The air in the hidden cavern hissed as a dozen silver-tipped arrows sliced through the moonlight. Time slowed to a crawl—the "Dhum Tana" moment where life hangs by a thread.

"Down!" Kaelen roared.

He didn't move to save himself. Instead, he spun Elara behind his massive frame, using his own back as a shield. He swept his blood-stained sword in a lethal arc, the steel clashing against the incoming bolts. Clang! Clang! Clang! Most fell to the ground, but one grazed Kaelen’s shoulder, tearing through his tunic and drawing a line of dark, royal blood.

"Kaelen!" Elara screamed, her hands reaching for him.

"Don't move," he hissed, his eyes fixed on the opening in the ceiling.

Above them, Seraphina’s silhouette was framed by the moon, looking like a vengeful goddess. "Still playing the hero, my King? Even for the daughter of a murderer? You always were too noble for your own good. It’s why this kingdom needs a ruler with teeth."

"This is treason, Seraphina!" Kaelen’s voice echoed like thunder in the small space. "The Council will have your head for this."

"The Council will hear that the King was assassinated by the Silver-Moon spy," Seraphina laughed, a cold, brittle sound. "And I, the grieving widow, will lead our armies to wipe that pathetic pack off the map in your name. Reload!"

The click-clack of the crossbows re-arming filled the silence. They were trapped. The only exit was the narrow tunnel Elara had come through, and it was too small for Kaelen to move through quickly.

"Kaelen, the crack in the wall," Elara whispered, her voice trembling. "If you shift... if you shift into your wolf, you can break through the foundation. The stone is weak there."

"I can't shift in here," Kaelen rasped, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "The silver from that bolt... it’s suppressed my beast. It’s poison, Elara."

Elara looked at his wound. The blood wasn't red; it was turning a shimmering, toxic grey. Her heart plummeted. She looked up at the ceiling, then at the obsidian shard still clutched in her hand.

The wolf remembers what the man has forgotten. Marda’s words echoed in her mind.

"Give me your hand," Elara commanded.

Kaelen looked at her as if she were mad. "Elara, now is not the time—"

"Give me your hand!"

She grabbed his hand, pressing her raw, lye-burnt palm against his. The contact sent a jolt of pure energy through her, but she didn't pull away. She took the obsidian shard and sliced a deep line across her own palm, then pressed their bleeding wounds together.

"What are you doing?" Kaelen gasped, his eyes widening.

"The surrogate contract," she whispered, her forehead leaning against his. "It was signed in blood. I am bound to you. If I offer my strength... if I offer my soul... your wolf can take it. Take it, Kaelen! Break the silver!"

She pushed her power—the hidden, dormant strength of a True Luna—into the bond. It felt like her veins were filled with liquid fire. She gave him everything: her love for Toby, her defiance against Miller, her soul’s recognition of him as her mate.

Kaelen’s head snapped back. His silver eyes exploded into light, brighter than the moon itself. The grey poison in his veins was incinerated by the heat of the bond.

A terrifying, gutteral growl erupted from his chest—a sound so loud the loose rocks on the ceiling began to fall. His body began to expand, his muscles rippling and tearing through his tunic.

CRACK.

The sound of his bones shifting was like a forest of trees snapping in a storm. In a heartbeat, the man was gone. In his place stood a wolf the size of a war-horse, his fur as black as the void and his eyes glowing like twin stars.

The Black Winter had fully arrived.

Above them, Seraphina’s face went pale. "Fire! Fire now!"

But it was too late. The Black Winter didn't wait for the arrows. He lunged, not for the tunnel, but for the very walls of the cavern. He slammed his massive weight into the weak stone, the earth shaking under his power.

The cavern began to collapse.

"Elara, climb!" the wolf’s voice rumbled directly into her mind.

He tossed her onto his back, her fingers burying deep into his thick, soft fur. With one final, earth-shattering leap, he exploded through the ceiling, the stone disintegrating like glass.

They emerged into the night air, landing on the snowy grass of the upper gardens. Seraphina and her guards were thrown back by the force of the blast.

Kaelen stood over the Luna, his teeth bared, a low vibration coming from his throat that made the guards drop their weapons in terror. He looked like a god of death.

But then, he stopped. He turned his head, sniffing the wind.

From the direction of the border, a massive plume of red smoke rose into the sky. The signal for "The Hospital has fallen."

The Black Winter let out a howl that shook the very stars. He looked at Elara, who was still clinging to his back, her face wet with tears.

"They have him," she whispered.

Kaelen didn't hesitate. He didn't stay to kill Seraphina. He turned toward the north and began to run, each stride covering thirty feet of ground.

He wasn't running as a King anymore. He was running as a Mate.

