JACQUELINE

I couldn’t believe I was here. Inside his home. Sitting on his couch. The air in the room was warm but my skin prickled as if someone had just poured cold water down my spine.

Mr Philips had opened the door before I even got the chance to knock. He hadn’t looked surprised.

Had he seen me through the window? Was that how he knew?

His house looked exactly like his office. Bare. Sterile. There was no mess, no warmth. Just clean walls, furniture in muted grays and blacks, a single lamp in the corner casting a soft golden hue over the room. There were no pictures on the wall. No framed certificates. Not a single thing that told a story about who he was.

Not even a book out of place.

The couch was a soft leather, the kind that made no sound under your weight, the kind that didn't invite comfort. The silence stretched between us as he sat down beside me, elbows resting lightly on his knees, gaze locked on mine. His eyes were impossibly dark, like he held secrets deeper than ocea

EZRA“I never pinned you like the type to take in strays, Mr Philips.”“There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Jacqueline.”I didn’t say it out loud, but it burned at the edge of my mouth like a dare. Instead, I shut my eyes and leaned back against the leather, trying to get control of myself. Of everything.I had almost kissed her.The only thing that had stopped me was the damned cat, who had somehow wedged herself between us like some small orange chaperone. Apparently, a stray had more self-awareness than I did. She knew where boundaries should lie. I, on the other hand, was losing mine.I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling, teeth grinding. I had never allowed myself to slip like that. Not in decades. Not since the loss of Gyai. I had built a wall around myself, layered it with steel, frost, and silence. No one got through. No one even tried. And then this girl came along. Loud in spirit. Soft in voice. Braver than she had any right to be. And I let her in. Into my thoughts.

EZRAI had always hated to teach those unruly young adults, but somehow as I sat on my couch I realized I was going to miss lecturing a little. For several weeks, teaching had become my lifestyle and even though it was something I thought I hated, I realized I would miss it.The way they walked into my class with bags under their eyes, the hum of their barely contained gossip, the smell of ink and over-sprayed perfume. And then there was her. The girl who had been brave enough to kiss me and alter my brain cells completely. Now I was leaving. Not just the college. Not just the job. The entire human realm. I was done. If Gyai was not here, in the human realm, there was no point staying. I had to find her. I had to find my mate. If she was in the Grim pack, then that was where I was going to go.I rubbed my thumb down the back of the orange cat curled beside me on the armrest, the only living thing in this world that had the nerve to curl up beside me like I was a heater. The cat purred

JACQUELINE I stayed on my bed long after the message came in, the collage still lighting up my phone screen like a warning. The pictures wouldn’t stop replaying in my mind. Me, frozen in time, looking at Mr Philips like I was in love or close to it. And him, unreadable as always, but close enough that it would make anyone question everything. My stomach was tight, twisted in too many knots. I hadn’t eaten since morning, but I wasn’t hungry. Not when I had less than five hours before Samuel made good on his threat. He wanted to ruin me. And maybe Mr Philips too.Samuel had always had this charming way of hiding his bitterness, of smiling while slicing through skin. It had taken nearly a year of dating and one ugly betrayal to finally see it. And now he had photos that looked more like stills from a romance movie than anything real.I needed to stop him.The light from outside poured through the thin gap in my curtains. It spread across my wall, soft and gold and completely useless. I

JACQUELINEUnfortunately, Blair couldn't join me in my frantic social media search for information about Mr Philips. “I gotta head home early today. Amy gets cranky if I’m late.”I was a little disappointed that I was going to have to do this alone, but I completely understood. Amy couldn't be by herself. “How’s she doing? With the arm and the ribs?”Blair gave a soft smile. “Better. She’s stopped whining about the ribs, which means they’re healing. Still stuck in that cast, though. She decorated it again this morning. Put glitter stickers all over it. I told her it looked like a disco ball.”I laughed. “Sounds like her.”“Yeah. She’s been sleeping more, eating well. The worst seems behind us.”“That’s good,” I said. “Really good.”She glanced sideways at me, her expression soft. “Mom keeps saying she wishes she could thank whoever helped us out with the hospital bills. She’s still trying to figure it out.”My throat tightened.Blair kept talking, her voice quiet, like she wasn’t tryi

JACQUELINEThe corridor was packed with chatter and footsteps as students spilled out of Mrs. Winterthur’s classroom, brushing past each other with loud sighs and rustling bags. I walked with the crowd, half-listening to a girl behind me complain about the number of readings due next week. I barely noticed the people brushing against my shoulders or the way the light filtered through the narrow windows, casting long gold shapes across the floor. My thoughts were stuck somewhere else. At the door, I spotted Blair standing just outside, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed and one foot hooked behind the other. She looked up, eyes scanning the crowd, and then narrowed them the moment she spotted me.“You look like someone ate your favorite candy,” she said, not even bothering with a hello.I slumped against the wall beside her, clutching the strap of my bag tighter than necessary.“He wasn’t there.”Blair blinked. “Who?”“Mr. Philips. He didn’t come to class.”She tilted her h
