Zane's POV

“Zane?” My father asked, the worry in his tone making my human half have some compassion towards the man. He was just worried about me, his son. Before me, he’d been the King of the Werewolves, and everything I knew about the kingdom, he’d taught me. He was a great father – strict but caring and kind to his pups. And I used to always listen to him and take his advice when I had tough decisions to make.

Lately, that hadn’t been the case.

I fought with him all the time, since he and Noah were the only ones who still could get away (and live) with that shit. They couldn’t take me in a physical fight and the few times we became physical, I remind them of that. Not that I actually wanted to hurt my family, but I’d been afraid that if I didn’t keep them at a distance, I would end up killing them…

“They-they say you had human blood on you,” he continued, as my brother came up next to him, as if ready to intervene if my wolf t

Zane's POVTrue that I’d broken the law – first by killing “innocent” humans and then by turning Arella without her consent – and by law, they could, or more accurately, should arrest me and have me thrown in a cell. But my family hadn’t turned on me so far and they wouldn’t turn on me now.So--- innocent by default?“The law states that you need the king’s permission before turning a human,” I growled, letting him go and watching him barely catching himself as he stumbled to the floor. “I gave myself permission.”“But she doesn’t know,” Noah growled, pushing me away from our parents and getting between us, facing me. “And she’s not a mate---” He abruptly cut himself off, as if suddenly realizing something, and gave me a stunned glance.“Is she?”The seconds of tension and hopeful glances I got wer

Arella’s POV“I don’t sense any magic coming from her,” a strange voice said somewhere far away. “Are we sure she’s human?”Magic?!Are we sure she’s human? What kind of questions were those? And goodness gracious, what was that smell? It smelled like a hospital only a million times more potent. If I could, I would have scrunched my nose. But I couldn’t because, for some reason, my body was completely unresponsive. Why couldn’t I move?Mild panic started to sliver into my chest and I found it hard to breathe. I tried to think of a reason, but my mind came up blank. I remembered arguing with Zane that morning – which wasn’t really that out of the ordinary. I swear, sometimes that man lives to make me old. No one had ever tested my patience the way Zane did.The stubborn, insurable, arrogant---Speaking of…

Arella's POVThe thought of some alien Illuminati secret organization fleetingly passed my mind, as more and more pieces of our conversation flickered across my mind. And denial right on its tail! There was no way that---!Right?“What if they send trackers?” the brother – Noah, apparently – persisted and leaned towards his brother, resting his hands on the rail on the other side of the bed. “If I know you the way I do, you didn’t make it look like some kind of animal attack or even covered it up.”Covered it up?!Suddenly, a whole host of other possibilities popped into my mind. Why Zane was alone in the woods. Why he seemed so familiar with my guns. Why he didn’t say anything about who he was or where he came from. What if he had been escaping something – or someone – himself? What if---?“I’ll. Fix. It

WARNING: the stereotypes are supposed to be funny! I promise, if you laugh--- you might go to hell, but you’ll be laughing when you get there…Arella’s POV“What crawled up his ass and died?” I asked, gesturing to the retreating form of his brother.“It’s complicated,” Zane growled, still glaring at the door. There was a slight cracking sound and I realized that the metal of the rail was about to give way to the big log’s fury. On instinct, I reached out and placed my hand over his, surprised at how warm his hands felt. And at the strange buzzing sensation that felt like electricity where our skin touched. As if sensing this too, Zane’s attention snapped from the door to our joined hands. The murderous aura that had been suffocating the room dissipated within a second. He didn’t waste a second to interlace our fingers and I could see his body finally relax. The death grip on the bed eased and he closed his eyes, a look of

Arella's POVAnd while I loved to tell his sexist and “mightier than thou”-ass off, I bit back the retort – for now! I didn’t know what it was, but that pressure in my head was back, and while it was uncomfortable, it wasn’t pain. It felt more like a stroke to my nerves, telling me he needed this.He needed to feel in some sort of control…I was in a hospital bed and I guessed, I hadn’t gotten here by magic. Which meant that it had been Zane that got me here. And judging from his outbursts, I had a feeling that he was more freaked out than anything. I had no idea what kind of memories this brought back for him and, with the small bit I did know about him, I bet he blamed himself more than anyone for what happened.Just like he blamed himself for his wife’s murder…So, I was going to give some leeway for that one – for now! I could be a bitch, but I wasn’t heartless

