Five’s POV

The gunshot echoed through the night, piercing straight to the space I’d tucked away my feelings.

A body fell, the thud louder than it was in the silent night.

Everything moved in slow motion—Twelve on the floor, a puddle of blood slowly forming around her, the siren getting louder, footsteps gaining on us.

A sob caught in my throat.

I ran to her—or tried to.

But something held me back.

A weight.

I looked down, and froze in horror.

I was clutching a rock, its jagged edges glist

Five’s POV‘More than they wanted us to know about.’ Elijah’s words rang in my ears as I moved. The room was empty, but the King could walk in at any time. Still. My heart hammered in my chest as I dropped the rag. Being afraid was not going to get me the answers I needed. I needed to act. The shelf was was exactly where it had always been.Third row. Dark spine. No title.I crossed to it without letting myself hesitate, because hesitation was how you talked yourself out of things that needed doing. My fingers found the spine and pulled it free carefully, quietly, like the room itself might tell on me.It was thinner than I expected.I opened it, my fingers trembling slightly. The script inside was the old language—dense, careful lines of it filling every page with no illustrations, no breaks, nothing to orient me except the words themselves. I turned to the first page and let my eyes move across it the way I had learned to at the altar, not forcing it, just allowing.Meaning

Five’s POV I hated to admit it. But my heart beat a little faster at the thought of seeing Elijah again. “You’re in a good mood.” I paused, slowly looking up from the shelf I was cleaning. The King stood there, his shoulder braced on a wall, his arms folded, and those stormy eyes pinned on me. My heart skipped a beat. He tilted his head slightly. “Last time I saw you this excited was when you were drugged and eager to get fucked.” I pressed my lips together, fighting back the heat that crept up my neck. I had pushed the memory to the back of my mind—the memory of touching myself while he watched. I scoffed, going back to wiping down the shelf—this time with more aggression than was necessary. “You’ve cleaned that already.” I paused, clenching my jaw. “I’m being thorough.” “You’re being obvious,” he replied. I set the cloth down and turned to face him fully, because staring at a shelf while he watched me was somehow worse than looking at him directly. He hadn’

Five’s POV The food given to slaves was scraps. That wasn’t self-pity. It was just fact. We got whatever the wolves didn’t finish at mealtimes, divided into portions big enough to keep you functional, but small enough that you didn’t forget your place. Some days it was half a bread roll and something grey that might have been meat once. Some days it was less. You didn’t think about it too long, you ate it because you had to So when Elijah appeared at the narrow servants’ corridor where I ate my meals alone—by choice, because the other slaves looked at the King’s sigil on my dress with an unease I didn’t have the energy to manage—I assumed he was passing through. He wasn’t. He stopped in front of me, produced a cloth-wrapped bundle from somewhere inside his jacket like it was nothing, and set it on the bench beside me. I stared at it. “What is that?” I asked. “Food,” he responded, settling against the opposite wall. “I have food,” I stated, gesturing at the grey thing on

A sob caught in my throat. I ran to her—or tried to.But something held me back. A weight. I looked down, and froze in horror. I was clutching a rock, its jagged edges glistening with something red, something warm that stained my hand. My body trembled, the horror clogging my throat. Slowly, my eyes moved—past the puddle of blood, past Twelve, and landed on another. Fifty nine. Her eyes, like Twelve’s, were wide and empty. I screamed. ***I woke up with a gasp, sweat bead on my forehead, a scream caught in my throat. My chest heaved up and down, the terror and grief clinging to my very soul. The room was empty, I was alone. And I was grateful for that. Gra

Five’s POVThe garden was the one place in the citadel that didn’t feel like it was watching me.No guards stationed at the corners, no omega wolves watchinv with those eyes that made my skin prickle—just soil and pale morning light and the quiet. Or as much quiet I could get. I got occasional stares and whispers from passersby. “It’s her,” a human girl had whispered, her eyes fixed on me, “it’s the King’s slave.”I’d pretended not to notice, busying myself with the soil. Mrs Bennet had assigned me here a day ago without explanation, sliding it into my duties list between polishing the east corridor sconces and preparing the King’s evening tray. I hadn’t questioned it. Gardening meant outside. Outside meant sky. Sky meant away from the king—even if for a few hours. I’d take it.I was crouched between two rows of something green and stubborn—pulling weeds with more focus than the task probably warranted—when I felt a presence behind me.“You’re doing that wrong.”I looked up, sta

Five's POV We arrived back at the citadel before sunset. I never thought being here could bring me so much relief. Too much had happened since we left. And what stood out most to me—beneath the memory of fucking myself in the presence of the king—was the fact that I’d read a dead language. A language only the King was supposed to understand. I exhaled, taking the long walk back to my room. A guard was already waiting at the door when I got there. I slowed instinctively. “Come with me,” he commanded. I hesitated, glancing around. The hallway was completely deserted. And the last time I had followed someone in a deserted hallway, it had led to a chain of events that led to her death. “Did the King command my presence?” I asked, carefully. He turned, his expression blank. “Don’t make me repeat myself, slave.” I balled my fist, but did as he said. He led me through a series of hallways, then finally, he pushed a door open. Tje room wasn’t what I’d expected. T

549’s POVIt was time. For the first time, I wasn’t clad in a white dress. I wore a black trouser and a black turtleneck top. It felt… thrilling, like my first real act of rebellion. I was getting out of here with my friends. We’ll find other humans, find that paradise I’d dreamed of. We’ll be
