I hadn’t expected Maximus to agree easily to raising Lauren’s daughter, but he did—without hesitation, even. Now, the daughter of my enemy would grow up calling me mother. And I promised myself that I would never make her feel alone or unloved. I would love her as though she were my own, and she would be called ‘Indie’.

Last night, I had fallen asleep in Maximus’ arms, crying from all the recent overwhelming events. Despite the ill-fated relationship I had with my father, I wept for him.

I had just woken up, my eyes heavy, and I felt too lazy to open them or even get out of bed. I was tempted to remain in bed when Maximus’ deep voice suddenly broke through the stillness.
