KAEL

The door closed behind me, and the room fell quiet.

Light from the tall windows cut across the floor, stopping just short of the desk that now stood broken and scarred. Dust from cracked wood still floated in the air. The smell of splintered oak mixed with the faint scent of metal and oil from the weapons that were usually kept here.

A hand slid into a pocket.

Fingers closed around the thin black hair tie taken earlier from the bedroom floor.

It was small. Light. Almost nothing.

Still, it

EPILOGUESix years laterLIORARock. Paper. Scissors.“Shoot. I lost again!” Nyra jumped back and frowned at her father. “Again.”If someone had told me my five-year-old would be playing rock paper scissors with the Night Alpha, I would have laughed and walked away. Yet that was exactly what was happening in front of me.When I learned I was having a daughter, I imagined a quiet child. Someone gentle. Someone who might enjoy the same calm things I did. That idea did not survive reality. There was nothing especially calm about me to pass on anyway, and Nyra turned out to be a smaller version of Kael in every way that mattered. If not for our shared red curls, doubts might have crossed my mind.“Again,” she yelled, loud and confident, which earned them a sharp look from me.A good romance book rested in my hands. The heroine was falling in love with a baker. A sensible choice. Falling for a dangerous man and raising more of his kind was not a plan I had thought through very well. Otherw

KAEL Earlier, when I spoke to her, my body had moved on instinct and worry. This was nothing like that. Nothing about this was automatic. My mouth found hers again, slow at first, then urgent. The need behind it was raw and overwhelming, pushing everything else out of my head. Her lips parted under mine. Breath hitched between us. Fingers brushed over her breasts, light but sure, and her sharp gasp spilled straight into my mouth. Kisses followed her jaw, then her throat. Teeth caught gently at her earlobe, just enough to make her shiver. My hand drifted lower, tracing her stomach inch by inch. No rush. She was already wet when my fingers reached her, heat waiting for me. A thumb circled her clit, slow and careful, while my mouth stayed busy at her neck.“Kael…” The sound of my name came out broken, pulled from deep inside her.Her nipple filled my mouth, warm and hard, while my finger slid into her slick heat. The way she welcomed me made my body tighten hard with need. She was soake

KAEL “Vireya was attractive. We slept together a few times, but it never meant more than that. Long before she vanished from my life, I stopped seeing her that way.”“You slept with her while you were still sleeping with me.”Silence filled the space between us.“When did that happen?”“You don’t have to pretend if—”“No, Liora.” The arm around her moved away as I sat up and turned to face her. “Vireya and I never had sex after I met you. Not once.”Tears gathered in her eyes when I said it. “The night you told me you felt nothing for me, you came back smelling like her. Your shirt was torn. There were nail marks on your skin.”My mind searched for that night. When the memory clicked into place, shock hit hard. Everything made sense in a way I hated.Anyone would have believed the same thing. Letting Vireya get close enough to do that had been a mistake. One I would carry.“We didn’t have sex that day,” I said quietly. “She came to me, and I shut it down. Not just because of you. I t

LIORAA laugh slipped out of me before I could stop it, and I realized that telling her this wasn't as hard as I had expected. The memories were heavy, but her presence made them lighter, somehow."I won't go into every detail, but by the time I was a teenager, I'd had enough. Around twelve or thirteen, I ran away from my pack and started wandering alone. I ended up meeting Mordane about a year later. He was the first vampire I ever met.""He's my first too," Liora said with a small smirk."It's not a competition," I said, shaking my head."I'm just pointing out how much we have in common," she replied.I smiled, letting her words linger. "Anyway, back to my sad childhood story that you keep interrupting," I said, though her interruptions didn't bother me at all. Her teasing made the memories easier to handle."Okay, so what happened?" she asked, tilting her head."I was fourteen when I met Mordane. He was with this human girl, Lyra. He claimed she was his mate and said he would wait

KAELHer hands felt cold in mine. She had been out for hours. The doctor kept telling me she was fine, that everything was stable, but worry sat heavy in my chest and would not ease.“It’s fine. She’s just exhausted,” the doctor said again. “But I assure you, she and the baby are fine.”That was how I found out my mate was pregnant.I had not sensed the life inside her when I held her on the porch. That realization hit me hard, sharp enough that my heart felt like it might tear itself apart. She was alive. That had been the first thought. The only one that mattered.I had put her in danger by trusting the wrong people. Then I had been forced to trust someone else with her life. When I told Kane to pull her from Mordane’s grip because he was the fastest, there was no certainty he would do it.But he had.I paid the vampire for that choice and let him leave. Every past sin I had held against him no longer mattered after that. Now, twelve hours later, we were back at the penthouse. Liora

LIORA“You really think I didn’t know it was you who killed the old alpha and pinned it on me?” The words left my mouth steady, even though my chest burned. “If you’re wondering, yes. Darius knows you murdered his father just to turn us against each other. He didn’t take it well.”“That little bastard,” Mordane yelled. “Kane told you, didn’t he?”Before Kael could answer, Mordane snapped his head toward Ronan. Rage twisted his face. “You didn’t tell me the vampire was still alive.”“I thought Kael had killed him,” Ronan said quickly. From the way Kael watched him, it was clear the doubt had been there for a long time. He had let Ronan believe the lie on purpose.“Who cares?” Vireya cut in. She shoved Mordane aside and stepped forward. “Kael is here now, and you’re all wasting time talking. Let’s get this over with.”Kael laughed when she moved closer. It was calm. Almost amused. “Don’t rush it, Vireya. Don’t you want to wait for our friends to arrive?”Silence fell.“What friends?” Vi