Zane’s POV“Then how would it be any different?”She asked as if it was an actual legitimate question! Just the thought of her in danger sent my wolf spiraling into an enraged frenzy. He’d failed to protect her and now she was telling us she would do something like that again if she felt she had to? How much blood had she lost? Because it had to be some trauma that had her speaking like that, right? She had to have hit her head and it knocked a couple of screws loose or something.Or did this woman just NOT have a survival instinct AT ALL?!Her track record said no, since she acted and talked to me as some would have done to a misbehaving pup. Which required some brass balls and then some. And I knew her job as a ranger could be dangerous, but---Jumping in front of a bullet? The woman HAD to be crazy!“Because---!”I bellowed the word, about to make her und

Zane's POVDespite lying on a hospital bed, she looked like a goddess. Her unruly black curls lay around her like a halo, framing her beautiful round face. Her eyes looked like black diamonds with streaks of gold and brown, giving them an ethereal warmth that seemed to seep straight into your very soul. And her scent of spring was only getting richer and fuller with her wolf about to come out. Breathing it in felt like Viagra shot straight to my cock, making it throb in the confines of my jeans.“Now imagine if I’d let bullets ruin those fine glutes,” she teased, and just to really drive home the awkward boner I now was sporting, she winked. “I would go to hell for it for sure.”“Stop making me want to laugh!” I tried to yell at her again, but--- fuck, I couldn’t stop laughing. That attitude and that smile---! Shit! All I wanted to do was to rip the dress the rest of the way down,

Zane's POVShe gaped at me, watching me as if I’d grown an extra head. Well, I guess I finally got to see a semi-normal reaction from her. Not that we’d told a lot of humans about our existence, but their reactions normally varied from terror, thinking that we were the devil reincarnated or some sort of monster, to hysterical laughter, thinking that we were joking. And then, terror would set in.Personally, I’d never overseen such a transaction. Ever since becoming king, I’d only ever sanctioned one transformation – she was the mate of an omega wolf in another pack – but he did the whole introduction thing himself and, since she was a mate, he’d also bitten her. But from what I’d heard, she’d been hysterical for days, terrified for months, and even then it had taken her almost a year before she accepted the transformation.I had only hours to get Arella up to speed…

Arella’s POVZane looked like I’d just slapped him, the information making his brain melt. He lowered his eyes, staring at the floor’s reflection as if it replayed the past. His hands were clutching his knees as though they were the only things holding him together. His anguish filled the space between us, thick and suffocating, and my heart ached at the sight of him unraveling. When he finally looked up, the pain in his eyes was raw, almost unbearable.“No,” he started, his voice barely above a whisper, as he shook his head. “It’s my fault. I should have---”“I know you think that,” I interrupted gently, leaning forward. “It’s called survivor’s guilt, Zane, and it’s a bitch to deal with. But in the end, it’s all in your head.”“How can you say that?” He snapped, his brow furrowed and confusion flickering across his face. “Hel

And repeatedly!”“I’m sorry,” he spoke softly, his fingers brushing against my skin and making sweet sparks erupt up my arm. “I thought I was protecting you.”“And fucking that Omega?” I hissed, hating how it hurt getting those words over my lips. “Just driving the point home?”“I haven’t touched anyone since I met you,” he replied, sounding confused--- and then realization dawned on him. I braced for the inevitable pain of more betrayal and hurt. What I got, however... “One of the Omegas did offer herself to me, but I declined.”I scoffed.“Does that happen a lot?” I asked sarcastically, not believing for a second that nothing happened. Arella’s POV“Wh-what?!”Was all I managed to stutter at the mind-blowing confession Zane had just made. A part of me didn’t even believe him. Yeah, it had to be some sort of ploy to get near me again. His wolf needed it so as not to go mad, or something!Still, I couldn’t stop the way my heart fluttered in my chest…“I love you,” he repeated--- and my damn heart skipped another beat! “I’ve been falling in love with you for a long time. That’s why I’ve been acting like a fucking asshole. I’ve been trying to protect you. Trying to convince everyone that you don’t matter to me, because I didn’t want your death on my hands! But apparently, I’ve been doing a crap job of it because people are making bet pools on when I’m going to mate you.”That--- was a lot of information to process!“You’re unbelievable,” I sna

