LOGINElena’s POV
I was jerked awake by the cold early morning air whipping against my bare skin.
A gasp tore through me as I shot upright. My insides no longer burned from the blind lust of the heat, and the ache in my heart seemed to have dimmed. For a quiet second, I felt a strange sense of peace.
Then my gaze landed on the man sleeping beside me, and adrenaline shot through my veins again.
I scrambled backward in sheer panic, pressing my hand against my mouth to silence a scream.
The face. I knew that face. Everyone in the realm knew that face.
Adrian Blackwood.
The Alpha King. Ryan's future father-in-law. Fiona's father.
I had just slept with the man my ex-mate was marrying. The most powerful and feared Alpha alive, a man notorious for his hatred of women. And I was sitting three feet away from him in his shirt.
I couldn't breathe or think.
I haven’t quite recovered from last day’s shambles, and I feel as though the goddess has toyed with me yet again.
Trembling, I slipped into his shirt, hastily buttoning it with shaky fingers as I fled into the forest before he even stirred.
By some miracle, I made it back to the pack borders without being seen. Yet before relief could settle, dread washed over me when I noticed a familiar car parked outside my cottage.
And sitting on the hood, waiting in the fading shadows of dawn, was Ryan.
He looked… disheveled. Judging by the state of his wrinkled suit and tousled hair, he must’ve been here for hours. His eyes snapped to me when I stopped dead in my tracks, and he promptly marched over.
“Ryan? What are you—”
His palm cracked across my face, silencing me. I stumbled back, my hand flying to my cheek instinctively. For the first time, my wolf reacted to him with something that wasn’t born from love or affection—a menacing growl.
“Whose shirt is that?!” Ryan snarled, his eyes raking over me as a mix of fury and possessiveness darkened his expression.
The sting on my cheek bloomed into pure rage. After rejecting me, publicly humiliating me, and throwing me out like trash, how dare he hit me and look at me like I belonged to him?
“I don't see how that’s any of your business, Alpha,” I spat bitterly. “Don't you have a charming fiancée to spoil?”
Ryan’s eyes narrowed. I braced myself for another blow, but instead, he stepped closer until his chest hovered near mine. His fingers rose to my face, unexpectedly gentle as they caressed the skin he had just bruised.
“I was worried sick about you, Elena,” he sighed. “You know how much I love you.”
I flinched, scurrying away from his touch before staring at him blankly. Was this some kind of joke? Hours ago, I might have believed him. Now, his lie made my stomach twist.
“Aren't you tired of lying to yourself?” I asked.
Ryan clenched his jaw, the mask starting to slip. “Can't you see the bigger picture?” he hissed, grabbing me by the arms before I could back away.
“Everything I’m doing is for us,” he continued, that fake softness returning to his voice. “Once I marry Fiona, I’ll become the Alpha King. And I will make you my Queen.”
I was about to shake him off when he leaned closer to whisper in my ear, “Until then, I’ll keep you as my mistress.”
His shameless words stunned me.
“I’ll buy you a house. I’ll provide for you and your mother so you don’t ever have to work again,” he continued, but as fury rose inside me, I barely registered what he was saying.
“Just think about it,” he pressed when I remained silent. “Your life will be so much better.”
“Forgive me, Alpha,” I finally muttered, my voice low and cold. “But I have absolutely no interest in being your dirty little secret.”
In a fit of rage, Ryan whirled me around before I escaped him, knocking the wind out of me as he slammed me against the side of his car. “You really wanna turn down my generosity?” he growled low, giving me no time to answer before his lips latched onto mine.
It wasn’t a kiss, but an assault.
I was completely helpless as his fingers clamped around my breast. He squeezed hard, twisting my nipple between his thumb and index finger to force a whimper out of me.
“This is what you want, right?” he rasped against my mouth, sounding every bit like the sick psycho I now knew he was. “Only I can give you this.”
