**Indicates a Dream**
My body groans in pain as I lay down in my bed. Rebecca has been especially cruel to us this week and my muscles are screaming for some sort of relief. Laying on my cot I try not to think about what tomorrow will bring. Tomorrow is the Labyrinth. Tomorrow my life changes forever for the second time. I wish that I could go into the Labyrinth with hope of finding my mate, but I already know the truth. My mate will not be waiting for me on the other side of the impossible maze.
A warm breeze flutters in my bedroom carrying hints of citrus and pine. Adeline goes wild in my mind begging for me to take her back to the spring to see Victor. “No,” I grumble anxiously. “Tomorrow is too important.” Closing my eyes I let the delicious scent lull me into a deep sleep. **“There are things you need to see,” a voice echoes in my mind. “Things you need to know about the past.” I am pulled backwards through the night. Once again like my body is on a string. Visions of the past flicker past my mind as I move farther into the past. Suddenly I come to a stop and see Alexander and Victor standing before me. “If you think that I am going to let some bastard sit on the throne you are wrong,” Alexander growls at his brother in anger. “I am not asking for the throne,” Victor says impatiently as his toes tap on the ground. “I just want a chance to find my mate.” “No,” Alexander says coldly. “You will not be allowed to find your mate within the labyrinth. In fact,” he adds with a smirk across his face. “You will never find your mate if you are rogue.” “I am your half-brother,” Victor says with a look of shock across his face. “You cannot banish me.” Alexander laughs evilly. “I can and I will,” he says without a blink of his eyes. “I, Alpha King Alexander, hereby banish you, Victor, from the Werewolf Kingdom, declaring you rogue.” Victor drops to his knees in pain as the tether that binds him to the pack snaps, and he becomes a rogue. “Why?” Victor asks as he looks up to Alexander with his eyes full of pain. “You have something I need,” Alexander says cryptically. Victor gets back to his feet and stares at Alexander in disbelief. “What do I have that you could possibly need?”Alexander laughs cruelly. “Your mate. Now you have fifteen minutes to collect your things and leave my territory.”** My eyes flutter open and I realize I am back in my maid's quarters. My body is covered in sweat and the warm air blowing through the window is giving me chills. I lay for a moment trying to comprehend what I just saw. Throwing my legs over the side of the bed I search for Adeline in my mind. She is in the corner of my mind whimpering with her tail tucked between her legs. “Could that have really been the past?” I say to myself aloud as I walk to the window to close it. Adeline is now pacing uncomfortably in my mind as I try to make sense of the dream. As I go to close the window the smell of citrus and pine fills my senses, and it is stronger than ever. Adeline is urging me to go find Victor while my heart is telling me that I need to find Alexander. Alexander loved me once before, surely he will still love me now. Pulling on a robe over my sleeping gown I peek my head outside of my bedroom door. The candles that light the hallway are growing dim as they run out of wax. I slip from my room in silence and make my way to the other side of the castle, being careful not to draw attention to myself. I pass a few guards here and there but none of them pay me any attention. Females were always roaming the castle at night, leaving one room or another. Waiting for one’s mate is a tradition of the past but one that I always said I would keep. As I move silently but quickly through the castle I find myself standing outside of Alexander’s office door. I can see a light burning from under the door. Just as I suspected Alexander is pulling another late night of work. I lay my hand on the doorknob and it turns easily, and I slowly push the door open. Alexander looks up from his work with a confused look on his face. “Who are you?” His question reminds me that he doesn’t know who I am yet. “I… I am…” my voice catches in my throat and I don’t know how to explain to him who I am or who I will be to him. “I am Natalia,” I finally answer after tripping over my words. Looking back down at his paperwork, I think he is going to ignore me when he speaks. “And you are here for what reason?” His voice is cold and uncaring. “I have reason to believe that the pack is in danger. That I am in danger.” The words spew from my mouth like vomit. Alexander sniffs the air and looks at me with an amused look on his face. “You… you are in danger?” He says with a hardy laugh. “You are nothing more than an Omega. Even if your life was in danger why would I care?” His