Blood soaked through the fresh cloth before Ezra finished tightening his belt around Cassian’s ribs.

“Again,” I said.

Ezra pulled the belt another notch. Cassian’s body shifted beneath our hands, but his face showed no response.

That frightened me more than the blood.

Ezra had cut a long strip from the lining of his coat and folded it against the wound. I kept both palms over it while he secured the makeshift bandage, trying to hold pressure without thinking about how little stood between Cassi

  • The Alpha My Sister Wanted   Chapter Eighty-Three: Everyone Saw

We came out of the trees an hour before dawn, and the east gate was already lit. That was the first thing I understood. Nobody burns lamps at that gate at that hour unless the pack house has been awake all night. Two guards came down off the wall before we reached the road. They saw Maren, then Ezra behind her, and I watched the relief arrive on both of them. Then they saw the frame. Then they saw me.One turned and went back through the gate at a run without being told to, and I knew that before we crossed the courtyard, every person inside those walls would know what we were carrying.I had imagined coming back through this gate. I had done it a hundred times in my head since I was eleven years old. In none of those versions was I wearing Cassian's blood to the elbow with Ashvane silver tied against my wrist. They came out of the doorways as we crossed the courtyard, in ones and twos, pulling coats on and then stopping where they stood. The healers took Cassian through the infirmary

By the second bend, Cassian's full weight hung between us.His legs dragged. His head rested against my shoulder, and every few steps his breathing caught in a way I had started counting without meaning to.Ezra had the heavier side. I had the torch, and there was almost nothing left of it.My marked arm kept failing. Twice my hand stopped closing around Cassian's belt, and both times Ezra took the extra weight without comment. We had been underground long enough for dusk to become deep night. Then the air changed.Cold came down the corridor against us, thin and steady, carrying wet soil, pine and the sour smell of leaves rotting under old snow.My wolf pulled hard to the left."There," I said.Ezra stopped. "The passage goes up.""The air doesn't."We lowered Cassian to the floor. The left wall looked like every other stretch of corridor until I put my palm against it and felt the draught coming through a seam behind a curtain of roots.Ezra tore them away in fistfuls. Behind them t

I kept both palms over it while he secured the makeshift bandage, trying to hold pressure without thinking about how little stood between Cassian and the stone beneath him.“He needs a healer.”“He needs us to get him to one.”The answer was practical. Immediate. It gave me something to do besides watch Cassian’s chest rise too slowly. The ledge continued into a steep corridor. It was narrow, dry and almost completely dark beyond the reach of our torch. Before we could move him, the black mark beneath my skin tightened.Pain ran from my palm towards my elbow. My hand slipped from Cassian’s side.Ezra caught my wrist without touching th

“Give me what you took, Aurora.”Victor’s voice crossed the chamber without rising. My body reacted before my mind did.My shoulders drew in. My gaze dropped towards the water. For one sickening moment, I was back in his study, waiting for him to decide whether I had disappointed him enough to deserve punishment. The clasp cut into my palm.I lifted my head.“No.”Victor looked at me as though the answer belonged to someone else.Behind us, water shifted around the Bloodstone wolves. The grey-jawed leader had moved closer to the wall, placing his men where they could reach either Ezra or th

The wall closed behind me.I kept moving. The passage sloped beneath the seal, narrow enough that the stone brushed both shoulders. The pendant and moon disc remained behind me, fixed into the outer wall. I could still feel their pull, stretched from the seal towards whatever waited ahead.A faint silver light marked the path.It did not come from a torch or a carving. It gathered along the edges of the stone, cold and thin, just enough to show where the floor dropped. The black line beneath my skin burned harder with every step. The passage curved once before opening into a small chamber. There was no altar. No ceremonial carving. No

Aurora stepped into the wall.Every instinct I had demanded that I follow. The opening narrowed around her shoulders as she turned sideways, one hand pressed to the clean silver edge. Darkness swallowed her almost immediately. For one second, I could still see the black line beneath the skin of her wrist. Then the stone began to close.I reached for her.Cassian caught my arm."Do not.""She is still there.""And if you disturb the seal, she may stay there."The gap narrowed to the width of my hand.
