Pain was the first thing I registered when consciousness returned. A sharp, burning sensation in my chest. My eyelids felt heavy, but I forced them open.

I was alive.

The bullet hadn't killed me. Somehow, impossibly, I had survived taking a gunshot meant for Aurora. My mother's bullet.

I tried to sit up, but pain lanced through my chest and forced me back down onto the pillows. My breathing came in shallow gasps as I waited for the agony to subside to a manageable level.

That's when I noticed her.

Mother sat in a chair beside my bed, her posture rigid and perfect despite the obvious exhaustion on her face. Her eyes were red-rimmed, though whether from crying or lack of sleep, I couldn't tell. When she saw I was awake, something flickered across her expression. Relief, maybe. Or anger. Possibly both.

"You're awake," she said, her voice laced with tiredness.

"How long?" I managed to croak out.

"Eighteen hours. The surgeons said it was touch and go for a while. The bullet collapsed your

I was heading back to my room, my mind already on Aurora and what I would say to her next, when Isabella's voice stopped me in the hallway."Arthur, wait."I turned to see her standing in the doorway of her room, still favoring her wounded shoulder but looking stronger than she had earlier."Come spend time with me," she said. "Please. Just for a little while.""Isabella, I really need to check on Aurora.""She'll still be there in an hour." Isabella reached out and took my hand. "I'm your wife, Arthur. Can you just give me one hour? Is that too much to ask?"The guilt hit me hard. She was right. After everything she'd done for me, helping me find Aurora despite being shot, I owed her at least this much."Okay," I said. "One hour."Isabella smiled and pulled me gently into her room.Isabella dragged me into her room, and I stumbled after her, my mind still spinning from her touch. The door slammed shut behind us, sealing us in. When she turned to me, her eyes burned with desire.“Take

I was staring at the wall when I heard the door open. I didn't turn around at first, assuming it was Arthur coming back to deliver another speech about how I needed to accept my situation or trust him or whatever other manipulation he'd cooked up."What do you want from my son?"I turned to see Catherine standing in the doorway. Arthur's mother. The woman who had tried to shoot me at the wedding. "Nothing," I said flatly. "I don't want anything from him except my freedom.""Liar." Catherine stepped further into the room, closing the door behind her with a soft click that somehow sounded ominous. "You want something. Everyone wants something. Money? Status? Power? Or maybe you just enjoy watching him suffer?""I told you. I want nothing from your precious son, infact he is the one that wants something from me.""Then why won't you leave him alone? Why do you keep causing chaos and destruction? Why did you shoot up his wedding and kill members of his pack?"I stood up from the bed, fac

"Alpha," one of them said, his voice carefully neutral. "We have orders that no one is to pass.""Orders from my mother, I assume.""Yes, sir. She was very clear."I pulled the master key from my pocket, the one that opened every lock in the castle. "Step aside."The guards exchanged uncertain glances. "Alpha, with respect, Elder Catherine said specifically that you were not to...""I don't care what my mother said. This is my pack, this is my castle, and that woman behind that door is under my protection. Now move, or I'll move you myself."The threat in my voice must have been clear enough because both guards stepped back, though they looked unhappy about it. I inserted the key into the lock, and to my relief, it turned smoothly. The door swung open with a creak. The cell beyond was small and dark, lit only by a single torch in the corridor. Aurora sat huddled in the corner, her knees pulled up to her chest. Her hair was matted and tangled, her clothes torn and stained. When she lo

I knocked softly on the door before entering. Isabella was propped up in bed, her shoulder heavily bandaged. Her dark hair hung loose around her face, and she looked pale but alert. When she saw me, her expression went blank."Isabella," I said, stepping into the room. "How are you feeling?"She turned her head away, looking out the window instead of at me."Isabella, please. Talk to me."Silence. The steady beep of her heart monitor was the only sound in the room."Why are you giving me the cold shoulder?" I asked, moving closer to her bed. Finally, she turned back to face me. "When Aurora shot me, why didn't you try to save me?"The question hit like a punch to the gut. "What?""You heard me." Her voice was calm, but I could hear the hurt underneath. "When she pulled that trigger and I fell, why didn't you come to me? Why didn't you hold me while I was bleeding on the floor? Or maybe just check if I was still alive before you threw yourself in front of a bullet for her?"I opened my

"Hello, everyone," I said, my words amplified and echoing off the walls. "How about all you motherfuckers just die?"The hall exploded into chaos. Chairs toppled as people scrambled over each other, desperately trying to reach the exits. Women screamed, men shouted orders, and the carefully arranged wedding dissolved into pandemonium.I lifted my gun and fired into the crowd. One shot, then another, the recoil biting into my shoulder as people dropped in every direction. I aimed at a man rushing toward the door and pulled the trigger, then swung to the left where a woman tried to shield herself behind a chair. She fell before she could move. I kept shooting, each target falling as I advanced through the hall. A group tried to push past me and I cut them down without hesitation. The noise of the gunfire filled my ears, sharp and constant, drowning out the screams. I reloaded quickly and fired again, watching bodies collapse across the floor, blood streaking the white cloth of the tabl
