Three days later the same corridor smelled different.

I had gone looking for him after the evening meal. The council meeting had run long. Jörgen usually found a way to slip out early when he knew I was waiting. Tonight the storage room door stood half open and the light inside was wrong. Too steady. Someone had left the small lamp burning.

I slowed. My hand was already on the frame when I heard it.

A soft, wet sound. Then a woman's breath catching the way mine did when he got the angle right.

I stopped breathing.

The door was open just enough. I saw the wall first. The same stretch of rough stone where he had pinned me three nights ago.

Yvonne's bare back was against it. Her skirt was bunched at her waist. Jörgen had one hand under her thigh, holding her open, the other braced beside her head. He was inside her. Deep. Moving with the same controlled rhythm he used with me.

Her eyes were closed. Her mouth was open. She made a small sound against his shoulder and he answered it with a low growl that I felt in my own stomach.

I didn't move.

The lamp light caught the side of his face. He looked exactly the way he had looked at me. Focused. Hungry. Like nothing else existed.

My fingers tightened on the doorframe until the wood bit into my skin. I should have made a sound. I should have shoved the door wide and forced them to look at me. Instead I stood there and watched him finish what he had started with someone else.

Yvonne's head tipped back. Her fingers dug into his shoulders. He thrust harder and she came with a broken little cry that she tried to muffle against his neck. He followed a few seconds later, hips stuttering, forehead pressed to hers. The same way he had pressed his forehead to mine.

I took one step back.

The floorboard under my heel gave a soft creek.

That was when both of their heads turned.

Jörgen's eyes found me first. For a split second pure shock wiped everything else off his face. Then something colder settled in. Calculation. He didn't pull out of her right away. He just looked at me over her shoulder like he was already deciding what to say.

Yvonne's gaze locked on mine a heartbeat later. Color drained from her face. She shoved at his chest. He stepped back and turned, still half hard, still wet from her. He didn't bother covering himself.

"Maria."

My name sounded wrong in his mouth.

I didn't answer. My throat had closed so tight I could barely swallow. The smell of sex and dust filled the small room the same way it had three nights ago. Only the woman was different.

Yvonne yanked her skirt down with shaking hands. "It isn't what it looks like."

I almost laughed. The sound stayed trapped behind my teeth.

Jörgen took a step toward me. I took one back. He stopped.

"Listen to me," he said. His voice had dropped into the low, careful tone he used when he was about to talk someone into something. "We can explain."

"Don't."

The single word came out flat. I hated how thin it sounded.

Yvonne's eyes flicked between us. She looked like she might be sick. "Maria, please. It only happened once. It didn't mean anything."

Jörgen shot her a look that shut her up. Then he focused on me again. "You're upset. I understand. But you have to think. If this gets out, both our families lose the alliance with the Stormvik traders. My father will cut me off. Yours already barely tolerates you. We can fix this. Just give me a chance to talk to you properly."

I stared at him. The same mouth that had told me I was his three nights ago was now talking about alliances and fathers like I was a political problem that needed managing.

Something cold and heavy settled under my ribs.

I turned and walked away.

I didn't run. Running would have made noise. I just put one foot in front of the other down the corridor, past the empty rooms, past the turn that led to the main hall. Behind me I heard Jörgen curse and the sound of him grabbing for his pants. Yvonne called my name once, sharp and frightened.

I kept walking.

My room was on the far side of the pack house, up a narrow stair that no one used after dark. I climbed it without feeling the steps. Inside I locked the door, leaned my back against it, and slid down until I was sitting on the floor with my arms around my knees.

The place between my legs still ached faintly from three nights ago. I could still remember the exact weight of his hand over my mouth. The way he had said "you're mine" like it was fact.

I pressed my forehead to my knees and waited for the shaking to stop.

It didn't.

Somewhere below me, in the main part of the house, doors opened and closed. Voices carried faintly through the stone. I stayed on the floor and listened to the ordinary sounds of the pack settling for the night while the only future I had built for myself finished collapsing in a storage room two corridors away.

After a long time I stood up, wiped my face with the heel of my hand, and started packing the few things that belonged to me.

I would leave before dawn. Quietly. No confrontation. No scene. Just gone.

I had no idea they were already deciding I could not be allowed to leave at all.

