The scent of cheap whiskey and betrayal is what finally woke me.
My head throbbed with a dull, silver-laced ache. I remember Riley Knox—my supposed best friend—toasting to my "last night of freedom" at the pack tavern. I must have shifted too close to my limit because the world was a blur. My mate, Blake Turner, had carried me back to our den in the city, tucking me into the furs of our bed.
I forced my eyes open, my wolf, Kaia, growling low in the back of my mind. She smelled something foul. Across the dimly lit room, two silhouettes were entwined, their shadows dancing against the stone walls in a passionate, frantic rhythm.
"Riley, stop," a voice hissed. It was Blake. "Ava just fell into a deep sleep. The moon-ale hit her hard."
He gripped Riley’s waist, pulling her closer instead of pushing her away.
"Scared she’ll catch us?" Riley purred, her voice grating against my ears like sandpaper. "You’re marking her as your Luna tomorrow. Give yourself to me tonight, Alpha. Let me have what's mine."
"You’re a little troublemaker," Blake murmured, his voice thick with a lust that should have been reserved for me. "Let’s take this to the bathing pool."
"No," Riley whispered, her fingers flying through the buttons of his tunic. "I want to do it right here. I want her to smell us while she dreams of a wedding that isn't happening."
I lay frozen, hot tears stinging my eyes. Three years ago, I was the pride of the Pacific Crown, a lead runway shifter whose grace was unmatched. I had stepped back from the spotlight, handing my contracts and my glory to Riley, all to help Blake build Turner Studios into a powerhouse. I had built his throne, and now he was using it to bed my shadow.
Blake headed toward the ensuite, and Riley lingered. She tiptoed to the edge of the bed, her eyes glowing a faint, mocking amber in the dark.
"I'm not letting that ceremony happen, Ava," she whispered, leaning down so I could smell Blake's scent all over her. "I’m carrying his pup. He belongs to my bloodline now."
The sound of the water running and their muffled moans broke something inside me. I wasn't just a discarded mate; I was a fool.
The next morning, the sun hit the Downtown Civic Registry with a cruel brightness. I stood by my car, clutching my cloak, waiting for the man who promised me a lifetime. I dialed Blake.
"Ava," his voice was clipped, devoid of the warmth he’d used for Riley last night. "Riley was injured during a rehearsal shift. She’s in the infirmary and needs my Alpha aura to stabilize. We’re pushing the bonding ceremony to tomorrow."
"There is no tomorrow, Blake," I whispered to the dead air after I hung up.
I turned to leave, my vision blurred by tears, when the air suddenly changed. The atmosphere grew heavy, charged with a static electricity that made the hair on my arms stand up. A scent hit me—sandalwood, rain, and sheer, unadulterated Alpha power.
A man was walking toward the registry steps. He wore a navy retro suit that looked like it was woven from midnight, a wine-red silk square peeking from his pocket. Every movement was predatory, elegant, and heavy with authority. Even behind dark lenses, his jawline looked like it had been carved from granite.
It was Connor Vale. The High Alpha of the Vale Hills Estate and the shadow-king behind Vale Media Group. He was a recluse, a wolf whose power was whispered about in hushed tones across every territory.
"Alpha Vale," his assistant, Jordan Reed, said nervously while scurrying behind him. "Lady Rose has not arrived. Her pack says she is... indisposed."
"Tell her family that if they cannot respect the timing of a blood-bond, they shouldn't bother showing up at all," Connor replied, his voice a deep, resonant growl.
"But Walter Vale—your father—was adamant. You must take a Luna today to secure the inheritance of the Vale territories. He doesn't care who she is, as long as the papers are signed by noon."
Connor stopped, his aura flaring. "Then pick a name from the registry list. I have thirty minutes."
My heart hammered against my ribs. He needed a Luna to silence his council; I needed a shield to burn my past to the ground. I wiped my face, straightened my spine, and stepped into his path.
"Alpha Vale," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "Your bride is a no-show. My mate is a traitor. Why don't we sign the registry together?"
