Regina’s POV

.

I hated Alphas.

Any sort of alpha that took a breath next to me was an enemy.

I never liked any of them.

Why should they have more rights than anyone who wasn’t of the same sub gender like them.

I stared down at the wad of cash that I had managed to save with Gran Layla, she even had it wrapped up for me and given to me with a word of advice that she continuously drummed in my head.

‘Leave this place ’

How do I run away from my step - father?

Is it even possible?

I hid the money in my back pocket when I caught sight of the little house with a veranda at the edge of the pack’s border.

It belonged to my ancestors who passed it on to the next generation. My mum was supposed to be the next owner but …

And now it was in the hands of my step- father, unfortunately. My current legal guardian. Gary always acted perfectly normal in public; but we did not get along well at all.

His gaze always lingered on me and his comments were often unfiltered. He made no secret of the fact that he had absolutely no respect for women- especially omegas in general.

I came in through the front door and trudged up to my bedroom. I grabbed a towel as I stepped out of my clothes wrapping the towel around myself just as the door to my bedroom opened immediately.

My step father, Gary who stood at the doorway.

“You should have knocked!” I snapped at him frustratingly. “What do you want?”

He scrunched up his nose. “Will you calm yourself down? You smell like spoilt milk.”

I rolled my eyes knowing my usually sweet vanilla smell must have gone putrid because of his presence.

I pursed my lips together trying not to bite his head off.

The way his eyes were scanning me shrewdly caused an ugly shudder down my spine. There was a calculating look to him, his mouth curling into a satisfied smirk.

I tightened my towel around myself and glared at him. I had no idea he was home, I would have bolted my door shut and stuck a chair behind the handle if I had known.

“I want to talk to you.” He finally answered moving away from the doorway and walking up towards me.

I instinctively walked backward until I was on the other side of the bed. My heart was pounding but I kept my chin up firmly refusing to let his scent tower over mine.

The last thing I wanted was for the obnoxious alpha to think he had some power over me.

“What?” I let out.

“This place is getting old and it needs maintenance.” Gary replies plopping down lazily on my bed. “I heard the women in market talking about how the Royal kitchen needed more workers.”

“I didn’t know you were friends with the market people,” I answered cautiously. “And why are you telling me this?”

Gary stared into space for a few moments before locking his gaze back on me. “Well I’m out of money, and who’s been funding this house? Me! Now that I don’t have the money to do that, who’s going to take up the responsibility? You!”

I swallowed hard.

He must have ulterior motives behind this.

No way he wants me to work in the kitchen of the palace without getting something in return and I know it’s not just the money.

“Why the palace? What happened to take up a normal job? I could help teach the pups at the kindergarten. There are many other things I can do.”

“Why do you ask so many questions?” Gary grumbled rolling his eyes. “I’m just trying to help you make a living.”

I almost snorted at that. My step father was more likely to kill for his own selfish gains than help me.

“I can’t!” I finally said.

“Whether you can or won’t do it is not important.” Gary hissed, suddenly bolting to his feet and marching toward me.

I was backed up against a corner and could go no further when he grabbed my arm and shook me hard. A tendril of fear wrapped around my neck.

“You stupid pup. Would you rather live like a lowly peasant and pass up an offer to be among a royal worker?”

“Why do you make their jobs sound pleasant? They are not ‘royal’ servants. They are called servants!” I corrected him.

“Well you wouldn’t end up being a lowly servant like them if the king takes pleasure in you.” He suggested. “It’s a great opportunity—.”

I scoffed. “You are offering me up to be a scapegoat to the king? The same king who-.”

“Is a slayer, I know. I have a lot riding on this, Regina.” He grounded out, his eyes flashing red for a moment then signaling his alpha was threatening to come out. “You should be lucky I’m only sneaking you out to be a servant among royals, do you know an alpha of the neighboring pack has taken a liking to you and wants you in his harem, I might just let him. You wouldn’t want that, will you now?”

My mouth fell open with a gasp as I stared at him.

He just threatened to give me away to a stranger.

The nerve.

“You wouldn’t dare!” I uttered in a low hard voice.

Gary smiles cruelly. “Oh, I would. Do you know what happens to omegas who are not under a male companion? They get treated like dirt, like they aren’t people. Do not make me forsake you, you insufferable pup. I’m the only reason why you still have your dignity, nobody can speak for you because of me, an alpha who is able to defend you!”

“You haven’t defended me a day in your life!” I talk back at him.

“Would you rather I denounce you as my family and let you stay on your own. I’ll see how you survive by yourself.” He threatened.

Bike rose in my throat at his emphasis on leaving me alone.

Omegas were often thrown to the low-ranking descent and if they didn’t have a higher sub-gender to protect them, they were treated like scum.

“When do I leave?” I asked in the steadiest voice I could manage.

He blinked, smiled, and eased back, releasing my arm although I was already certain that his fingers were going to leave me with a cuff of bruises.

“Tonight actually.” He answered turning around and wandering to my closet.

Panic immediately bubbles up in my throat at the thought of traveling alone with him.

"Why do we have to do that? We can just leave early tomorrow morning."

Gary shook his head. "I'm not a morning person so you better start packing. Bring your nicest clothes, like I said, you might attract the attention of the king."

But I don’t want to.

No one wants to.

No nice things have been heard about the Alpha King Mattel and I doubt they were any to be said.

He was simply known as the cursed alpha among all the multiple packs in our region and that was it.

Gary glanced at me with a scowl before leaving and I sprang to my feet and shut the door.

I backed up against it, closing my eyes and pressing a hand at my wildly beating heart.

I could've put my foot down and fought him about it but other than losing the dignity I had so dearly and the fear of me being thrown out to the streets.

An omega alone was really dangerous.

But did I really want to spend the rest of my life dodging Gary when he staggers home drunk or lying awake in my bed at night, dreading the sound of his footsteps heading toward my room?

He was a ticking bomb at this point.

I could run away but I had nobody else. I had no money either.

Running was definitely a better option than staying in the same vicinity with a deadly being.

King Mattel, who was “cursed” with the most horrifying, frightening - monstrous - imprecation ever told: he who knows his own death day.

King Mattel, who had been cast out by his own House and kingdom as an abomination, who they say, his wolf form is the most terrifying existence in all the land.

They say that King Mattel is the most reviled and feared presence to have ever been born, and that even to meet his gaze is the equivalent of succumbing to a fate worse than death.

And now, I’m being pushed to work for this same man.
