Hilda covered my fading bruises, styled my auburn hair into loose waves, and pushed me into heels I could barely stand in.

When I looked in the mirror, I didn't recognize the woman looking back. Beautiful. Confident. Unbroken. I smiled at her, and for once she smiled back like she meant it.

The club was everything Hilda promised. Loud, crowded, overwhelming in the best possible way.

We drank. We danced. We laughed. For a few hours I forgot the broken bond, the murder no one would let me deny, the auction and the dungeon and Corvain's nightmare eyes. I forgot everything but the music and the lights and the pure animal joy of being free.

I was weaving back toward our table when I felt it. A presence. Powerful. Watching.

I turned.

A man stood a few feet away, and my breath caught in my throat. Silver-white hair that caught the club lights. Sharp, elegant features. Eyes like molten gold. He looked young, early thirties at most, but he carried himself with the weight of someone who commanded rooms without trying.

"May I?" His voice was deep and smooth, aged whiskey poured slow.

I glanced at Hilda. She gave me a wildly unsubtle thumbs-up.

I came here to reclaim my life, didn't I?

"Please." I nodded to the empty chair.

He sat with fluid grace. "I'm Jake."

"Liya." I gave him half my name on purpose.

"Liya." He said it like he was tasting it. "What brings you here tonight?"

"Needed to forget reality for a while." I sipped my drink, feeling bold. "You?"

"Same, actually." His smile was easy. "Though reality's looking a lot more interesting all of a sudden."

We talked. He was funny, quick, easy in a way I wasn't used to. He asked about me without prying, and I gave him answers that weren't quite lies. The knot in my chest slowly loosened.

Then the pain came.

Sharp. Sudden. It lanced through me and I gasped, my hand flying to my chest.

"Liya? What's wrong?"

The broken bond throbbed in time with my heartbeat. Somewhere out there, Dayn had moved on to someone else, and even shattered, even rejected, the bond made me feel the echo of it.

He gets to move on. And I get to bleed for it.

I looked up at Jake through the haze, and something reckless rose in me.

"Do you want to get out of here?"

His eyes widened slightly. "Liya, you've been drinking. Are you sure?"

"I'm sure." I stood, unsteady, and held out my hand. "Unless you're not interested."

He took it, his grip warm and certain. "I'm very interested. I just want you sure it's what you want."

Another pulse of pain rolled through the dead bond.

Fuck the bond. Fuck Dayn.

"I'm sure."

We barely made it out the door before we were kissing, and the moment his mouth found mine, something in me went still. Not pain. Not revenge. Something that felt, impossibly, like coming home.

He pulled back, breathing hard. "Do you want to go somewhere better? My hotel's not far—"

"There," I said against his mouth. Later. Now I just needed to feel wanted by someone who was choosing me back. "Come on."

He kept asking if I was sure. That was the thing I'd remember afterward. Every step of the way, this stranger kept making certain the choice was mine.

For the first time in longer than I could remember, it was.

I texted Hilda one line — ‘leaving, I'm okay, see you tomorrow’ — and let him lead me to his car.

I woke at dawn with a pounding head, in a room I didn't recognize, next to a man I'd met hours ago.

Sober now, reality crashed down.

‘What did I do?’

I'd gone home with a stranger whose last name I didn't know. I hadn't thought about a single consequence.

Stupid. So stupid.’ I was barely starting to piece my life back together.

I slid out of bed as quietly as I could, gathered my scattered clothes, dressed in under a minute, and slipped out the door.

Silverpine — Lord Silas CorvainThe cell was empty.Corvain stood in the doorway with his coat still buttoned against the dungeon chill and looked at the abandoned ropes on the floor, the cot dragged beneath the window, the gap in the bars with its edges scraped bright and smeared brown where she’d bled forcing herself through.Behind him, the guards had gone the color of old tallow. Somewhere up the spiral stairs, he could hear Alpha Dayn shouting at someone, the words lost, the fury clear.Corvain crouched. He picked up a frayed loop of rope, turned it in his gloved fingers, examined the fibers where she’d sawed through it against raw stone. Twenty minutes of work, he judged. Perhaps thirty. With bound hands, in the cold, after a beating and a rejection and an auction. He smiled.“Sir,” the auction house steward said nervously, “the pack extends its deepest apologies. Naturally your payment will be returned in full&

“No,” I said. “No. It’s not possible.”Hilda hadn’t moved from her chair. She had that terrible patience on her face, the kind healers wear when they’re waiting for the truth to finish arriving.“Merliya—”“I was a virgin, Hilda. Two days ago. You cannot— people don’t— it doesn’t happen like that.” I was pacing her kitchen, three steps, turn, three steps, my arms wrapped around myself. “It takes weeks to scent a pregnancy. Everyone knows that. Weeks.”“For most bloodlines, yes.”“Then you’re smelling something else. Soap. His cologne. Something.”“I know what I’m smelling.” Her voice was soft and immovable, a hand on a struggling patient. “But you’re right that it shouldn’t be there. Not this soon. Not this strong.” She stood. “Which is why we’re going to my clinic

Alpha King Jake POV“Cancel the council session.”My steward stopped so abruptly that the papers in his arms slid sideways. In six years, through two border disputes, one assassination attempt, and a rogue incursion that cost us forty warriors, I had never once cancelled a council session.“Your Majesty, the northern delegates arrived last night. Alpha Rennick has waited three weeks for—”“Then he can wait one more day. Cancel it.”I turned back to the map table before he could argue. Behind me I heard the careful silence of a man rearranging his understanding of his king, and then the door closing softly. The map showed the capital and its districts, marked with pins my guards had placed through the night. The club. The streets around it. The hotel. And beyond that, nothing. She had walked out of my room at dawn and dissolved into a city of two hundred thousand wolves like smoke.Liya. Half a name, given d

The sun was fully up by the time I reached Hilda’s street, and I felt every hour of the night before in my bones.I’d walked most of the way. The hotel had been closer to town than I remembered, or maybe shame just made distances shorter. Either way, I slipped through her gate with my heels in my hand and my dress wrinkled beyond saving, praying she was still asleep. She was sitting at the kitchen table with two cups of tea already poured.“Well, well.” She didn’t even look up from her cup. “The dead walk among us.”“Don’t.”“I’m just saying. I got a five-word text at midnight and then nothing. I nearly called the border patrol.” Her mouth curved. “Then I remembered the way that man was looking at you and decided the border patrol would only be in his way.”Heat crawled up my neck. “Hilda.”“Was he kind to you?”The question was gentler than the teasing, and it caught me off guard. I thought of him asking, over and over, if I was sure. Checking. Making the choice mine every single tim

Alpha King Jake POVI woke at dawn out of old habit, military and Alpha both. The bed beside me was empty. My wolf snapped to attention. Where is she?Her clothes were gone along with her shoes, phone. She'd left without a word.My wolf growled, unsettled. He'd been strange about her all night, pressing close, wanting to mark and claim a woman who wasn't our mate. We would have known if she were. And yet there'd been a pull there, something he recognized even if I didn't.I rang for my old butler in the next room."Good morning, Alpha King, I already—" He stopped in the doorway, nostrils flaring, his face going pale.I was on my feet at once, wolf snarling. "What is it?""Forgive me." He recovered, but his voice carried something careful. "I didn't take you for a man who'd… sow wild oats with a woman already carrying.""What are you talking about?""The she wolf who was here all night. Her scent's still thick in the air." He hesitated. "As is her cub's."The floor seemed to tilt. "You
