EZRA

The air in the clearing was already thick with her fear before she even arrived. I could smell it on the breeze, a sour tang that coiled in my gut. It was the scent of prey, and my own wolf stirred restlessly, eager for the hunt or the fight.

She stepped through the trees, looking smaller and more fragile than the day before. Her failure yesterday had hollowed her out, leaving dark circles under her eyes. Good. Failure should leave a mark.

“You’re on time,” I said. My voice was a flat, hard thing in the quiet woods. “Don’t expect praise for it.”

She just nodded, her jaw clenched. She hugged her arms around herself, a futile attempt to ward off the chill in the air, or maybe the chill that was me.

“Yesterday was a pathetic showing,” I stated, circling her slowly. I moved with a predator’s purpose, letting my presence press in on her. “You whimpered. You gave up. You let the pain win. Today, you won’t.”

“I tried,” she whispered, her voice tight.

“Trying is for children.” I stopped

JACQUELINEBlair's calming words had given me a sliver of peace. We had dusted off our lunch, but none of us were ready to return to class. Blair sat beside me, arms draped loosely around her knees, her presence quiet but grounding. Then her phone rang. She frowned as she pulled it from her pocket. “It’s my mom.”I glanced over, watching her expression as she answered. “Hello?”Her posture stiffened. “Wait, slow down—what do you mean she was hit?”I sat up straighter, my breath catching.Blair stood. “I—I’m coming. I’ll be there as soon as I can.” She hung up and turned to me, pale.“My sister got into an accident. A car hit her—my mom’s freaking out. She’s at the hospital.”“Oh my God.” I stood too, instinctively reaching for her. “Do you want me to come with you?”“No, no,” she said quickly, grabbing her bag. “You’ve got your own mess. I just... I need to go.”“Text me, please?” I said. “Let me know she’s okay.”Blair gave me a tight nod before jogging toward the parking lot, disap

JACQUELINEThe cafeteria smelled like overcooked meat and cheap coffee. Blair and I had decided to grab lunch after our class with Mrs Winterthur. I wasn’t hungry, not after I'd sat through Mr Phillip's class and watched him ignore my entire existence. He hadn't taken one look in my direction, and while that should have made me happy it left me feeling oddly empty... “Hey,” she said, pushing her tray toward me like solidarity. “Mystery salad or prison-grade pasta?”“Don’t make me choose,” I muttered, sliding into the seat across from her. My stomach twisted when I looked at my food. Maybe I could just pick at the salad. It was almost peaceful.Until the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.I didn’t need to turn around. I felt her and smelled her before I saw her. Nina. “She’s here,” Blair said under her breathe, eyes turning to slits as she looked behind me. I didn’t move. I didn’t look. I didn’t want to give her the satisfaction of knowing I noticed. But then I did when I hear

*JACQUELINE*I kept seeing it—his eyes.Yellow. Bright. Unnatural.I had never seen anything like it. The way they burned when he dragged me out of my car earlier, like some ancient warning wrapped in something impossibly human. But that wasn’t real, right? It couldn’t be. I must’ve imagined it. I had to have.Maybe it was the sunlight. Or the adrenaline. Maybe I was so scared I started seeing things that weren’t there. People didn’t just... glow. Eyes didn’t do that.I was spiraling.Again.I sat stiffly in the near-empty lecture hall, arms folded, trying not to draw attention to the way my knees bounced under the desk. The room was quiet except for the faint tick of the wall clock and the sound of Mr. Philips—or Ezra, whatever—flipping through a small stack of papers at the front. He hadn’t said anything to me when I walked in.No smart remarks. No looks. No trace of the man who had once pulled my leggings down and spanked me in my own house. He just nodded once—stoic, unreadable—an

EZRAThe seat was empty again. That made two days in a row.And this time, she had missed the preliminary test. That meant an automatic F. There was no wiggle room, no leniency. Not even if I wanted to give it—which I didn’t. Jacqueline Blackwell had earned this failure with bold, reckless determination. But even as I moved through the test instructions with my usual dispassion, I could feel her.She was here. Somewhere. Her scent was faint at first, but it slithered past the layers of sweat, cheap perfume, and nervous pheromones the other humans exuded. Hers was sharper. Warmer. Distinct in a way that clung to memory like moonlight on blood. My jaw clenched. She was hiding. She was hiding from me.I scanned the classroom as the students scribbled their answers, most of them guessing, if the scent of panic was anything to go by. My eyes roved over them, unamused, increasingly irritated. Their minds were dull today. Slower than usual. Maybe it was the weather, maybe it was the test, or

EZRABeatrice was late.I could already hear the excuses she would try to string together—probably some nonsense about the bus or forgetting her phone. If she even showed up at all.But just as the sun broke through the clouds, she appeared.Jogging toward me in ripped leggings and a faded hoodie, hair tied in a hasty knot and eyes already apologetic.“Twelve minutes late,” I said flatly.“Sorry,” she breathed, doubling over and resting her hands on her knees. “My alarm—”“I don’t care,” I snapped. “There won’t be any leniency in this. You want to survive, you show up. Or die trying.”She swallowed hard and straightened up, nodding silently.I gestured toward the forest behind me. “This is where you’ll train. But before we start, we talk. I need to know how this started. The truth. No bullshit.”Beatrice looked away, jaw clenched. Her fingers twitched at her sides, nails already pressing against her palms as if the memory alone was enough to stir her wolf.I stepped closer, voice low.
