Chapter 2

Autor: Liora Z
I followed the motorcade, floating right into the Crestmoon Pack headquarters.

The top-floor ballroom was blindingly bright.

The first thing I saw was a giant projection screen. It showed a picture of us.

In the photo, Jeremy stood tall and superior in his perfect Alpha uniform.

And there I was next to him. In my grease-stained work shirt, looking lost and anxious.

He must have had someone take it secretly. A way to show the whole Alliance his great love experiment.

The former Luna, Jeremy’s mother, stood in front of the screen with a glass of champagne.

“Well, the girl's a hard worker,” she commented idly, like she was inspecting a dog. “To survive a year in a slum… she must have a strong back.”

Veronica sneered.

“Please. She’s a lowly rogue Omega. What has she ever seen of the world?”

She took a sip of her wine, her eyes full of contempt.

“Jeremy is handsome. Even pretending to be broke, he still radiates that top Alpha energy. She was just desperate for him. That's the only reason she didn't leave.”

The nobles around them burst into laughter.

I hung in the air, numbly listening to their ridicule.

Suddenly, Veronica walked over to a group of well-dressed Beta women.

“That Alliance charity gala last month was divine,” one of them complimented. “Those Aurora Roses must have cost a fortune.”

Veronica lifted her chin.

“Of course. They cost me a hundred thousand dollars. The decorations, the champagne… everything was first-class.”

My ghost went rigid.

Three months ago.

Jeremy had stumbled back to our leaky attic, covered in fake blood.

He collapsed on the floor. He told me an enemy pack demanded a hundred thousand dollars, or they'd destroy his wolf.

That night, I knelt on the floor. I held his bleeding head in my lap and cried, promising I’d find a way.

I scraped together every coin.

I sold my blood. I begged my boss, Maria, for a loan.

I worked three jobs a day, sleeping only three hours a night.

When I finally handed him the money, I fainted in his arms from severe anemia.

I thought I had saved my mate.

And now, Veronica was telling me it was for a gala. A fancy party to show off to her friends.

I drifted toward Jeremy.

Veronica nudged him with her elbow.

“Seriously, you froze the pack accounts for this test. Where did you get the money for the gala last month? You didn’t actually use that rogue’s money, did you?”

Jeremy was adjusting his cufflinks. He didn't even look up.

“You have to commit to the role. The assets were frozen. Couldn't risk exposure.”

His voice was casual.

“She was willing to give it anyway. After the test is over, I’ll pay her back a hundred times over. It's just a little money. Think of it as a loan.”

A little money.

I looked at his face. A violent tremor ran through me.

That was my blood. My dignity. Countless nights of crippling pain.

While I was writhing in agony from eating moldy bread, he was using my life to throw a party for another woman.

The main doors suddenly swung open.

An assistant walked onto the stage pushing a safe.

Inside were the keys to a downtown penthouse and piles of priceless jewelry.

In the center lay a shimmering moonstone necklace. The highest symbol of a Luna.

The room fell silent.

Jeremy walked to the microphone. A confident smirk played on his lips.

“Everyone, today is the day I crown my Luna.”

His voice echoed through the hall, filled with absolute control.

“She’s a rogue Omega, but she was willing to die for me. There is no way she will refuse this.”

Thunderous applause.

In the middle of the noise, he took out his phone.

I floated over his shoulder. He was texting my number.

“Change into the dress I sent. Stop sulking. Be here in thirty minutes. You wanted status. I'm giving it to you.”

I stared at the chat history above his text.

The screen was full of green bubbles. All from me.

“My stomach really hurts today. When are you coming home?”

“I left half a piece of bread on the table for you. Don’t forget to eat it.”

“Do your fists still hurt? I bought some cheap ointment.”

He always took forever to reply.

Now that I was dead, he couldn’t stop messaging me.

No response.

Veronica walked over with her drink.

“Still ignoring you?”

“Let her stew. She finds out she’s going to be Luna and suddenly she’s playing hard to get.”

Jeremy frowned. “She’s not like that.”

Veronica laughed.

“Isn’t she? We’ll find out tomorrow. Just because she didn’t leave when you were poor doesn’t mean she won’t change now that you’re rich.”

Jeremy didn’t argue.

I suddenly understood.

This test was never going to end.

Even if I had walked into this building alive, they would have kept judging me.

Watching to see if I was worthy of the necklace. Worthy of his money.

Nothing I did would ever earn their trust. It would only earn me the next test.

