Chapter 12

RAMON

I stood in the main foyer of my mansion, checking my watch for the third time in five minutes as I was getting a bit impatient.

It was nearly three in the afternoon, and I'd been waiting for almost an hour for Lake and Ollie to come downstairs so that I could see them. After my disturbing discovery at the warehouse and the conversation I'd overheard outside my bedroom suite, I'd made an important decision to postpone tonight's bonding ceremony where I would officially claim Lake as my mate.

There were too many unknowns that I hadn't considered properly yet, there were too many pieces of Lake's story that didn't fit together properly. And if my suspicions about Samuel Sanders were correct, then rushing into a mating bond would be the worst possible thing I could do right now.

Instead, I'd decided on something more normal for them but equally important—shopping. If Lake and Ollie were going to be living here permanently, they needed proper clothes, supplies, and everyt

Chapter 102LAKE"He's a sweet boy," Michelle said. "And he clearly adores you. The whole time we were in the bath, he kept telling me about things you do together, ways you take care of him. You're his whole world, Lake.""That's what scares me," I admitted. "What happens if I'm not enough? What happens when he realizes there's a whole world out there beyond just me?""Then he explores it," Michelle said simply. "With you as his safe base to return to. That's how it's supposed to work, Lake. Kids are supposed to venture out into the world, but they need to know they have a safe place to come back to. You've given him that safe place. Now you get to watch him discover everything else."I nodded, not trusting my voice. Everyone kept saying similar things—Elena, Ramon, Michelle—and maybe if enough people said it, I'd eventually start to believe it."Mama, are you okay?" Ollie was suddenly in front of me, looking up with concerned eyes. "You look sad.""I'm not sad, baby," I assured him

Chapter 101LAKEMy throat felt tight. "He was having a panic attack yesterday. He couldn't breathe. He was screaming that he didn't want this family if he couldn't have me back. That's not thriving, Elena.""That's trauma response," she said firmly. "That's his brain protecting him from perceived abandonment based on past experiences. But Lake, this morning? The way he was able to self-soothe enough to let us help him? The way he sought comfort from other people instead of completely shutting down? The way he's over there right now, playing and laughing and being a normal five-year-old? That's because you've given him a foundation of love and security strong enough that he can start to branch out.""I don't know if I believe that," I whispered."Then believe me," Elena said. "Lake, I've raised four boys. I've seen every kind of child, every kind of trauma response, every kind of parenting. And what you're doing with Ollie—it's remarkable. You're letting him be a child while also hon

Chapter 100LAKEI couldn't stop watching him.Ollie was across the room, sitting at the painting table with Sophia and David and Julian, all of them chattering excitedly about their collaborative masterpiece. His small hands were covered in paint—blue and green and yellow—and there was a smudge of red on his cheek that he'd gotten somehow. Mr. Hoppy sat propped against a cup of paintbrushes, dutifully supervising as always. And Ollie was laughing. Actually laughing, his face lit up with genuine joy as David said something that made all the kids crack up.I'd woken up this morning in a complete panic. The bed had been empty beside me except for Ramon, and my first thought—my immediate, visceral thought—had been that Ollie was gone. That yesterday's terror had somehow manifested into reality, that he'd disappeared or been taken or decided he didn't want to be with me anymore.I'd torn through the house in Ramon's shirt, not even thinking about getting dressed, my heart hammering so har

Chapter 99OLLIE"Really?" I asked, my eyes going wide. "You'd do that?""Of course," Papa said. "These are important. Your first paintings in your new home with your new family. They should be displayed properly."My new home. My new family. Those words still felt big and strange, but also kind of nice. Like maybe they could be real, not just pretend."Can we eat now?" I asked, because my tummy was rumbling again even though I'd had pancakes for breakfast. "I'm hungry again."Mama laughed, and it was a real laugh this time, not a scared one or a sad one. "Of course we can eat. Growing boys are always hungry."Grandma Elena had already started making plates for Mama and Papa—pancakes and eggs and bacon and fruit. She put them on the kitchen island, and Papa lifted me up onto one of the tall chairs while Mama sat beside me.We ate together, the three of us, while the family moved around us doing family things. The other kids kept painting, and the grown-ups talked about boring stuff l

Chapter 98OLLIEHypervigilant. That was a big word. I didn't know what it meant, but it sounded like something doctors said."Come on," Grandma Elena said gently. "Let me make you some coffee and breakfast. You must be starving.""I should get dressed first," Mama said, looking down at Ramon's shirt. "I just ran down here in—""Nobody cares," Aunt Sarah interrupted, smiling. "Lake, we're family. You could come down in your underwear and we wouldn't bat an eye.""Please don't," Uncle Rafael said, making a face. "I don't need that visual with my morning coffee.""Rafael!" Aunt Michelle smacked his arm, but she was laughing.Mama laughed too, just a little bit, and I felt something relax in my chest. When Mama laughed, even small laughs, it meant things were okay. It meant the scary stuff was getting smaller."Can I finish my T-Rex first?" I asked, looking at my painting. "Before we eat? I'm almost done with the spikes."Mama looked at me like I'd said something amazing. "You want to fi

Chapter 97OLLIEI was adding spikes to my T-Rex's back—really big spikes that would make him super scary—when I heard it. Fast footsteps on the stairs, like someone was running, and then Mama's voice calling out."Ollie? OLLIE?"My heart jumped in my chest, and my paintbrush stopped in the middle of a spike. Mama sounded scared. Really scared. The kind of scared that made my tummy hurt and my throat feel tight.I looked up just as Mama came rushing into the room. His hair was all messy, sticking up in different directions like he'd just woken up. He was wearing one of Ramon's big shirts that went down almost to his knees, and his eyes were wild and panicky as they scanned the room."Mama!" I called out, putting my paintbrush down. His eyes found me, and his whole face changed. The scared look got replaced with something else—relief, I think, but also maybe he was going to cry. He rushed over to where I was sitting at the table, practically running, and then he was on his knees beside
