The pack healer's words still echoed in my ears.

"Wolf Soul Degeneration, Bella. There's no cure. You have maybe a week left. Possibly less.”

I had been sitting on the sofa staring at my hands for an hour, wondering how everything had fallen apart so quickly.

The door opened, and Alice, Kael's mother, stepped inside.

"Bella," she said, her voice tight with forced sympathy. "I heard about the diagnosis. I'm so sorry." She sat down across from me.

"Your Marking Ceremony is a month away. If Kael finds out about this, he'll abandon his claim to the Alpha title entirely and never leave your side. You know he would."

I nodded silently. I knew better than anyone how fiercely Kael loved me. If he knew I was dying, he would give up the Alpha title he had worked his entire life for without a second thought.

"The pack needs him, Bella," Alice continued, her voice growing more urgent.

"The Old Alpha's health is failing fast. If Kael doesn't complete the Trials, the title will pass to his cousin Jax. You know Jax is cruel and greedy, and he'd run Silverclaw into the ground..."

She took my cold hand in hers.

"I have a plan. I found a young wolf from a small neighboring pack, someone no one here knows. He'll pretend to be your new suitor. All you have to do is let Kael catch you together. He'll be heartbroken, but he'll leave for the Trials. And no one will ever know the truth. I swear the pack will provide for you until your last breath."

Before I could respond, the front door slammed open, and my mother Elena stormed in.

Her face was red with anger, and her eyes were blazing.

"Get out of my house, Alice!" she shouted. "Don't think I don't see what you're doing! This has nothing to do with the pack and everything to do with that little alliance you've been cooking up with the Blackstones! You've wanted Kael to mate with their heir Ella since they were kids, and now you're using Bella's illness to get what you want!"

Alice stood up, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "Elena, you're being ridiculous. I'm only thinking about what's best for everyone—"

"Best for everyone except my daughter!”

My mother screamed, stepping closer to her. “You're asking her to break her own heart and die alone so your son can have a fancy title! How dare you!"

Alice's face hardened, and she let out a cold, bitter laugh.

“Let’s be honest, Elena. It’s not like Bella is going to last long enough to be his Luna anyway. Why ruin Kael’s life for a handful of days? He needs to finish the marking ceremony before he leaves for the Trials. Only then can he go with a clear head.”

My mother lunged at her, and I jumped up to hold her back.

"Mom, stop!" I cried. "Please, don't."

Alice straightened her blazer, her eyes cold.

"Think about what I said, Bella. The offer stands. I'll give you until tomorrow morning to decide." She turned to leave, but before she could reach the door, I called out to her.

"Wait," I said. "I'll do it. But I have one condition. I want to see Kael one last time before he leaves. I promise I won't tell him anything. I just... I need to see him."

After all, he had been by my side for nearly twenty years.

Alice hesitated for a moment, then nodded.

"Fine. He'll come over tonight to show you the new knife he had made for the Trials. Be ready." And with that, she walked out the door.

My mother turned to me, tears streaming down her face.

"Bella, why? Why are you doing this? You love him! We can fight this! We can go to the other packs, find a healer who knows more—"

I pulled her into a hug, and my own tears finally fell.

"Mom, there's no cure. The healer said so. I have only a week left. I can't let Kael throw away his entire life for me. He was born to be Alpha. It's who he is. I'd rather die knowing he's happy and successful than live long enough to watch him resent me for taking away his dream."

My mother held me tightly, sobbing into my shoulder.

"You're too good for this world, baby. Too good."

Kael didn’t go to the Northern Trials. For days, he stayed at my grave beneath the old oak tree. He didn’t eat. He barely moved. The light in his eyes was gone.Alice came first. She stopped behind him, her voice tight with frustration.“Kael, enough. You’ve been here for seven days. The Trials won’t wait. The elders are starting to question your place. Come home.”He didn’t turn around.“Do you hear me?” Her voice sharpened. “You are the future Alpha of Silverclaw! Do you want the entire pack to see you like this?”He stood up slowly and turned to face her. The emptiness in his eyes made her step back. “When she was alive, you hid her from me. Now she’s dead, and you still want me to go somewhere else.”“She betrayed you,” Alice said, forcing her voice steady. “She wasn’t worth this.”“You’re lying.” Kael’s voice exploded like a storm breaking. “You lied from the start! You arranged Liam. You made Ella play along. You knew Bella was dying, and you watched me humiliate her, torture

