Chapter Four: The First Test

Three months passed before Marla decided I was ready to be tested against something more than her own training drills, and when the test came, it arrived exactly the way real danger always does, without warning and without mercy.

We were returning from Ashgrove territory after a meeting with Alpha Corwin, cutting through the northern woods along a path Marla swore was safe, one she had walked a hundred times before without incident. The late afternoon light filtered gold through the trees, and for once my mind wasn't tangled up in grief or memory. I was thinking about nothing more complicated than the ache in my calves and whether Marla would finally let me rest for a full day once we got home.

The attack came from the east, fast and silent, the way only trained wolves move when they don't want to be heard until it's too late.

I smelled them before I saw them, a sharp, unfamiliar scent cutting through the pine and damp earth, and every hair on my body rose at once. Marla stopped walking beside me so abruptly I nearly collided with her back.

"Rogues," she said quietly, her voice dropping into something low and controlled. "At least four. Maybe more."

"Rogues don't usually hunt in packs this deep in claimed territory," I said, my pulse climbing.

"No," Marla agreed grimly. "They don't. Which means someone sent them."

I didn't have time to ask who, because that's when they broke from the treeline, four wolves circling us with the kind of coordinated precision that had nothing to do with random opportunistic hunting and everything to do with a plan. Their fur was matted and scarred in places, the marks of wolves who had survived by violence rather than pack protection, but their eyes were sharp, focused, hungry in a way that made my stomach drop.

"Shift," Marla ordered, already moving into a defensive stance beside me. "Now."

I had shifted dozens of times over the past three months, but never with real fear clawing up my throat, never with four sets of teeth bared and circling closer with every passing second. My body responded before my mind fully caught up, bones cracking and rearranging in a rush of heat and pressure that had become almost familiar by now, though it never stopped hurting entirely.

When I landed on four paws, black fur streaked silver catching what little light broke through the canopy above us, the largest of the rogue wolves lunged straight for my throat.

I dodged on instinct alone, twisting sideways in a way that shouldn't have been possible for someone who'd only been training a few months, and my teeth found his shoulder before he could recover his balance. He yelped, more from surprise than real pain, and scrambled backward to reassess whatever mental picture he'd built of an easy target.

That's when I understood something important. He had expected weakness. They all had. Whatever information had sent these rogues after us, it clearly hadn't accounted for what I'd actually become.

Marla fought beside me with a ferocity that startled me, moving with the kind of brutal efficiency that only comes from decades of survival, taking down one rogue with a single decisive strike to the throat while I circled the remaining three, waiting for an opening.

The second rogue came at me low, aiming for my legs, trying to knock me off balance the way pack trained wolves are taught to disable larger opponents. I felt his teeth graze my hind leg, sharp and burning, and something inside me that had been quiet for three months finally, completely let go.

The heat that flooded through me wasn't like anything I'd felt during training. It wasn't controlled or gradual. It was instant and overwhelming, pouring through every muscle like liquid fire, and when I turned to face him, I felt my own growl vibrate through the ground beneath us in a way that made even Marla pause mid strike to glance at me.

The rogue froze.

Not hesitated. Froze completely, every muscle locked in place, eyes wide with something that looked disturbingly close to primal terror. I didn't understand what was happening until I felt it myself, some invisible pressure radiating outward from my chest, an authority I hadn't known I possessed pressing down on every wolf in that clearing at once.

The remaining three rogues broke and ran without a single one of them landing another hit.

I stood there, chest heaving, watching them disappear into the treeline, and it took several long moments before my body would let me shift back to human form. When I did, I collapsed onto my knees in the dirt, shaking so hard my teeth chattered despite the warm afternoon air.

Marla knelt in front of me, studying my face with an expression I hadn't seen from her before, something between concern and quiet astonishment.

"What was that," I asked, voice barely above a whisper.

"That," she said slowly, "was an Alpha command. A true one. The kind that hasn't existed in these lands in generations, not since your ancestors ruled openly."

"I didn't do anything. I didn't even know what I was doing."

"That's exactly the problem." Marla helped me to my feet, her grip firm despite her age. "Your power is waking up faster than your training can keep pace with it. What happened just now, that unconscious command that froze a trained rogue in his tracks, that is not something young wolves are supposed to be capable of doing by instinct alone. Blackthorn blood doesn't just grant strength, child. It grants dominion."

