JACQUELINE

Blair's calming words had given me a sliver of peace. We had dusted off our lunch, but none of us were ready to return to class.

Blair sat beside me, arms draped loosely around her knees, her presence quiet but grounding.

Then her phone rang.

She frowned as she pulled it from her pocket. “It’s my mom.”

I glanced over, watching her expression as she answered. “Hello?”

Her posture stiffened. “Wait, slow down—what do you mean she was hit?”

I sat up straighter, my breath catching.

Blair stood. “I—I’m coming. I’ll be there as soon as I can.” She hung up and turned to me, pale.

“My sister got into an accident. A car hit her—my mom’s freaking out. She’s at the hospital.”

“Oh my God.” I stood too, instinctively reaching for her. “Do you want me to come with you?”

“No, no,” she said quickly, grabbing her bag. “You’ve got your own mess. I just... I need to go.”

“Text me, please?” I said. “Let me know she’s okay.”

Blair gave me a tight nod before jogging toward the parking lot, disap

JACQUELINEThe night was still. My room was dark, except for the faint blue glow of the streetlamp filtering through the curtain. I had left the window open just a crack. The breeze slipped in and brushed my skin like a whisper. My sheets tangled around my legs, and I turned over for what felt like the hundredth time. Then sleep came.I don't know when it started. Maybe the moment I closed my eyes. One second I was lying in my bed, and the next, I was trapped in something small and tight. It was dark. Not just dark, but full, like the shadows had weight. I couldn't move. I tried, but my arms pressed against something solid. My knees were bent awkwardly. There was no room to stretch or turn. And worst of all, there was water. It was rising.Cold water filled the tiny space around me. It crept up my neck, into my ears, slid along my scalp. I opened my mouth to scream, and water rushed in. I choked, sputtered, kicked. But there was no space. No air. No escape.I was in a coffin. Underwat

JACQUELINEThe second I got home, I kicked off my heels at the door and let my purse fall onto the couch. My feet ached, my head buzzed faintly, and I couldn’t stop thinking about that awful kiss on the cheek. I wasn’t even sure it had been meant for my cheek; Theo just hadn’t aimed well.I walked to the fridge and pulled out the strawberry yogurt I’d been saving since morning, peeled the lid, and grabbed a spoon from the drawer. My phone buzzed on the counter as I took a bite. Blair’s name flashed across the screen.FaceTime.I pressed answer, chewing as her face came into view. She had one of those charcoal masks on, hair wrapped in a towel, eyes squinting like she already knew how the night had gone.“So,” she said, voice echoing a little. “How’d it go?”I took another spoonful of yogurt and sank onto the couch. “Do you want the good news or the bad news?”Blair made a face. “There was good news?”“Well, he was alive. And he paid for the meal. So technically, I didn’t get stood up

EZRAThe court emptied as the elders shuffled out amidst low murmurs and quiet grumbles. Their footsteps echoed like an unwanted chorus against the stone floor. Some of them glanced back, others whispered amongst themselves. Obviously, they were not pleased with what had just taken place. But I didn’t care.Let them grumble. Let them choke on old rules. I wasn’t here to keep them comfortable.Araya lingered. She stood by the far column, her shadow stretched long across the floor, wavering near the roots of the throne. Her golden eyes watched me with the same unreadable calm she wore when I first saw her by the window in my chambers.“You are still here,” I said, not unkindly. She stepped forward, her steps almost soundless against the cold floor. “Only wanted to be sure there was nothing else you needed from me.”A convenient excuse. I said nothing and waited. Her eyes dropped for a breath, then lifted again. “You made quite a ruling.”“It had to be made.”She tilted her head slightly

JACQUELINETheo was thirty minutes late.I checked my phone again as I sat in the booth by the window, pretending not to look as annoyed as I felt. The restaurant wasn’t exactly full, but the occasional chime of the door opening always made me lift my head with expectation. And every time it wasn’t him, I went back to my water glass, wondering if I should just leave. He had picked the restaurant. Said it was close to his house. Said he loved their burgers. And still, he was late. Really late.I looked down at the menu again, not even reading it at this point. The waiter had already come by twice. I’d asked for more time both times. Then finally, the door creaked again.Theo walked in, scanning the room with a sheepish look on his face. I recognized him from his pictures, though not immediately. He wasn’t quite as tall as he looked in the profile shots. Not short, just not six-foot-whatever he’d claimed. And his skin looked darker than it had online. Not sun-kissed, more like a fresh l

JACQUELINEDays had passed since Mom told me about the platinum card. Since then, neither of us had brought it up again. Not over breakfast. Not while watching TV. Not even when she was refilling the cat’s bowl with the kibble she ordered online using her own card instead of his.It was almost like we had silently agreed to forget it.But the thing was, the cat was still here. Her soft pawsteps on the wooden floor, the little meows she made when she wanted food or attention, they reminded me that Ezra had been here. That he had come to our doorstep, dropped her off, and handed us a credit card that glimmered like something out of a movie. If not for that cat, I might have convinced myself it was all a dream. That I had never met him. That I had not fallen for him, hard and fast, like an idiot. That I had not kissed him in a drunken haze. Or felt his fingers against my skin like they had belonged there forever. Or watched him disappear without saying goodbye. But forgetting Ezra was ha

EZRAThe weight of the court doors echoed behind me as I stepped into the outer corridor, the cold air tugging at the back of my neck.I was dressed in a black cloak that swept the cold floor of the corridor. After years of wearing shirts, cottons, and suits, I found this oddly discomforting. It was going to take a while to get used to these heavy fabrics again.I turned down the hall that led to the main court, each step slow but deliberate. The scent of torch smoke clung to the ceiling. The walls were carved in dark stone, etched with symbols older than the kingdom itself. As I reached the throne room, I heard footsteps behind me. I turned around just in time to see Tarius slip through the door.He was wearing a cloak almost identical to mine, and he looked very comfortable in it.“Good morning, Alpha. Did you sleep well?”I gave a low nod without taking my eyes off him.“I slept very well, Tarius,” I finally answered.“Alpha,” he said, bowing his head deeply. “Forgive me. There sho