Zane's POVWalking over, I checked my wolf, knowing that the beast always reacted badly when talking about the past. And sure enough, he was snarling at the air, as if the memories haunting him were physically hurting him. Hoping to calm him just a little, I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with my angel’s scent. The snarling stopped, but he remained on edge – good enough for now...“It was a year ago,” I began, sitting across from Arella, but finding it hard to remain still. “Some--- rogues… They---they somehow managed to pass the border patrol. Helena and Eva were out in the field that day, having a picnic, when--- when they swarmed the area. They managed to take Eva.”“They kidnapped her?” Arella gasped, horrified.I nodded, remembering the day like a weird nightmare. Everything had been so wrong. The sun had been shining and Noah had cracked some lame joke. Selena and our pare

Zane’s POVI paused outside the banquet hall, taking in a deep breath to calm my nerves. I had so much shit to make up for, I knew I was up shit’s creek without a paddle. Hell, at this point I was pretty sure the whole boat was gone!My wolf made a weird sound, which sounded a lot like approval. Making an internal check, I realized that the beast was calmer now, taking in her scent that was saturated in that area. He even made a contented purr, wagging his tail like a freaking puppy. I could even let down the mental barrier between us, and he just stood there, urging me to go to her…Bizarre beast!I carefully opened the door--- and had to stifle a gasp when I saw the inside. The hall was alive with color and the soft buzz of preparation. Streamers, balloons, and floral arrangements covered every surface, their cheerful vibrancy bringing life to an otherwise old and traditional wall decor. There were tables set up with

Zane's POVMy head snapped up, and he quickly explained: “They searched, but they didn’t think of looking beyond their borders. And the second girl told her friends she was surprising her family who lives in another pack. They even got a couple of messages from her, keeping them updated on her journey. They only got suspicions when the warning had come out to the packs, since she fit the description. So they contacted her family directly. She never showed up.”More bad news...“And her phone?” I asked, scrolling through the information that I already knew by heart. “If she kept messaging the family after she was taken it’s safe to assume that it’s her kidnappers who have her phone.”Noah nodded his agreement.“We’ve been trying to track it, but the signal jumps between cell towers, making it impossible to pin down,” he sighed in frustration. “Whoever is d

Zane’s POVThe next couple of days felt like they lasted a lifetime! The days had dragged on, stretching like an eternity as I struggled to keep myself together. Every moment apart from Arella felt like a punishment, like I was carving pieces of myself away. But I had to do it.For her. This is for her own protection, damn it! I kept repeating that to myself, even as my wolf thrashed against my barriers, demanding her presence, her touch. He didn’t understand—hell, sometimes I didn’t understand—why I couldn’t go to her. But I knew. If THEY realized how fucking much she meant to me, they’d target her, she’d be next. And I wouldn’t survive that. She had called me selfish...If she only knew how fucking painful this was, she wouldn’t be calling me selfish. My wolf was howling and raging against my mental barriers, tearing me up from the inside. His intense o

Arella's POVHe hissed the words, and I felt his pain deep in my soul. He grabbed my shoulders and pushed me back until my spine hit the wall. The sparks erupted across my skin, making me shudder despite my anger. With every breath, our bodies rubbed up against each other, making me have to stifle a moan. I hated how my body reacted to him, but I couldn’t help it. He was everything I wanted, and I had to physically hold myself back not to climb him like a tree and---“I’ve tried, okay? I tried letting you go, but I always come back to you.” He loomed over me, his voice a raw growl. “I’m a selfish prick—just like you said—because I can’t let you go! Even if that means---” His voice broke off and clarity returned to his eyes. He turned away, his words crashed over me like a wave, leaving me breathless. What the---?! Arella’s POVI stormed down the corridor, my footsteps echoing in the stillness of the palace as guards and servants dived out of sight, not about to get caught in this drama. My chest burned with a volatile mix of rage and hurt, each pounding beat of my heart driving the insult deeper. Mistress! He had the nerve to ask me to be his mistress. The word itself made my stomach churn and a growl slipped between my clenched teeth as my wolf howled out her outrage. What in god’s name had possessed him to ask me that?!I pushed through the winding halls toward my room, my fists clenched tightly at my sides. My mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and memories. Had I seriously given him the impression that I was that kind of person? Sure, no hate to whoever made their living like that and I could make several arguments about why I thought it should be legalized. But it wasn’t for me! So what in the ever-l