The consequence arrived before midday, and it did not come gently. I had been standing at the window with the narrow strip of open air on my face when the lock turned hard. Not the careful sound of medical staff or the single guard with a tray. Multiple boots. The door opened and two guards entered first, then a man in the dark insignia of the investigative office. Behind him came the formal-dressed official from the original interrogation. Their faces carried none of the flat routine I had gotten used to. "Maria Jonsson," the investigator said. "You will come with us." "Where?" "A review of specific claims you made regarding the sedative evidence. The request was logged. It is being addressed." My stomach tightened. I had pushed the timeline problem at Oliver the night before. Someone had decided it could not be left alone. Whether that was protection or a setup to shut me down permanently, I could not yet tell. They did not restrain me. The contract made open force unnecessar

She tried to keep her voice steady. "The halted execution and the contract were formally acknowledged. Several members expressed concern that the King is elevating a convicted murderer above the memory of his consort. One suggested that any child produced under these conditions would carry the taint of the crime. Another suggested the contract should be supervised by a fuller medical and legal panel to ensure the Crown is not being manipulated.""And you came to tell me this out of kindness.""I came to tell you that your position is not as secure as the locked door might make it feel. Practical arrangements can be revised. Public pressure has weight even on a King." She tilted her head. "You should also know that your former pack has been very cooperative in supplying character statements. They paint a consistent picture. Unstable. Resentful. Isolated. It will be difficult for anyone to argue that the judgment was rushed."She left before I could answer. The perfume trailed after her

"They are using statements from Lindholm. Character assessments. The same story Jörgen and Yvonne built." Oliver's eyes narrowed a fraction. "Your former pack's statements were part of the original record. They remain part of the record. Unless you have new evidence that changes the facts of the consort's death, they are irrelevant to the terms under which you are still breathing." I held his gaze. "There is a problem with the sedative timeline. The same compound was in my system and in the chamber. No one has properly separated when it entered my blood from when the consort died. If I was already unconscious when I was moved, the official version that I used it to overpower her does not hold." Silence settled. Oliver studied me for a long moment. The calculation behind his eyes was open enough that I could see him turning the detail over. "You are not an investigator," he said. "You are the contracted party in a breeding agreement. The question of the consort's death is being ha

I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the observation fittings in the corners. Somewhere the numbers from my body were being added to a file that decided whether I remained useful. A tray arrived. I ate. The guard took it away. The quiet returned. I used the quiet. The contract kept me alive, but it did not require me to stop thinking. I went back over every piece of the official story I had heard in the judgment chamber and in the interrogation room. The sedative in my blood and in the consort's chamber. My scent throughout the room. The statements from Jörgen and Yvonne placing themselves in the main hall with witnesses. The claim that I had been unstable and resentful. One detail sat wrong. The sedative. The physician who had examined me in the cell had mentioned residue in a cup on the side table in the consort's chamber. The same sedative that had been forced into me in my own room. If Jörgen and Yvonne had drugged me there, and if they had then moved me while I was unc

I stayed on my back and stared at the ceiling while the evidence of what had just happened leaked onto my thighs. Oliver sat on the edge of the bed with his back to me and reached for his clothing. He dressed with the same efficiency as before. When he stood he looked down at me once. "The physician will check you in the morning," he said. "You will report any unusual pain or bleeding. Meals and schedule continue as established. Do not leave the wing." He walked to the door. I pushed myself up on my elbows. My voice came out scraped. "Is that the full extent of the first attempt? No words. No acknowledgment. Just the act and the exit?" He paused with his hand on the door. "The contract requires a viable attempt," he said. "It does not require conversation. You are alive. That is the acknowledgment." He left. The lock turned. I sat in the half-dark with his seed still inside me and the marks of his hands forming on my hip and wrist. The observation fittings watched from t

The afternoon tests were worse than the morning ones. They took more blood. Measured things I did not understand. The older medical woman pressed fingers along the inside of my wrists and the sides of my neck, checking responses I could not feel. The younger one recorded everything in the same flat tone, as if I were a set of numbers that had not yet decided whether they would be useful. When they finished they left without explanation. The lock turned. The observation fittings in the corners stayed dark and watchful.I washed the puncture marks in the bathing room and stared at my face in the small mirror. I looked like someone who had already been worn down and then told to keep standing. The cut on my palm had closed enough to itch. I left it alone.Evening came slowly. The light through the high window thinned. A tray arrived. I ate what I could. The guard took it away. The corridor outside went quieter as the palace shifted into its night rhythm.I sat on the edge of the bed an