words stab me like a knife through the heart and I have to remind myself that he doesn’t know me yet. He doesn’t know how in love we will be in just a few months. The words to tell him the truth sit on the tip of my tongue, but I cannot urge myself to say them. “I am sorry, Your Highness,” I murmur as I back away from his desk. “I won’t bother you again.” “See to it that you don’t,” he says angrily. Walking backwards I keep my head down and my gaze focused on the floor. Just as I am about to step out of the voice my back hits something hard. I turn around to see Raphael standing in the doorway glaring at me. “I am here to escort you back to your quarters,” he says with a hint of annoyance in his voice. “I can find my way. Thank you, Beta,” I say with my eyes still focused on the ground. “This was not a request,” Raphael says coldly as he grabs me by the arm and leads me from Alexander’s office. When we are far enough away Raphael tightens his grip on my arm and spins me to look at him. “You females have no respect for your King. Throwing yourself at him like a common whore.” “That’s not…” I begin to say but Raphael tightens his grip on my arm even more. He drags me to the servant side of the castle and tosses me through the door. “Remember your place,” he says as he slams the door behind me. My body falls to the floor, and I sob quietly to myself as I sit in the dark hallway. Raphael is just as cold and heartless as he ever was, and Alexander is back to being his old self. It is clear what I have to do. I have to find my way back to Alexander. I have to find my way back to MY Alexander, no matter what the cost. This has to be the way that I change things. I have to let Alexander know that Raphael cannot be trusted. The day is hot. Sweat beads form on my forehead as we stand outside of the castle waiting for Alpha Alexander to come out. I lift my nose to the air and discreetly searching for the scent of my mate, but I know it is too early in the day for me to detect him. I frown at the thought that my mate won’t be waiting for me within the Labyrinth, but I already knew that. I have lived this once before. I should be disappointed, but I am not. I know that Alexander waits for me at the end of the three days. With a loud creek the castle doors open wide and Alexander, my Alexander, walks slowly through the doors and stops just at the edge of the platform. I stare up at his beautiful, chiseled face and butterflies form in my stomach. Even though I know that he will be cruel to me for a few weeks I cannot help but remember how gentle and kind he becomes. Everyone else bows their head in respect as he scans his crystal blue eyes over us. When he reaches me I give him
The sunlight peeks over the tall walls of the Labyrinth and beats down on Adeline’s fur causing her to stir. She stretches her feet out in front of her like a cat would and digs her nails in the dirt floor. Shaking the dirt and dust off her fur from sleeping on the ground. She arches her back and begins to shift, allowing me to come forward once again. Once my bones snap back into place I grab the neatly folded maid’s dress and slip it over my head. As I snap the buttons one by one I lift my nose to the air and sniff. The scent of citrus and pine is nowhere to be found. I cannot help but feel a little disappointed in the fact that I can no longer track down the scent. It is almost like I imagined the scent yesterday. I slip on my black flats, and I look around at my surroundings. The corners and corridors have all changed since I fell asleep last night. I let out a frustrated sigh and my arms flop to my side. Looking around I have no idea which way to go. So I just pick
Adeline refuses to let me rest. The higher the moon grows in the sky the more desperate she becomes to find her mate. She forced the shift hours ago and refuses to give me back the reins. With her nose to the ground she hunts for the scent that she craves. The scent of citrus and pine. She is positive that the scent belongs to her mate. I have long stopped trying to reason with her. We aren’t here to find our mate. We are here to find our way back to Alexander, but she is a wolf obsessed with finding her goal. Never stopping to rest, Adeline keeps hunting our mate until the wee hours of the morning. The sky turns a beautiful shade of orange and purple as the sun rises in the sky. I watch the breathtaking sunrise from behind Adeline’s eyes and I beg her to stop and take a break for a few hours. Letting out a little humph of frustration she finally tires herself out and lays on the hard ground and closes her eyes. Once Adeline’s mind is calm once again I let myself rest