I thought about that word the entire walk back to the cottage. Dominion. Not simply strength or speed or sharper senses, but authority itself, woven into blood the way ordinary wolves inherited eye color or the shape of their jaw. It should have felt empowering. Instead it terrified me a little, the idea that something inside me could reach out and paralyze another living creature without my permission or full understanding.

"Who sent them," I asked once we were safely back inside, sitting by the fire while Marla cleaned the shallow bite wound on my leg with herbs that stung worse than the actual injury.

"I don't know yet," she admitted. "But I intend to find out."

It took her two days to get an answer, using contacts I didn't fully understand and methods she refused to explain in detail, the kind of quiet, careful networking that comes from someone who has survived in the shadows far longer than I'd been alive. When she finally sat me down with the information, her expression was grimmer than I'd seen it since the night we first met.

"The rogues were hired," she said. "Paid well, from what my contacts could gather, by someone connected to your old pack."

My stomach dropped straight through the floor. "They know I'm alive."

"They suspect," Marla corrected. "Word travels slowly through certain channels, but not slowly enough, apparently. Someone caught wind of a Blackthorn heir moving through northern territories and decided it was worth the risk to eliminate the rumor before it became a confirmed threat."

"Do you think it was Alpha Reyes? Or one of them?" I couldn't bring myself to say their names out loud, not yet, not while the wound of that night still felt fresh enough to ache whenever I let my guard down.

"I don't know," Marla said honestly. "It could be Reyes protecting the current power structure. It could be Camille, ensuring the woman she framed never returns to contradict her lies. It could even be someone entirely separate from your old pack, one of the old bloodlines who conspired against the Blackthorn line generations ago, still watching for any sign that the threat they buried might rise again."

"So I have enemies I don't even know exist yet."

"You have enemies you were always going to have," Marla said, not unkindly. "The moment your bloodline surfaced, that became inevitable. The only question now is whether you face them prepared, or whether you continue pretending you have the luxury of more time to get ready."

I sat with that thought long after Marla had gone to bed that night, staring into the dying fire while my fingers absentmindedly traced the crescent moon pendant resting against my collarbone. Three months ago I had been a woman standing silently in a hall while four men decided my fate without once asking for my side of the story. Tonight, someone feared me enough to send hired rogues into contested territory just to make certain I never got the chance to reclaim what was taken from me.

It should have frightened me more than it did.

Instead, something steady and cold settled into my chest, replacing the last remnants of the girl who used to shrink herself smaller to keep the peace.

They were afraid of me now.

Good.

Let them be afraid, because for the first time since that night in the Great Hall, fear wasn't something being used against me anymore. It was becoming something I could use myself, a weapon sharpened by every betrayal, every humiliation, every quiet moment of doubt I had swallowed just to survive being underestimated my entire life.

I thought about Damien's cold silence, Kade's inability to meet my eyes, Ronan's shaking hands, and Xavier's almost words that never came. Whatever was coming for me next, whoever had sent those rogues into the woods hoping to erase me quietly before I became a real problem, I intended to make certain they understood exactly what mistake they'd made.

I wasn't hiding anymore.

I was done being hunted.

It was time they learned what it felt like to be afraid of the woman they'd thrown away.

  • The Alpha Queen They Once Threw Away   Chapter Twenty-One: The Healer's Trail

The mention of "the healer" in Ronan's grandmother's journal became the focus of nearly everyone's attention over the following two weeks, considering how directly it connected to the very seal that had suppressed my bloodline since birth."If we can find this person, or whatever knowledge they left behind," Marla explained during one particularly intense strategy session, "we may finally understand the exact nature of the magic used against your family, which could prove invaluable if Marrow Hollow's leadership ultimately chooses hostility over reconsideration."Bertram's investigation into old pack records turned up frustratingly little at first, the reference to "the healer" apparently deliberate in its vagueness, likely intended by Ronan's grandmother to protect the person's identity even within her own private journal. The breakthrough came from an unexpected direction entirely. Xavier, still recovering full strength in his injured arm though largely healed by this