The world broke apart in a scream of splintering timber and scorched earth. The thing inhabiting the shell of Alpha Vance lunged from the ruins of the pyre. Its body was a grotesque fusion of matted grey fur and pulsing purple vines. It moved with a twitchy, unnatural speed. Every step left trails of dark smoke in the freezing morning air. The Southern Army, once a wall of disciplined steel, fractured in a panic. Their leader’s shadow-infected jaw snapped at his own men. The soldiers scattered like leaves in a gale. They dropped their spears and shields in the mud. The very man they had come to support had transformed into a nightmare beyond their comprehension. "Stand your ground!" Kaelen’s roar acted as a physical force. It stopped the retreating warriors in their tracks. He ignored the army to focus on the monster. "Vance is gone. You fight for the living now. Otherwise, you die as husks." Kaelen’s presence stabilized the chaos. He stood like an obsidian tower against the enc

Elara didn't fall like a victim; she descended like a vengeful star. The wind tore at her hair, and the thousand-foot drop that should have been her death was nothing more than a path for her power. As she fell, she channeled every ounce of the golden "True Luna" light into the black-steel blade. The sword, once cold and dark, now hummed with a resonance that vibrated through the air, creating a golden trail against the grey sky. Dhum tana na na... Ten feet from the ground, she swung the blade downward. A wave of golden energy hit the earth first, creating a cushion of light that shattered the frozen mud and sent a shockwave through the front lines of the Southern Alphas. Elara landed in a crouch, the heavy sword embedded inches deep in the soil. She rose slowly, the golden light in her eyes so intense that the nearest wolves—massive, battle-scarred beasts—whimpered and backed away. "You want to judge my children?" Elara’s voice wasn't a scream. It was a low, vibrating comma

The victory at the High Temple felt less like a triumph and more like a stay of execution. Three days had passed since Elara fell from the cliffs of the Iron Mountains. Three days since the silver and gold had combined to shatter the Eclipse. Now, the Royal Citadel was a hive of frantic activity. Blacksmiths hammered out silver-plated shields around the clock, and the scent of fear in the streets was so thick it nearly drowned out the smell of the coming spring. Elara sat in the window seat of the Royal Suite, the morning sun warming her skin. In her lap, the twins were finally asleep. The silver-eyed boy, whom she had named Kaelen Jr. (though she called him 'KJ' in her heart), was a restless sleeper, his tiny hands already clutching at the air as if fighting invisible foes. The second, Lucius, was unnervingly still, his dark runes pulsing with a faint, rhythmic violet light whenever he dreamed. "They are too quiet," a voice rumbled from the doorway. Elara didn't need to turn.

Falling felt less like dying and more like returning to the sky. As Elara plummeted down the jagged face of the Iron Mountains, the wind screamed in her ears, threatening to tear the silk sling from her chest. But she didn't close her eyes. She stared down at the silver speck in the darkness—the only light in a world swallowed by the Eclipse. Kaelen! she screamed through the bond. Catch us! Below, the massive black wolf froze. His silver eyes snapped upward, catching the golden shimmer of Elara’s aura as she fell through the clouds. A roar erupted from his throat—not of pain, but of a terrifying, absolute command. Kaelen didn't wait. He lunged toward the base of the cliff, his massive paws shattering the frozen earth. He didn't care about the Feral wolves closing in on his flanks or the purple vines reaching for his throat. He leaped into the air, his body shifting back into human form mid-flight, his arms outstretched to catch the only thing that mattered in the universe. T

The High Temple didn’t just grow cold; it became a tomb. Outside, the fury of Kaelen’s assault had gone silent, replaced by an eerie, suffocating stillness. Within the Sanctuary of the Pure, the air was thick with the scent of ozone and the metallic tang of Elara’s golden blood. Elara lay on the silk-draped bed, her fingers digging so deep into the mattress that the fabric tore. A scream built in her throat, but she swallowed it, turning it into a low, guttural growl. The cramps had evolved into a rhythmic, crushing force that felt like her very soul was being split in two. "Stay with me, Elara," High Priestess Selene whispered, her violet eyes glowing in the dim candlelight. She held Elara’s hand, her skin translucent against Elara’s sweat-soaked palm. "The moon is reaching its peak. The Council is gathered in the chamber below. They can feel the power rising. They think the harvest is ready." "They won't... touch them," Elara gasped, her eyes flashing between amber and incande

  • The Alpha King’s Surrogate Secret   Chapter 13: The High Temple of Sorrows

The High Temple of the Great Moon did not feel like a place of worship. Built into the jagged cliffs of the Iron Mountains, it was a monolith of cold, white marble and windowless corridors. As the heavy iron gates groaned shut behind Elara, the sound echoing through the cavernous foyer, she felt the final thread of the King’s protection snap. The air here was thin and smelled of stale incense and old stone. There were no gardens, no sounds of life—only the rhythmic, haunting chanting of the Priestesses in the lower levels. "This way, Vessel," one of the Temple Guards barked, gesturing with a silver-tipped pike. Elara didn’t flinch at the word vessel. She kept her chin high, her fingers intertwined over her stomach. She could feel the twins humming beneath her skin, a restless, golden vibration that seemed to grow stronger the deeper they went into the mountain. Silas walked two paces behind her, his footsteps silent, his face a mask of stone. They were led to the "Sanctuary of