The cemetery was small. No marble headstones. Just a simple concrete slab with my name on it.Maria crouched down and put a bouquet of sunflowers in a vase.“The other flowers are too expensive. You don’t need them anyway,” she said, her voice hoarse. “Sunflowers are tough. Like you.”Jeremy knelt motionlessly before the grave.Maria glanced at him, her tone like a razor.“What’s the point of kneeling all day? She can’t hear you.”“I know,” Jeremy’s voice was a ruin. “I’m just afraid to leave.”He knelt from dawn till dusk, never moving.A week after the funeral, he moved back into that leaky attic apartment.I floated in the corner of the room, watching him squeeze onto a crowded subway, pushed and shoved against the poles. He bit into a piece of cold, hard bread. He gagged on the first bite and doubled over a trash can, retching his guts out. That’s how I used to eat every day. He never knew how hard it was to swallow.A month later, he went to a restaurant kitchen and applied for a

“Are you insane?!”Jeremy’s father’s roar echoed through the office. He slammed a stack of papers on the desk, his knuckles white.“You’re stepping down? You signed away the Alpha title? The Alpha of all of Crestmoon?”Jeremy sat in his chair. The dark circles under his eyes made him look like he hadn’t slept in days. He didn’t look up. He just picked up a pen and signed his name.“Damage control,” his father snarled. “The only thing you can do now is cut your losses. Pin all the blame on Veronica! I’ve already spoken to the Coalition Council. If you just apologize now, we can save a third of the pack’s assets!”“Enough,” Jeremy’s voice was quiet, but it had a finality I’d never heard before. “I don’t want that third.”He pushed the documents across the desk. Half his personal assets were to repay the debt Alina thought she had. The other half was to start a foundation to help rogue Omegas and their pups. His father grabbed him by the collar.“Are you stupid? What good will this money

On the day of the cremation, a dozen black cars were parked outside the funeral home. The Crestmoon pack had booked the entire hall.Staff brought in a huge gift box. They opened it. It was full of jewels and a pure white Luna gown, the symbol of the pack’s matriarch.Maria stood at the door. She kicked the box, sending it sliding back.“The she-wolf dies, and now you decide to be generous?” she sneered, her eyes red. “If she’d had just one of these things when she was alive, she wouldn’t have ended up here.”Jeremy knelt beside the box. He hadn’t slept. He clutched the gown, his eyes webbed with blood.“Let me put it on her,” he rasped, his voice barely a whisper. “Please. Just this once. She is the Luna of Crestmoon.”Maria blocked his path like a wall.“She gave her life to refuse you,” she said, her words sharp. “What right do you have to put this on her now? You never even marked her. What kind of Luna is she to you?”Jeremy’s fingers clenched the white silk, his knuckles white. T

The autopsy report was tossed on the table. A single, cold line: Cause of death, organ failure due to high-concentration silver solution. Homicide ruled out.Jeremy stared at the words. Like he could burn a hole through the paper.“Run it again,” he rasped. “She wouldn’t kill herself. There’s been a mistake.”The Coalition’s medical examiner just shook his head and left.I floated behind him. Watching this once-arrogant Alpha cling to his last shred of denial.Maria walked in, carrying a cardboard box. She slammed it down in front of Jeremy.“These are all her belongings,” she said, her voice hard and cold. “See for yourself if it’s worth a hundred bucks.”The box held a few old clothes. A pair of worn-out shoes.Jeremy’s hand sifted through them, then froze. He pulled out a yellowed pawn ticket.“Moonstone pendant, five hundred dollars,” he read aloud. His pupils shrank. It was the only thing my mother left me. A raw stone, blessed by the Moon Goddess herself, or so the stories said.

The paramedics tried to push my gurney into the elevator. Jeremy clung to the edge.“I’m going with her,” he rasped. “She’s afraid of the dark. Always has been.”Maria let out a sharp, cold laugh.“Afraid of the dark?” She stared at Jeremy, her eyes full of hate. “Last night, at your Alpha ceremony, you raised your champagne glass and told the whole pack, ‘She would never turn this down.’ Did you even think about where she was then?”The color drained from Jeremy’s face.He didn’t argue. He just followed the gurney, refusing to fall a single step behind. The morgue’s metal door slowly closed in front of him. Before the metallic clang even faded, Jeremy threw himself against it.“Open the door!” He slammed his fists against the cold steel, his voice a feral roar. With enough werewolf strength to shatter rock. “Open the damn door!”Security guards tried to stop him. He threw them aside. Several grown men crashed to the floor.Veronica finally caught up, out of breath, her sunglasses croo

The body bag unzipped. Jeremy’s shaking fingers brushed my ice-cold skin.He snatched his hand back. Like he’d been burned.“Impossible.” His voice trembled. He spun around, roaring at the paramedics. “What are you waiting for? Help her! Now!”The doctor frowned. “Sir, death has been confirmed…”“I said help her!” Jeremy’s dominant Alpha aura exploded without warning. A guttural growl that sent everyone in the hallway stumbling back.He threw himself over me. His hands pressed against my chest. He squeezed his eyes shut and released his calming Alpha scent—a sharp, frantic smell of fir.It was the one scent an Omega craved above all others. The scent that was supposed to soothe every instinct. Before, just a whiff would make my whole body relax. An Omega’s deep-seated need for a powerful Alpha. Now? Nothing. My body didn’t respond at all.Because he never gave me his mark. The one that made us mates. Without that bond, he couldn’t even feel my life slipping away. The look in his eyes s