  • The Alpha Queen They Once Threw Away   Chapter Twenty: What Ronan Found

Life at Ashgrove settled into something resembling routine over the following weeks, though routine for me now meant balancing governance responsibilities within my reinstated pack, continued training with Marla, and careful monitoring of the fragile, uncertain peace we'd established with Selene through Widow's Ridge. It was Ronan who disrupted that fragile calm, arriving unannounced at Ashgrove territory with an urgency that immediately set everyone on edge, considering how deliberately measured his previous visits had always been."I found something," he said, barely waiting for proper greeting before launching into explanation, "while going through old family records back at my own pack. Something I think connects directly to everything Bertram uncovered about the original conspiracy."We gathered quickly in Marla's cottage, the familiar routine of urgent strategy sessions becoming almost second nature by this point. Ronan spread several documents across the table, hi

  • The Alpha Queen They Once Threw Away   Chapter Nineteen: Widow's Ridge

The journey toward Widow's Ridge took two full days of careful travel, our small escort deliberately modest in size, exactly as Selene's message had specified, though every warrior accompanying us moved with the alert tension of people prepared for betrayal despite our stated intentions toward peace.I rode near the center of our formation, flanked by Marla on one side and Damien on the other, with Xavier and Kade positioned slightly ahead, scouting the terrain for any signs of ambush before we committed to each stretch of unfamiliar territory. Corwin and Farris had insisted on joining personally rather than simply sending warriors, arguing that Selene's willingness to negotiate deserved matching seriousness from our own leadership."You're quiet," Damien observed, during a brief rest stop as the sun began climbing toward its afternoon peak."I keep rehearsing what I want to say," I admitted. "And every version sounds either too rigid or too accommodating, considering wh

  • The Alpha Queen They Once Threw Away   Chapter Eighteen: What the Structure Holds

The wound on Xavier's arm healed within two weeks, though the deeper unease left behind by the failed scouting mission proved considerably more stubborn.Bertram called for an expanded strategy session once Xavier had sufficiently recovered, gathering not just our usual small circle but representatives from all seven allied packs, a clear signal that whatever came next required broader commitment than quiet reconnaissance alone could provide."We know three things with reasonable certainty," Marla began, addressing the assembled group in Ashgrove's largest meeting hall. "Marrow Hollow possesses magical detection capabilities beyond typical pack resources. Their warriors treat some central structure within their territory with genuine fear, not simple caution. And Selene Ashworth herself appears to have anticipated, or at minimum quickly adapted to, our scouting attempt with unsettling composure.""What we don't know," Corwin added, "is what that structure actually contai

  • The Alpha Queen They Once Threw Away   Chapter Seventeen: Into Marrow Hollow

Bertram approved the scouting mission three days later, though not without considerable debate about who exactly should accompany Damien into unfamiliar, potentially dangerous territory."I want to go," I said, the moment the discussion turned toward finalizing the team."Absolutely not," Marla said immediately, her tone leaving no room for negotiation. "You are the Blackthorn heir. If Selene Ashworth or anyone within Marrow Hollow's leadership catches even a glimpse of you on their territory before we understand what defenses they actually possess, you risk everything we've built toward protecting your position.""I've spent months training specifically to handle threats like this," I argued. "Sending others into danger while I remain safely behind feels like exactly the kind of cowardice I promised myself I'd never repeat.""There's a difference between cowardice and strategic patience," Corwin said gently. "A queen who recklessly endangers herself before understan

  • The Alpha Queen They Once Threw Away   Chapter Sixteen: The Daughter of Ashworth

Finding a woman who had spent decades, possibly longer, deliberately erasing herself from every pack registry across the region proved to be exactly as difficult as Bertram warned it would be.We spent nearly three weeks chasing fragments, old rumors, secondhand accounts from elderly pack members who vaguely remembered hearing whispers about Corvin Ashworth's mysterious daughter, though nobody seemed to agree on basic details. Some claimed she'd died young, decades ago, victim of some unnamed illness. Others insisted she'd left pack lands entirely, choosing a life among humans far from wolf politics. A few, the most unsettling accounts, suggested she'd simply vanished one day without explanation, her father refusing to speak of her afterward."Deliberate erasure like this doesn't happen by accident," Marla said one evening, reviewing the scattered, contradictory information we'd gathered with visible frustration. "Someone worked very hard to make certain no consistent record