The water in the bath is so hot that it stings my skin, but I do not dare complain. The woman that is scrubbing my body has a very serious look on her face and I remember that she is not the type to be crossed. The embarrassment of having someone else wash you never gets any better. Treating me like a child she lifts my arms and scrubs my armpits. “I can honestly do this myself,” I say embarrassed as she runs the rag over my breasts. “The Alpha King wants you clean,” she mumbles angrily to herself as the rag travels further south. Looking up at her I cannot help but wonder why she is so angry with me. She appears to be around my age with beautiful golden hair that is pulled back into a tight bun. Her clothes are neatly pressed and nothing about her is out of place. Grabbing her wrist with both of my hands I stop her before she reaches my southern regions. “Please,” I say with a little harshness in my voice. “Let me do this myself.” The woman drops the rag in the bath
Margaret shows me to my room and slams the door shut. I hear the jiggle of keys and a click, and I know that she has locked me inside. I let out a sorrowful sigh. The room that has been provided for me is only a small improvement over the small room that I stayed in as an Omega. There is a bed, an actual bed, not a cot with an overly worn mattress. A small dresser is off to one side and another door that I can only assume leads to a bathroom. Making my way across the room I open the small dresser and neatly folded maid’s uniform dresses are stacked inside. Plain white undergarments are in the top drawer. I run my fingers over the rough material and long for the silks and satins that I used to wear. Closing the drawers to the dresser I open up the door leading to the bathroom. There is only a sink and a toilet. No shower. Of course there wouldn’t be one, I think to myself. Only those of important rank and stature would have a full bathroom attached to their rooms. Stri
Slipping out of my bedroom I quietly tiptoe down the halls of the castle. Using the service stairwells only; I quickly make my way out of the castle’s backdoor. I let my heart guide me as I find my way to the spot where I saw the large black wolf standing, but he is no longer there. My heart drops a little as I look down at the massive pawprints he left in the dirt. They disappear just inside of the tree line. Just inside the forest I walk along the trees looking for hints that my mate is still out here. Rustling the leaves on the ground I look for any pawprints that may have been left behind. But there is nothing for me to find. With a frustrated humph, I kick the leaves in front of me and the scent of citrus and pine sprinkles into the air. The scent is faint but it is enough for my nose to follow. Pulling off my robe, I allow Adeline to come forward. As my skin stretches and my body elongates my beautiful white fur sprouts along my skin. Adeline stretches her paws in
“Get up, Girl,” Margaret says loudly as she rips the blankets off my bed. When the bells rang for the servants to awaken, I had rolled over and went back to sleep. My night had been plagued with nightmares of my past life. Visions of being attacked replayed over and over in my dreams. Only this time it was not Raphael that delivered the haunting message, it was Victor himself and his giant black wolf was the first one to deliver the blow to my naked body. I groan loudly at Margaret and pull my pillow over my head trying to drown out her nasally voice. “I said get up, Girl,” she yells out loudly again. Sitting up in the bed I stretch my arms widely to the side and glare in Margaret’s direction. “I have a name you know,” I say with as much smartass attitude as I can muster. Margaret looks down on me with a strange satisfaction. “What is the point in getting to know your name when you won’t be around for long?”“What is that supposed to mean?” I cannot help the jealousy tha
Standing outside of Alexander’s room the next morning I can feel Margaret seething with anger beside me. She was not happy about having to share her room with me. She made sure to give me only one drawer in the dresser for all of my clothes and gave me boxes for under my bed for what I could not fit in the drawer. Needless to say she is trying to make my life as uncomfortable as possible, but I refuse to let her get me down. She is my one obstacle to get closer to Alexander and to get back to my old life. But as much as I want to get back to Alexander my mind is constantly drifting back to Victor. Just two nights ago his hands were on my bare skin and it felt as though a fire was ignited within me. With just those few stolen moments something has awoken within me and I need to know more about this man that is my mate. “Natalia…” A voice breaks through my daydream about Victor. “Earth to Natalia. Are you even paying attention?” I snap back to reality and see Alexander sta
