Chapter 3

작가: September
Three days passed in a haze of weakness and pain.

The Wolf Soul Degeneration had progressed far faster than even the healer had feared.

I lost the ability to shift the day after my diagnosis, and now I could barely walk across the room without collapsing from exhaustion.

I probably only had three days left.

Then, the entire pack erupted in chaos.

The very same day, the pack announced that Kael would be mating with Ella, the heir to the Blackstone Pack, in three days.

The Marking Ceremony would be the largest and most extravagant event our pack had seen in generations.

I told myself he was trying to hurt me. But three days? He had already claimed Ella as his mate and his future Luna.

Though, perhaps it's fitting. I might just have enough strength left to hold on until the Marking Ceremony ends.

I was lying in bed when my mother came in, her face pale.

"Bella," she said softly. "They're here. Kael and Ella. They want to see you."

My heart started pounding. "Tell them I'm not here," I whispered. "I don't want to see them."

"Bella, you know he won't leave until he sees you," my mother said gently. "And... I know you want to see him too. Just for a minute."

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

She was right.

She supported me as I walked slowly down the stairs to the living room. I sat down in the big armchair by the window, and my mother went to the door to let them in.

Kael walked in first, and my breath caught in my throat.

His arm was wrapped around Ella's waist, and she was leaning against him, looking up at him with adoration in her eyes.

She was beautiful, with long black hair and big brown eyes, everything a Luna should be.

Kael's eyes immediately locked onto me, and he stared at me for a long, heavy moment.

I could see the surprise in his eyes when he saw how weak and thin I had become, but it was quickly replaced by coldness.

Ella chattered on happily about their alliance plans, about the amazing preparations for the ceremony, about how excited she was to become Luna.

Kael nodded along, but his eyes never left me.

He was watching every move I made, waiting for me to break down, to show him how much I still loved him.

But I forced myself to smile. I smiled through the pain in my chest, through the tears that were threatening to fall.

Finally, Kael spoke.

"Ella and I are having our Marking Ceremony three days later," he said, pulling an official pack decree out of his pocket and handing it to me. "I want you to officiate it."

I stared at the paper in my hands, my fingers numb.

"You heard me," he said, his voice cold. “Noon sharp tomorrow. Be there to help us rehearse. I won't have any unforeseen issues on the actual day.”

He leaned in slightly, so only I could hear him. "And I want you to stand up there and watch me mark another wolf as my mate. It's what you deserve."

Before I could say anything, he turned to Ella.

"Come on, baby. We have a lot of things to take care of before the ceremony."

And without another glance at me, he walked out the door, Ella trailing happily behind him.

I stared at the decree until my vision blurred.

Officiate his mating. Stand up there and watch he mark another wolf as his mate.

It was the cruelest thing he could have done to me. But I would do it.

Because it was the last thing I could ever do for him.

Kael didn’t go to the Northern Trials. For days, he stayed at my grave beneath the old oak tree. He didn’t eat. He barely moved. The light in his eyes was gone.Alice came first. She stopped behind him, her voice tight with frustration.“Kael, enough. You’ve been here for seven days. The Trials won’t wait. The elders are starting to question your place. Come home.”He didn’t turn around.“Do you hear me?” Her voice sharpened. “You are the future Alpha of Silverclaw! Do you want the entire pack to see you like this?”He stood up slowly and turned to face her. The emptiness in his eyes made her step back. “When she was alive, you hid her from me. Now she’s dead, and you still want me to go somewhere else.”“She betrayed you,” Alice said, forcing her voice steady. “She wasn’t worth this.”“You’re lying.” Kael’s voice exploded like a storm breaking. “You lied from the start! You arranged Liam. You made Ella play along. You knew Bella was dying, and you watched me humiliate her, torture

