Zanye POV

He stared up at me as he finished speaking like he was waiting for a reaction. Even though he knew I wouldn’t give him one.

“Is that all?” I asked through the mind link.

He slowly shook his head, clicked his tongue, then abruptly stood.

“We’ve been having a lot of rat infestations lately. You leave out one crumb of bread, and suddenly they’re crawling through the walls. Bold little fuckers,” he spoke.

It was true. We had been dealing with actual rats. But in this context, we both knew he wasn’t talking about the kind that squeaked.

He walked over to the cabinet, grabbed a bottle of whiskey, poured a glass, then traced his finger slowly along the rim before taking a sip. His steps were deliberate as he approached me, stopping just inches away.

“But here’s what they forget…” He suddenly flipped the glass over, letting the whiskey spill across the floor like blood. “…this house has traps older than their worthless lives.”