Kael stood alone in the empty room. His whole body was trembling. But his eyes were clear now. He knew exactly who to find to get the truth. It took him two days to track down Liam in a small abandoned cabin on the far edge of the territory. Liam was packing his meager belongings into a worn leather bag, clearly preparing to disappear forever. He startled when Kael burst through the door, his face going pale with fear. He dropped the bag and stumbled backward."I didn't do anything," Liam said quickly, raising his hands. "It was all arranged by Alice. I just did what I was told. I never touched Bella, I swear on my life."Kael didn't attack him. He stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, his eyes wild. "Tell me the truth," he said. His voice was hoarse and broken. "Is she sick? Is she dying? Please, Liam. I can't find her anywhere. Just tell me what's going on. I'm not going to hurt you. I just need to know the truth."Liam stared at him for a long moment. He saw the desperation

The rooms were dark and still. He searched every room anyway. But there was nothing. Just silence and shadows and the lingering scent of me, already beginning to fade.He ran to the healer's quarters next. He burst through the door so violently that the healer nearly dropped her supplies. "Where is Bella?" he demanded. "She collapsed yesterday. She was sick. Where is she?"The healer shook her head, her face confused and frightened. "I haven't seen her, Kael. No one brought her to me."He didn't wait for her to finish. He sprinted to every small medical hut and healing station he could think of, his desperation growing with each step. None of them had seen me. None of them knew anything. It was as if my mother and I had vanished from the face of the earth. Finally, Kael stopped running. He stood alone in the middle of an empty road, breathing hard, his hands trembling at his sides. Then he pressed his hand against his heart as if it were physically breaking apart inside his chest

Kael turned around. His face twisted with panic when he saw me crumpled on the ground. He lowered his arms immediately, ready to set Ella down and run back to me. Ella grabbed him tighter around the neck. "Kael, don't let her fool you," she said quickly. "You've wanted the Alpha position for years. You can't throw it all away now. She's just putting on an act to ruin tomorrow's ceremony."He hesitated. His jaw clenched so tight she thought it might crack. He had loved me his entire life, and every fiber of his being was screaming at him to run back and gather me up."My ankle hurts so much," Ella whimpered, her voice dripping with false pain. "Please, Kael, take me to the healer. It really hurts. Please."He stood there trapped between us. Then he let out a long, heavy, defeated sigh. He pulled Ella closer against his chest, adjusted his grip on her, and walked away without looking back. My mother carried me home through the dark, sobbing my name over and over again. The pack heale

I collapsed onto the platform as soon as he was out of sight. My whole body was shaking, and I could barely breathe. I had never felt so weak, so tired, so alone. I just wanted to close my eyes and never wake up."Get up."I looked up, and Ella was standing over me, her face twisted with hatred. All the sweetness and innocence was gone. "You think you're so clever, don't you?" she said. "Pretending to be weak and helpless to get Kael's sympathy. Well, it's not going to work. Kael is mine now. He loves me only!"I didn't have the energy to argue with her. I slowly pushed myself up to my feet, and I started walking towards the exit. "Leave me alone, Ella," I said quietly. "I'm not going to fight you for him. He's yours."But she wasn't done. She followed me, yelling at me the whole way. "You think he still loves you? He hates you! He only asked you to officiate the ceremony so he could humiliate you! You're nothing to him! Nothing!"I kept walking, ignoring her. And then, suddenly,

The next morning, my mother begged me not to go. "Bella, you can barely stand! You'll collapse before it's even over! And he's just doing this to hurt you! ""I have to," I said, pulling on my coat. "It's the last thing I'll ever get to do for him. And I need to see him happy. Then I can... then I can let go."My mother tried to argue, but I wouldn't listen. I told her I would be fine, that I would call her if I needed anything, and then I walked out the door. It was a struggle just to get to the pack square where the ceremony would be held, but I made it. It was ten o'clock in the morning, and the square was empty.I stood in the middle of the platform where the ceremony would take place, and I practiced the words I would say. But my mind kept wandering. I thought about all the times Kael and I had stood in this very square, watching other couples complete their Marking Ceremonies. I thought about how we had talked about our own ceremony.I thought about the life we were suppos
