Chapter 1 LAKEThe stench of rotting vegetables and spoilt food was what filled my nostrils as I slowly woke up after being unconscious. My cheek was pressed against the cold floor that was located in the restaurant's storage room, and every part of my body seemed too stiff and ached in protest as I tried to move.I could still taste the blood that was on my tongue, from the new cut that I had gotten and I could feel my left eye swollen nearly shut. How long had I been unconscious? The memories came back in painful waves as I winced holding my head.It had been the usual shitty day for me until it got to closing time. When three alphas who were regulars and had been drinking too much and thought they could ask the dishwasher for sex. When I'd politely declined their offer—if you could call grabbing my ass and suggesting I "earn some real money on my back" an offer—they'd gotten angry. Very angry at me and changed in an instant."Think you're too good for us, freak?" The leader had s

Chapter 3I stripped us till we were both in our underwear, as the cold air was causing goosebumps on our skins. Ollie was shivering but trying to be brave, trusting me to keep him safe. The irony wasn't lost on me."Hold my hand," I said, leading him toward the waves as I added. "We'll go in together."The water was cold as we waded deeper into it. Ollie gasped and clung to me, his small body shaking from the temperature."It's too cold, Lake," he said, his teeth chattering as he looked at me. "I want to go back.""Just a little deeper," I said, my voice filled with unshed tears as I added. "I promise you it'll be okay."But as we moved further into the water, something inside me began to crack, as I was beginning to have doubts about this. Killing myself was okay. But could I kill the only light I know? The way Ollie trusted me completely, the way he'd waited for me at school without question, the way he'd said he knew I'd come for him—it was breaking my heart in ways I hadn't expe

Chapter 5RamonI found them there, as they were seated on the kitchen table rather than the dining room. Ollie was eating hurriedly what happened to be his second grilled cheese sandwich, while Lake merely picked at a bowl of soup, sitting tensed and alert. Both had been given new clothes to wear which was evident—Ollie was dressed in what looked like pajamas from our guest supplies, Lake in what must have been borrowed from one of my smaller staff members, even those hung loosely on his body. His face, now clean of dirt and seawater, showed the full extent of the beating that he had received, -a black eye, split lip, and what looked like finger marks on his jaw from where someone had held him too hard. The sight alone sent a new wave of anger through me. Those alphas would pay for this. They would suffer more than Lake had, when I am done with them. That they would be wishing for death."I hope the food is to your liking," I said, announcing my presence to them.Ollie turned toward

Chapter 7LAKEOllie hearing my voice seemed to have understood what I meant as he settled deeper into the pillow, his breathing evening out again. He looked so small like this and exhausted. As he slept I could remember the fear that was present in his eyes when we entered too deep in the water and he realized that I had no plan of turning back.I shot my eyes immediately banishing the thought from my mind. I wasn't going to ever try that again and I was going to make sure that Ollie forgave me for what I had tried to do, even though he didn't understand the full consequences of my actions.I should go back to my own room, get some rest, after the hectic day that I had been through and try to figure out what the hell I was going to do. This Alpha seemed like someone that was going to be dangerous and I needed to build my walls quickly to protect Ollie from getting hurt in the process. But I couldn't bring myself to let go of his hand, couldn't bear to leave him alone in this strange

Chapter 9RAMON"Certainly, Alpha Ramon. What are the details?""Oliver Sanders, age five. Currently under the guardianship of his brother Lake Sanders, age nineteen. I want legal custody transferred to me as quickly as possible."There was a brief pause, as she seemed to be taken aback by my unusual request. After all this was the first time that I was adopting someone. Anyone I adopted meant that they had a legal claim to my properties and would be treated with respect as they would be added to the family tree."Sir, if I may ask, what's the rush? Adoption proceedings usually take months, especially when there's an existing guardian who might contest—""The existing guardian won't contest," I interrupted her gently as I needed her to give me what I wanted without asking unnecessary questions. "And I don't want months. I want days.""I'll see what I can do, but there are legal requirements—""Jennifer," I said, letting a hint of alpha command enter my voice. "You've handled my legal