Kael stood alone in the empty room. His whole body was trembling. But his eyes were clear now. He knew exactly who to find to get the truth. It took him two days to track down Liam in a small abandoned cabin on the far edge of the territory. Liam was packing his meager belongings into a worn leather bag, clearly preparing to disappear forever. He startled when Kael burst through the door, his face going pale with fear. He dropped the bag and stumbled backward."I didn't do anything," Liam said quickly, raising his hands. "It was all arranged by Alice. I just did what I was told. I never touched Bella, I swear on my life."Kael didn't attack him. He stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, his eyes wild. "Tell me the truth," he said. His voice was hoarse and broken. "Is she sick? Is she dying? Please, Liam. I can't find her anywhere. Just tell me what's going on. I'm not going to hurt you. I just need to know the truth."Liam stared at him for a long moment. He saw the desperation

The rooms were dark and still. He searched every room anyway. But there was nothing. Just silence and shadows and the lingering scent of me, already beginning to fade.He ran to the healer's quarters next. He burst through the door so violently that the healer nearly dropped her supplies. "Where is Bella?" he demanded. "She collapsed yesterday. She was sick. Where is she?"The healer shook her head, her face confused and frightened. "I haven't seen her, Kael. No one brought her to me."He didn't wait for her to finish. He sprinted to every small medical hut and healing station he could think of, his desperation growing with each step. None of them had seen me. None of them knew anything. It was as if my mother and I had vanished from the face of the earth. Finally, Kael stopped running. He stood alone in the middle of an empty road, breathing hard, his hands trembling at his sides. Then he pressed his hand against his heart as if it were physically breaking apart inside his chest

Kael turned around. His face twisted with panic when he saw me crumpled on the ground. He lowered his arms immediately, ready to set Ella down and run back to me. Ella grabbed him tighter around the neck. "Kael, don't let her fool you," she said quickly. "You've wanted the Alpha position for years. You can't throw it all away now. She's just putting on an act to ruin tomorrow's ceremony."He hesitated. His jaw clenched so tight she thought it might crack. He had loved me his entire life, and every fiber of his being was screaming at him to run back and gather me up."My ankle hurts so much," Ella whimpered, her voice dripping with false pain. "Please, Kael, take me to the healer. It really hurts. Please."He stood there trapped between us. Then he let out a long, heavy, defeated sigh. He pulled Ella closer against his chest, adjusted his grip on her, and walked away without looking back. My mother carried me home through the dark, sobbing my name over and over again. The pack heale

I collapsed onto the platform as soon as he was out of sight. My whole body was shaking, and I could barely breathe. I had never felt so weak, so tired, so alone. I just wanted to close my eyes and never wake up."Get up."I looked up, and Ella was standing over me, her face twisted with hatred. All the sweetness and innocence was gone. "You think you're so clever, don't you?" she said. "Pretending to be weak and helpless to get Kael's sympathy. Well, it's not going to work. Kael is mine now. He loves me only!"I didn't have the energy to argue with her. I slowly pushed myself up to my feet, and I started walking towards the exit. "Leave me alone, Ella," I said quietly. "I'm not going to fight you for him. He's yours."But she wasn't done. She followed me, yelling at me the whole way. "You think he still loves you? He hates you! He only asked you to officiate the ceremony so he could humiliate you! You're nothing to him! Nothing!"I kept walking, ignoring her. And then, suddenly,

The next morning, my mother begged me not to go. "Bella, you can barely stand! You'll collapse before it's even over! And he's just doing this to hurt you! ""I have to," I said, pulling on my coat. "It's the last thing I'll ever get to do for him. And I need to see him happy. Then I can... then I can let go."My mother tried to argue, but I wouldn't listen. I told her I would be fine, that I would call her if I needed anything, and then I walked out the door. It was a struggle just to get to the pack square where the ceremony would be held, but I made it. It was ten o'clock in the morning, and the square was empty.I stood in the middle of the platform where the ceremony would take place, and I practiced the words I would say. But my mind kept wandering. I thought about all the times Kael and I had stood in this very square, watching other couples complete their Marking Ceremonies. I thought about how we had talked about our own ceremony.I thought about the life we were suppos
