ARIA

Her story sounded unreal, but I knew my father too well. Victor was praised by the Ironwill Basin Pack as an alpha who could do no wrong.

They saw the golden wolf with the easy smile. The strong leader. The man everyone trusted. Most of them never saw what lived underneath that image. I did. I knew about the hunger he carried.

I knew how badly he wanted control of Ironwill Basin. That was why my marriage to Alaric had been arranged in the first place.

I had believed the bond would be political. A marriage to tie power together. I never thought it would be sealed with blood instead of vows. But the more I thought about it, the more it fit. Killing to gain power was exactly something my father would do.

“Rook found me,” I said quietly. “You already got what you wanted, Lyra. Why did you come back?”

“Alaric is a beast,” she said in a whisper. Her voice cracked under the weight of it. “I came back to see my father, and to get supplies. I needed to run. I can’t marry him. One day he’ll kill me. I know it in my bones.”

After everything I had endured, after all the fear sitting in my chest, I still felt something soften toward her. She had tried to protect someone. She had not known what Alaric truly was.

She had not understood the cost. And after what I had witnessed in the Grand Moon Hall, I believed her. His cruelty was not hidden. It was waiting for permission.

“He won’t stop,” I told her. “Even if he decides he doesn’t want you, he’ll still hunt you down. Men like him don’t accept rejection. Not when power is involved.”

“I know.” Her tears finally broke free and slid down her face. “But I have to try. And I had to say I was sorry before I left. I don’t deserve forgiveness.”

That was when the thought came to me. Sharp and dangerous. The kind that could get me killed if I was wrong.

“Lyra,” I said slowly, “listen to me. You’re not the only one who needs to disappear. I’m locked in this room, but I have to escape. Tonight. If we work together, we might both survive.”

If I was still there when my father returned, he would scent the change on me. He would know. And he would not hesitate.

I waited. I barely breathed. I expected fear, or doubt, or questions. It could have been a trap. Victor loved giving me hope just to tear it away when I reached for it. He had done it more times than I could count.

But Lyra lifted her chin and straightened her spine.

“I’m in,” she said.

It was nearly three in the morning when the door finally opened again. Six long hours had crawled by since I last saw her. The guard lay slumped on the floor, out cold, the sleeping draught doing its work just like we planned. Lyra held the key tightly, her fingers shaking.

“Rook and Torin went west on a run,” she whispered. “We’ll go east, toward the river, then split up. Are you sure you won’t come with me? My father has a safe place.”

“Did you tell him about me?” I asked, sharper than I meant to.

She shook her head right away. “No. But you can trust him.”

“I do,” I said. “That’s why he needs to know nothing. If they come asking, he needs to be able to say it was the truth.”

I squeezed her hand. “You can’t come with me. I already have a plan. I’ll call your new phone in a few days. When I’m safe, I’ll come back for you. We’ll build something new.”

I couldn’t tell her everything. Not yet. Trust had to be earned, and survival came first.

My bag was ready. We shifted, which cost me more time than I could afford. Pain rippled through me as my body fought the change. Then we slipped out of Victor Blackwood’s keep. No one stopped us. No one even thought to look.

When the wolves began howling far to the west, we ran east instead. Toward the river.

The escape was almost too easy. No one believed I could make it this far. We crossed into the water and finally parted, each of us glancing back one last time. Maybe one day, when the danger was gone, Lyra and I could be family.

When I reached the hotel where I had last seen Kael, dawn was creeping into the sky. I didn’t expect him to still be there. I only needed information about the Goldenreach clan, and the hotel was neutral ground. Once I had a map, I planned to leave immediately.

Then I saw him.

Kael stood in the parking lot.

My heart skipped. The ball had been weeks ago. He wasn’t from this area. Had he stayed? Was he waiting for me?

Hope spread through my chest before I could stop it. All I had to do was shift. Just once. Show him who I was.

Seven Jeeps were lined up nearby. He spoke to someone briefly, then climbed into the passenger seat of one in the middle.

They were leaving.

I hesitated only a second. Then I moved. I circled the vehicles and sniffed. One of them carried his scent strongly. It was packed with his things. He wasn’t coming back.

I made a choice. I slipped into the trunk and curled up tight. Moments later, it slammed shut.

The engine started. The convoy pulled away.

Hours passed. Exhaustion finally dragged me under. I hadn’t slept in days. I should have planned for that. Dreams filled the dark. When Kael found me, I would explain everything. He would understand. We would figure it out together. I would be safe. Far from my father.

Goldenreach. Aria of Goldenreach.

I liked the sound of that.

Rough hands yanked me awake. Fingers closed around the scruff of my wolf and hauled me out. My body hit the pavement hard. I rolled onto my back at once, showing my belly. A whimper slipped out of me, from pain, and from instinct.

I submitted.