Jordan Reed gasped, but Connor slowed his pace. He pulled off his sunglasses, revealing eyes the color of liquid ink, swirling with a hidden, ancient fire. He looked me up and down, his wolf scenting mine.
"Get her file," Connor commanded.
Jordan scrambled with a tablet. "Ava Hart. Former lead of the Pacific Crown. Blacklisted by Nova Star Agency three years ago. Currently tied to Turner Studios."
Connor’s lips curved into a ghost of a smirk. "Not anymore. Let’s go."
Thirty minutes later, the ink was dry. I was legally and territorially bound to the most powerful wolf in the hemisphere.
As we sat in the back of his heavy black sedan, the silence was deafening.
"Alpha Vale," I began. "Thank you for the... arrangement. I have two conditions."
He loosened his collar, looking bored but dangerous. "Speak."
"First, keep this private for now. I want to handle my business with Blake Turner without your name tilting the scales. Second, I don't expect a 'true' mating. I won't interfere with your life, and I expect the same."
Connor turned to me, his presence filling the cabin, making my inner wolf stir in a way Blake never had.
"I can grant you a six-month window of secrecy," Connor said, his voice a low rumble. "But after that, I will claim this union publicly. Also, no Luna of mine lives in a separate den. Pack your things. Jordan will bring you to the Vale Hills Estate by sunset."
"Agreed," I said, stepping out of the car.
As I drove away, I saw Connor watching me from the window. I didn't know it yet, but I hadn't just escaped a predator; I had just climbed into the mountain with the King.
The enforcers of the Vale Media Group swiftly hauled Riley Knox away toward the healing dens. Once the chaos subsided, Lisa gripped my arm, her scent frantic. "Why did you break cover? You knew this was a scent-trap set by Sloane; she wanted to tether you so you’d miss the A-List Chats broadcast. Why did you play into her claws?"I looked at Lisa, pulling her into a fierce embrace and stroking her hair to calm her racing heart. "You are the one who is truly foolish. Do you think I would let you endure such humiliation for my sake? Do you think I need you to be my shield while you bleed? You were under a silver threat, yet you didn't howl for me. If the winter had taken you or your grandfather, do you think I could ever run with the pack again?""But look at the carnage now..."I pulled back, squeezing her shoulders with steadying warmth. "Wipe that scent of worry from your fur. Let Jordan escort you to the healers. While you are there, take pleasure in watching Riley realize she has b
The atmosphere backstage didn't just chill; it turned to solid ice.The hunter who had breached the perimeter… was Ava Hart. She was meant to be centered in the spotlight of the A-List Chats den, yet here she was, standing like a vengeful goddess before Sloane’s pet, Riley Knox.I didn’t come alone. Behind me stood Zephaniah and four towering enforcers from the northern territories.Backstage, every lower-ranked wolf went wide-eyed, scenting the shift in the air and covering their muzzles, waiting for the blood to spill.I radiated a frost that could freeze a river; my gaze was as lethal as a silver arrow. I locked onto Riley’s handler with an ancient, icy wrath. The handler recoiled, his scent turning to pure terror. He clutched his bruised face, trying to bark a defense, but his throat had seized shut.Zephaniah moved swiftly to haul Lisa from the dirt. I saw the jagged, red marks of a beast’s strike across her skin.“Ava…”Lisa’s voice was a ragged whimper. She had been terrified t
The evening preceding my interview for A-List Chats, I ventured to the studio to capture a teaser. As I stepped through the heavy oak doors of the facility, a massive gathering of the pack was waiting for me.They offered me wild flora and begged for captured moments together. I dipped my head in a respectful nod and agreed. In this mountain chill, they had stood guard for hours; they had endured enough for my sake.Naturally, the question burning in every wolf's throat was the identity of the 'Shadow Alpha.' I simply offered a knowing smile. "Ensure you tune into the live broadcast of A-List Chats tomorrow night. I promise the howl I give there will satisfy your hunger."The younger females couldn't suppress their yelps of delight. Especially when I lowered my dark lenses to sign their scrolls."You are even more striking when the moon hits your face!" one cried."Your stride is so powerful.""Sister Ava, do not fear... the pack will shield you."I paused mid-scroll. I was momentaril