“Stop, Ryan!” I half-ordered, half-begged as he continued to ignore my struggles.
That only seemed to spike his anger. His grip tightened painfully before he buried his face into my neck, his sharp canines scraping against my skin. My heart stopped, terror flooding me as I understood what he was trying to do.
He wanted to forcefully mark me and chain my soul to his forever so I could never escape.
“Alpha, please! Let her go!” a sudden cry rang out.
My mother had rushed out of the cottage, throwing herself at Ryan’s feet. She grabbed at his legs, weeping as she begged him to stop.
Ryan froze. Slowly, he pulled away from me to look down at my mother. I almost felt relieved. Until I watched a sadistic smile spread across his face.
“Guards!” Ryan barked, and just like at the engagement party, soldiers came out of nowhere. Then his eyes returned to mine as he commanded, “Throw this old hag in the dungeons. She’s a spy working for a rival pack. I’ll have her executed for treason.”
My blood turned to ice as horror washed over me. Ryan had gone completely mad. He was ready to condemn my innocent mother just to break me.
“No!” I tried, but the guards still lunged forward, grabbing my mother by her frail arms. She cried out, looking at me in terror as they dragged her away.
Before I could do anything, Ryan leaned back in. “Now, Elena. Let’s try this again,” he whispered against my lips, twisted triumph burning in his eyes.
Elena’s POVAs the tension rose, I decided to change the subject.“So, Judy,” I called. “I brought a few gifts.”I stepped towards her, pulling out the snacks I had prepared.“Nice! I can’t stand hospital food anymore,” she complained, not wasting a second before going to town on the tray of snacks.Fiona twisted her nose, clearly judging her sister’s un-princess-like manners. Before she could say anything, I cleared my throat.“I, uh… I have something else for you,” I said.Judy arched an eyebrow, surprised and excited. “More gifts?”I nodded, smiling as I reached into the bag again, though a flicker of nervousness crossed my chest. Before I revealed what I had crafted for her in public, I hesitated, wondering if she would actually like my gift.“Considering how much love you put into it, I have no doubt she’ll adore it,” my wolf encouraged me.Her words gave me enough courage to push past my hesitation. I finally pulled out my crochet craft and handed it to my best friend. The secon
Elena’s POVAfter handling the remaining matters, the Alpha King and I returned to our room to sleep. One good night of rest was all we needed to replenish our energies. The next morning was the first one in days when we could finally sit quietly at the table to enjoy a relaxed, quiet breakfast together. There were no urgent matters that required our attention, no tragedies to steal our peace. For once, we could eat side by side with nothing else weighing on us.Or so I thought, until the double doors of the Dining Room suddenly opened.I froze when my eyes landed on Ryan and Fiona walking inside.Uneasiness made my stomach turn as I watched a shadow of a smile curl on my ex-mate’s lips.“What’s the matter, my Queen?” he said teasingly, cocking his head. “You don’t look very happy to see us.”My eyes widened before I schooled my expression, keeping my surprise and apprehension hidden.“My apologies, Alpha Ryan. Of course, it’s a pleasure to have you join us for breakfast,” I lied, for
Elena’s POVThough the chaos had passed, the following days weren’t exactly peaceful. The aftermath of Karen’s disappearance had left a lot of us to deal with. Phantom Pack had not only lost its Gamma in the recent events, but a handful of warriors—including James, one of the best we had. The Alpha King was very busy, and as his Queen, I made sure to assist him through everything. First, we had to put together a last-minute ceremony so the pack could pay their respects and honor the fallen warriors. While the pack grieved, I worked restlessly alongside Adrian and Dylan to organize death gratuities and pensions for the families of the warriors we had lost.Only after three days, when most of it had been taken care of, could I finally take a brief moment to breathe again.“Now, all there’s left to do is find a new Gamma for Phantom Pack,” the Alpha King announced, letting out a tired breath as he flopped onto his chair across from me.“Do you have any one in mind?” I asked, taking my a
