe again. She sat up slowly on her bedroll, every joint aching, her skin warm with power that hadn’t cooled overnight. The others were already stirring—Lyra oiling her blades, Mira adjusting the caravan map, and Caine tracing runes into the dirt with a look of deep concentration. But Serena’s focus shifted to the tent across from hers—the one that housed the child. She rose and stepped toward it, her flame already humming.Something had changed.Inside the tent, the child hovered. Its feet were no longer touching the floor. Its palms faced outward, and flame flickered across its fingers like threads of sunlight in water—beautiful, chaotic, barely controlled.Caine stood a few feet away, tense but not intervening.“I didn’t call it,” the child said softly. “It came when I woke up.”Seren

  • The Alpha King's Forbidden Mate   Chapter 173: The Call of the Scar

The ground did not rumble. It shuddered.A slow, deliberate tremor, like a breath drawn by something ancient. Something waiting. From the cliffs surrounding the Spire, a thin red mist began to rise—light as fog, but far more deliberate. It drifted, coiled, and listened. No birds cried. No wolves howled. It was the quiet of something holding its scream.Serena stood on the southern edge, overlooking the plains that stretched toward the western fault. The sky above was no longer blue. It was pale gold, sickly and tense, as though stained by fire that hadn’t reached the ground yet.Behind her, the camp held still. The child sat beneath the central archway, wrapped in a silken shawl Mira had stitched. It didn’t speak. It hadn’t since the vision. But its silver eyes never left Serena. Not once.“They’re coming,” Caine whispered as he stepped beside her.Serena’s jaw tightened. “Who?”“Not the Gate-born. Not yet. But the ones who remember what the Red Scar was.”She turned to him slowly. “T