Lisa felt the phantom grip of a snare tightening around her throat as a thousand dark scenarios clawed through her mind.Upon entering Sloane’s private den, Lisa found her grandfather sharing a table with the Alpha. He was speaking with a gentle smile under the warm glow of the chandeliers, and for a moment, the sight made Lisa’s blood boil like molten silver.“President Pierce… what is the meaning of this hunt?” Lisa’s voice wavered, thin and brittle. At the sound of her voice, Sloane and the elder both turned. Sloane rose with a practiced, welcoming grace. “You have been such a loyal hound to Ava that I felt a reward was in order. You don’t mind that I’ve invited your kin to stay with me, do you?”“Lisa, the President has been more than generous. She’s treated me like an honored elder of the pack. You truly must thank her,” the old man said, his eyes bright with genuine happiness. He was dressed in fine new wools, waving a frail hand at his granddaughter.Lisa glared at Sloane, her
I was the first hunter in the history of the pack to ever snarl back and sever the link on Sloane Pierce. An A-Rank model named Ava Hart.Sloane swallowed her feral rage, her eyes burning like embers as she rerouted her link to Zephaniah. After checking my tracking logs, Zephaniah replied with a voice as steady as a heartbeat: "Since you tossed all of Ava’s previous kills to Riley Knox and Sloane’s pets, Ava has already claimed new territories. Her hunting schedule is saturated. I’m sorry, Alpha, but this trail is no longer yours to walk."Of course, it wasn't our failure.Sloane had only her own arrogance to blame. She never anticipated that I would become the most coveted hunter in the territory because of the Love More footage. And she certainly didn't expect the elders and the brands to refuse any other substitute.Losing a few tithes of compensation wasn't a mortal wound. But……as the Alpha of H World with absolute dominion, how could she let a single female model mock her author
The promotion for Love More didn't just catch fire; it became a wildfire. It wasn't just the digital clips; the physical banners were surfacing in every trading hub and social square of the territory. Beyond drawing in scores of mating pairs looking for ritual rings, crowds began to swarm the brand’s alcoves just to howl questions about the "Shadow Alpha."Who was this male? What was his lineage? Even a single scent-trail of information would have satisfied their hunger. The staff at the counters were caught between panic and amusement. They kept repeating that they were seeing his back for the first time themselves; even the high-ranking corporate wolves had no clue who had stood beside me.Rumors began to drift through the forest that during the hunt, the clearing had been guarded by Elites. Aside from the Director and a few Inner Circle members, the man’s identity was a ghost.Meanwhile, my own presence began to radiate across the territories. My unique spirit was impossible to ign
"International Alpha-Queen," I whispered the title to myself. It was a dream I had long ago buried under the weight of Blake’s ambition. Now, I didn't care about the glory; I only cared about the hunt. I wanted to smell the fear on Riley and Blake when their gilded world finally collapsed.Just bef
I pressed my lips against Connor’s ear, the heat in my veins turning into a literal fever. My inner wolf was pacing, restless and demanding. I leaned in, my voice a jagged whisper, "I want you."I could feel his heart hammering against his ribs, a wild, rhythmic drum. He pulled back for a fleeting
"I’m not afraid because I’ve shed the skin of the Ava who let others muzzle her. Besides," I added, my voice dropping to a low hum that only a mate could hear, "I have you guarding my flank now."Confidence radiated from me, a sharp contrast to the broken wolf I had been weeks ago. Connor’s golden
The sun hadn’t yet crested the jagged peaks of the valley when I walked into the Turner Studios strategy den. The air was thick with the scent of old coffee and fresh betrayal. Blake sat at the head of the heavy oak table, his eyes darting between Riley and me. Though the seats were the same, the h
