When I opened my eyes again, I was floating.

Down below, I saw the moldy old mattress.

Jeremy was kneeling beside it.

He wore a perfectly tailored black uniform. The crest on his collar gleamed in the dim light. The mark of a top Alpha.

He was gripping my wrist.

“Stop playing dead, Alina.” He frowned. His voice was sharp with impatience.

He thought I was throwing a tantrum.

The silver had temporarily masked the scent of death.

Veronica walked in. She crossed her arms, scanning the cramped room.

“Give it a rest, Jeremy. A little abortion pill isn't going to kill anyone.”

She let out a short, ugly laugh.

“She finds out you're not broke. That you're the strongest Alpha in North America. She's probably just so shocked she fainted.”

Hearing that, the last fake trace of worry vanished from Jeremy’s eyes.

He dropped my cold hand and stood up, smoothing his cuffs.

“You’re right. She’s always been timid.”

Veronica covered her nose in disgust. Her eyes swept over the water stains on the walls, then landed on my rough hands.

“I can’t believe you lasted a year acting in this slum. No heat, even.”

She pointed at Jeremy’s hands. His knuckles were strong and perfect.

They were completely healed now. Full of power.

“You went to those underground fights just to look pathetic. You swallowed silver dust. You suppressed your healing. All to fake a broken wolf.”

Veronica rolled her eyes. “You let your hands get torn to shreds just to make her cry? You’re sick.”

I floated there. Trembling. My spirit shattered.

Swallowing silver dust. Suppressing his healing.

I washed dishes for sixteen hours a day. My hands were blistered, raw, and cracked open.

And every night, I’d come home, hold his bloody fists, and cry as I kissed his wounds.

I thought he was fighting for our future.

It was all a lie. A sick calculation.

“It’s called a trial,” Jeremy said. His tone was arrogant, like an artist admiring his masterpiece.

“Pack bankrupt. Kicked out of the Alliance. Buried in debt. A hopeless situation. And she didn't run.”

He looked at my face, his eyes full of a conqueror’s pride.

“She gave me everything she had. That loyalty… it's worthy of being my Luna.”

Worthy.

The word pierced me like a silver blade.

To pay off his fake debts, I pawned the only thing my mother left me.

I ate one meal a day.

I didn't even dare tell him I was pregnant. I was so afraid I’d be another burden.

And in his eyes, all my pain was just a password. A way to pass his test.

“Stop wasting time. The guests for the Luna ceremony are waiting. You can’t be late,” Veronica urged.

Jeremy reached into his pocket. He pulled out an unlimited black card.

He tossed it.

It landed right on my chest. Right over my un-beating heart.

“When you wake up, take the card. Go to the luxury shop downstairs. Buy something decent. Don't embarrass me.”

He leaned down and pressed a kiss to my forehead.

His lips were warm. My skin was ice.

He didn't notice a thing.

As he turned to leave, Veronica’s shoe kicked something on the floor.

It was the packet of pills I’d emptied.

She kicked it into the trash can.

“Seriously though, wasn't testing her with the pup going a little too far?” Her voice was laced with amusement. “What if she'd actually listened to me and gotten rid of that little burden?”

Jeremy stopped.

His tall frame cast a long shadow in the dim light.

After a short silence, he spoke. His voice was completely casual.

“Then she would have.”

No warmth. No hesitation.

“Alina is always so considerate. She knows I'm doing what's best for her. Later, I’ll give her the best of everything. We’ll have the strongest heirs. She wouldn't hold it against me.”

The door closed.

The engines roared to life, then faded into the distance.

The room was silent again.

I drifted down and stopped right above the bed.

I stared at my own body. The ashen face. The eyes that would never open again.

I looked at the black card on my chest. A symbol of endless wealth.

Suddenly, I laughed.

He was right. I was always so considerate.

I even ended my own life, and our pup’s, just so I wouldn’t hold him back.

But this time, my consideration was absolute.

I wasn't even going to give him the chance to fall to his knees and beg for my forgiveness.

The cemetery was small. No marble headstones. Just a simple concrete slab with my name on it.Maria crouched down and put a bouquet of sunflowers in a vase.“The other flowers are too expensive. You don’t need them anyway,” she said, her voice hoarse. “Sunflowers are tough. Like you.”Jeremy knelt motionlessly before the grave.Maria glanced at him, her tone like a razor.“What’s the point of kneeling all day? She can’t hear you.”“I know,” Jeremy’s voice was a ruin. “I’m just afraid to leave.”He knelt from dawn till dusk, never moving.A week after the funeral, he moved back into that leaky attic apartment.I floated in the corner of the room, watching him squeeze onto a crowded subway, pushed and shoved against the poles. He bit into a piece of cold, hard bread. He gagged on the first bite and doubled over a trash can, retching his guts out. That’s how I used to eat every day. He never knew how hard it was to swallow.A month later, he went to a restaurant kitchen and applied for a