Elena’s POV“Shit,” I muttered under my breath, rushing out of the room.“Wait, Elena!” Judy called, jumping off the bed to chase after me, but I didn’t stop. Not until my eyes landed on the Alpha King standing in the middle of the hallway.“Where is she? Did you see Elena?” he frantically questioned a group of nurses.“I’m here!” I announced without hesitation.By the time Adrian turned around, relief flooding his eyes as they landed on me, I was already launching myself into his arms. The moment his arms closed around me, the tension I’d been carrying finally eased. My wolf finally settled, purring contentedly as I melted into his embrace, and for the first time since he’d left, I felt like I could finally breathe again. Our mate was here with us again.“Elena,” he breathed out with so much relief it made my chest ache. After a few seconds, he pulled away just slightly, holding me at arms’ length to let his eyes scour over me.“Are you okay? You’re not hurt, are you?” he asked despe
Elena’s POVFor a few precious moments, I allowed myself to simply savor the feeling of having my best friend in my arms. She had finally forgiven me.The realization filled my chest with a warmth I hadn’t realized how badly I’d been missing. I’d spent so long carrying the weight of what I’d done, wondering if I had permanently lost one of the most important persons in my life. Now, I finally had her back.Eventually, I reluctantly forced myself to pull away.“I’m sorry for scaring you earlier,” I told her with a grimace. “I’ll leave you to rest now.”Judy arched an eyebrow at me. “And what are you gonna do?”I was quiet for a moment before hesitantly admitting, “I’ll return to the border and wait for the Alpha King there.”“No, you’re not!” Judy snapped at once, grabbing my wrist just in case I might try to run away.“But what if he needs me?” I pondered.“My father is the Alpha King. He can handle himself against whatever comes his way,” she reassured me with conviction. “We don’t k
Elena’s POVWhile I was stunned by the horrified sound that broke from Judy, the initial terror in her eyes slowly faded, leaving only concern.“Oh my Goddess! What happened to you?!” she questioned frantically, her hands flying to my body as she tried to identify where the blood was coming from.“I’m fine, Judy! Nothing happened to me,” I said calmly, trying to ease her worries.Unfortunately for me, she refused to believe my words.“What are you talking about? That’s a lot of blood! Goddess!” she breathed out, one of her trembling hands covering her mouth in sheer horror.“It’s not mine!” I insisted.Again, she didn’t care.“Where’s Doctor Ophelia?” she asked, already glancing around. When she couldn’t find her immediately, she declared, “Shit! We don’t have time to go looking for her. Come here!”Before I could try to make her listen to me, Judy dragged me to her room, determined to take care of me. In the end, I just let her, realizing it would be easier to let her see for herself
Elena’s POVToday was supposed to be the day I celebrated the 25th birthday of my fated mate, Alpha Ryan of the Shadowfang Pack. Instead, I stood frozen as I watched him kiss another woman in front of the entire pack. “Shadowfang!” Ryan addressed the crowd, his proud smile growing larger as he pu
Elena’s POV“You’re crazy!” I yelled at his face, tears of sadness and anger burning down my face. “You’ll never have me again!”A sinister spark danced in Ryan’s eyes as he grabbed me by the throat. “We’ll see about that.”He squeezed my throat tighter and tighter until I could no longer breathe.
Adrian POVWhen morning came, I made my way back to Shadowfang Pack not with the imposing march of a King, but with the hurried steps of someone desperately trying not to be seen.I was a mess. Dirt stained my skin, and my clothes were filthy and wrinkled. What was left of them, anyway. Since I cou
Elena’s POV“No! Stop this! Please!” I tried, but it was useless.Without hesitation, the guards grabbed me by the arms and tossed me out of the packhouse like yesterday’s trash, and I hit the ground hard. The agony of my severed mate bond, combined with the unbearable torment of my worsening heat,