KAEL The radio on his belt crackled again, loud in the quiet. Thane reached down and lifted it, listening with a practiced ease. It was the same kind of radio. Same size. Same static burst. Just like the ones worn by the wolves who had attacked us when we first entered the High Wilds. The thought made my chest tighten. My instincts didn’t like the link. I forced myself to breathe through it. We were far from that place now. At least a week of hard travel. Technology spread fast. If one group had radios, others would too. There was no reason to spiral. “Your people are only a few minutes behind us,” Thane said. He slowed slightly so I could keep pace. His tone stayed even. “One is unconscious, but the others look stable. We have empty quarters where you can rest for now. Still, she should go straight to a healer.” The question slipped out before I could stop it. “Where do you get electricity to charge the radios?” “Solar panels and generators,” he replied without hesitation. “Sa

KAEL Desperation tightened in my chest as my eyes locked on Liora. She was the only one still standing with me. The rest were down. Broken. Bleeding. If I chased after Aria, I would be leaving her alone with three injured wolves who could barely move. That choice felt wrong in every way.Leaving wasn't something I could accept. But neither was letting that creature take Aria."I'll get them awake," Liora said, already moving. Her voice was firm, not shaken. "Go. We'll follow your tracks."I hesitated. Every instinct pulled in opposite directions."Damn it, Kael, go," she snapped, meeting my eyes. "If he wanted her dead, she'd already be dead. He wants something else. You know that. Don't let him have it. Bring her back. I can protect them here."That was it. There was no more time to argue with myself.I let the wolf take over. The world narrowed as I turned and ran. Muscles burned. The ground vanished beneath my paws. The creature was far larger than it should have been, wrong in a

ARIA A deep crashing sound tore through the Blackwood Wilds. It wasn’t just noise. It felt heavy, violent, wrong. Trees were being ripped out and thrown aside like they weighed nothing. Each crash came closer than the last. My mouth went dry.“This is taking too long,” I said, forcing the words out. “If I get caught halfway through a shift…”I stopped. The rest didn’t need saying. Half-shift meant helpless. Helpless meant dead.Behind me, Liora had already changed. Her wolf form stood low and tense, a growl rolling out of her throat. The sound wasn’t loud, but it carried warning. I stepped closer to the fire, heat brushing my legs, and stared ahead as the trees began to bend and split.Something moved fast.A wolf shot out of the darkness and slammed straight into the flames.“Fen,” I swore.I ran forward, grabbed his front legs, and hauled him out of the fire. Flames clung to his fur, bright and hungry. I smacked at them with my hands until he groaned.“He’s alive,” I said quickly t

ARIA We traveled for ten long hours up the mountain and never crossed paths with a single wolf. Not a scent. Not a sound. The quiet pressed in the whole way. The moment we finally stopped, the shift rolled off me and left me standing in my human skin again, cold settling fast into my bones. I shivered hard. My wolf had enjoyed the freedom too much. Every time she stayed out that long, pulling her back felt slower and rougher, like she resisted just to remind me she could.Liora shifted beside me and we dressed without speaking. The silence felt heavy but familiar. She dug through the pack and pulled out the small jar of cream, then nodded toward my knee. “It’s aching again, isn’t it? You should have let him break it. It would’ve healed the right way.”A fallen log sat nearby, half-rotted and worn smooth. I eased myself down and took the jar while she crouched to start a fire. “That’s easy to say for someone who’s never lived under a man’s hand.” The cream warmed as soon as it touche

KAELWe returned to the village with two deer and several rabbits. Word spread fast. People came out from between the buildings and gathered along the path. They formed a loose line, quiet but watchful, and accepted what we brought with careful hands. There was relief in their faces. Hunger recognized food.Eldric stepped forward and clasped my arm, then my hand. His grip was firm, steady."This is more than wonderful," he said. "We thank you for the bounty."Nyssa moved to my side, her smile warm and open, like this place held no danger at all. Aria Blackwood did not join us. She stayed close to Serah, her posture guarded. I felt her eyes on me. Hard. Unmoving. The hunt had never been just about food. It gave me reason to move freely along the Outer Watch. To circle the edges of the village. To see what lay beyond the Iron Boundary. To sense what waited out there. We hadn't crossed paths with a single wolf. That bothered me. Wolves did not simply disappear from their own land. Not wi

ARIAThe shadows around the giant oak shifted, and a moment later, Serah and a young woman stepped from behind its broad trunk. They had been looking up at the branches. Spotting us, Serah smiled warmly and waved us over. "Aria, Nyssa, come meet Tiana. She is our arborist.""Arborist?" I repeated, shaking the blonde woman's hand. "That means you're a doctor for trees?""Exactly right," Serah laughed. "I watch over them and help when I can. But this old oak is not well. It may not last more than a couple of years. These growths are a sign of poor health, and the leaves it drops show invasive beetles are inside.""Is there anything you can do?" I asked."Not for a tree this old and this big, I'm afraid. It has already started to drop dead limbs. So in another year or two, we will talk about taking it down. We can use the wood for building and for fire. We try very hard not to cut down trees that are still healthy."She was a scientist, not a witch. Nyssa had to be disappointed."Aria,"