“Are you insane?!”Jeremy’s father’s roar echoed through the office. He slammed a stack of papers on the desk, his knuckles white.“You’re stepping down? You signed away the Alpha title? The Alpha of all of Crestmoon?”Jeremy sat in his chair. The dark circles under his eyes made him look like he hadn’t slept in days. He didn’t look up. He just picked up a pen and signed his name.“Damage control,” his father snarled. “The only thing you can do now is cut your losses. Pin all the blame on Veronica! I’ve already spoken to the Coalition Council. If you just apologize now, we can save a third of the pack’s assets!”“Enough,” Jeremy’s voice was quiet, but it had a finality I’d never heard before. “I don’t want that third.”He pushed the documents across the desk. Half his personal assets were to repay the debt Alina thought she had. The other half was to start a foundation to help rogue Omegas and their pups. His father grabbed him by the collar.“Are you stupid? What good will this money

On the day of the cremation, a dozen black cars were parked outside the funeral home. The Crestmoon pack had booked the entire hall.Staff brought in a huge gift box. They opened it. It was full of jewels and a pure white Luna gown, the symbol of the pack’s matriarch.Maria stood at the door. She kicked the box, sending it sliding back.“The she-wolf dies, and now you decide to be generous?” she sneered, her eyes red. “If she’d had just one of these things when she was alive, she wouldn’t have ended up here.”Jeremy knelt beside the box. He hadn’t slept. He clutched the gown, his eyes webbed with blood.“Let me put it on her,” he rasped, his voice barely a whisper. “Please. Just this once. She is the Luna of Crestmoon.”Maria blocked his path like a wall.“She gave her life to refuse you,” she said, her words sharp. “What right do you have to put this on her now? You never even marked her. What kind of Luna is she to you?”Jeremy’s fingers clenched the white silk, his knuckles white. T

The autopsy report was tossed on the table. A single, cold line: Cause of death, organ failure due to high-concentration silver solution. Homicide ruled out.Jeremy stared at the words. Like he could burn a hole through the paper.“Run it again,” he rasped. “She wouldn’t kill herself. There’s been a mistake.”The Coalition’s medical examiner just shook his head and left.I floated behind him. Watching this once-arrogant Alpha cling to his last shred of denial.Maria walked in, carrying a cardboard box. She slammed it down in front of Jeremy.“These are all her belongings,” she said, her voice hard and cold. “See for yourself if it’s worth a hundred bucks.”The box held a few old clothes. A pair of worn-out shoes.Jeremy’s hand sifted through them, then froze. He pulled out a yellowed pawn ticket.“Moonstone pendant, five hundred dollars,” he read aloud. His pupils shrank. It was the only thing my mother left me. A raw stone, blessed by the Moon Goddess herself, or so the stories said.

The paramedics tried to push my gurney into the elevator. Jeremy clung to the edge.“I’m going with her,” he rasped. “She’s afraid of the dark. Always has been.”Maria let out a sharp, cold laugh.“Afraid of the dark?” She stared at Jeremy, her eyes full of hate. “Last night, at your Alpha ceremony, you raised your champagne glass and told the whole pack, ‘She would never turn this down.’ Did you even think about where she was then?”The color drained from Jeremy’s face.He didn’t argue. He just followed the gurney, refusing to fall a single step behind. The morgue’s metal door slowly closed in front of him. Before the metallic clang even faded, Jeremy threw himself against it.“Open the door!” He slammed his fists against the cold steel, his voice a feral roar. With enough werewolf strength to shatter rock. “Open the damn door!”Security guards tried to stop him. He threw them aside. Several grown men crashed to the floor.Veronica finally caught up, out of breath, her sunglasses croo

The body bag unzipped. Jeremy’s shaking fingers brushed my ice-cold skin.He snatched his hand back. Like he’d been burned.“Impossible.” His voice trembled. He spun around, roaring at the paramedics. “What are you waiting for? Help her! Now!”The doctor frowned. “Sir, death has been confirmed…”“I said help her!” Jeremy’s dominant Alpha aura exploded without warning. A guttural growl that sent everyone in the hallway stumbling back.He threw himself over me. His hands pressed against my chest. He squeezed his eyes shut and released his calming Alpha scent—a sharp, frantic smell of fir.It was the one scent an Omega craved above all others. The scent that was supposed to soothe every instinct. Before, just a whiff would make my whole body relax. An Omega’s deep-seated need for a powerful Alpha. Now? Nothing. My body didn’t respond at all.Because he never gave me his mark. The one that made us mates. Without that bond, he couldn’t even feel my life slipping away. The look in his eyes s
