The kitchen is very quiet.

He puts his jacket on the hook by the door. He goes to the counter and he fills a glass of water and he drinks some of it and he puts it down and all of this is done with his back to me and all of it takes approximately fifteen seconds and I wait through all fifteen of them.

He turns around.

"It was a business decision," he says.

Something in my chest pulls tight. "Tell me about the business decision."

"The timing wasn't right. I had an ongoing situation here that—"

  • The Alpha Who Saved Me    What Damien looks like when he laughs-b

The drawing takes twenty minutes and it is the right drawing. Immediately, completely, without question. The light comes from ahead of her and falls across her shoulders from the front and makes a shadow behind her that points back into the dark and it is quiet and true and exactly the way transition actually feels — not announced, not dramatic, just the gradual understanding that the dark is behind you now and you are walking in a different quality of light.I look at it."Damien," I say.He looks up.I turn the sketchbook to show him.He looks at it. Something in his face does the quiet open thing. "Yes," he says."You fixed it," I say."You fixed it," he says. "I just repeated what you told me.""That's not a small thing," I say. "Repeating someone's own words back to them in the right order at the right moment is not a small thing."He looks at me. "No," he says. "It's not."We look at each other across the table for a moment that has something warm in it, something that has been

  • The Alpha Who Saved Me    What Damien looks like when he laughs-

It happens on a Tuesday morning over a terrible metaphor. That is the part I will remember most clearly when I think about it afterward — not the laugh itself, not the three seconds of his face being completely different, but the fact that it was caused by something so small and ordinary. Not a grand moment. Not a cinematic setup. Just me, sitting at the kitchen table in yesterday's clothes with ink on my left thumb and a cold cup of tea at my elbow, trying to explain to Damien why the sky in one of my illustrations was the wrong shade of grey."It's too sad," I say.He looks up from his file. "The sky.""This specific grey." I turn the sketchbook to show him. "It's the grey of something that is giving up. I need the grey of something that is deciding."He looks at the illustration. He looks at me. "Those are the same color," he says."They are absolutely not the same color.""Grey is grey.""Grey is—" I stop. I look at him. "Do you actually believe that.""I believe that grey exists

He is watching me laugh. His face is doing something — the almost-smile, yes, but wider than usual, the smile that isn't quite a smile reaching a little further toward actually being one, and his eyes have the quality they get when something has genuinely, quietly pleased him."I like her," he says."Everyone likes Priya," I say, still half laughing. "That's the problem with her being terrifying. She's also completely lovable so you can't even be properly afraid of her.""I'm not afraid of her," he says."No," I say. "I don't think you are." I look at him. "Most people are.""Most people haven't spent fifteen years in situations that required correctly assessing actual threats," he says. "Priya is not a threat. She's a person who loves you and is willing to do whatever it costs her to protect that. Those are two entirely different things."I look at him across the kitchen table in the warm lamp light and I think about a man who sent two sentences to an unlisted email address so my bes

  • The Alpha Who Saved Me    The night Priya almost told-a

Priya almost calls the police on a Friday evening and I don't find out until three days later. When I find out I am sitting at the kitchen table with my sketchbook and my third cup of tea and Damien is across from me with his file and the evening is doing its quiet settled thing and Priya tells me over the phone in the careful voice she uses when she is confessing to something she is not entirely sorry for."I was going to report you missing," she says. "I had the number pulled up. I was sitting on my kitchen floor with my back against the cabinet and my phone in my hand and I had the number pulled up and I was thirty seconds from pressing call."I put my pencil down."Priya—""Don't Priya me," she says. "You had been unreachable for four days. Four days, Mara. You don't go four days without answering me. You once texted me from a dental appointment because you were bored and slightly panicked about the drill. Four days of nothing is not something I was designed to tolerate."I look a

Damien looks at me steadily. "Then you draw it again," he says."And if I get it wrong again.""Again," he says. "Until you get it right." He holds my gaze. "That's how you make things, Mara. That's how it works."I look at him for a moment. At this man who has rebuilt himself and his life methodically and patiently after whatever happened at twenty six, who has tried and failed and tried differently and built something real out of the trying. Telling me with complete certainty that getting it wrong is just a step toward getting it right.I put the pencil to the page.I start drawing.I draw for three hours.Damien makes dinner at some point — I hear it happening peripherally, the sounds of the kitchen being used, something that smells like garlic and something warm — and I surface briefly when he puts a plate beside my sketchbook and then I go back under. He eats at his end of the table and doesn't interrupt once and this is a gift so specific and so perfectly sized for me that I can
