The shift in my life felt as jagged as a wolf’s tooth. I couldn't believe the audacity pulsing through my veins; I had actually bound my soul to a high-ranking stranger. But the blood-oath was struck, and looking back was a luxury I couldn't afford. I climbed back into my sleek black SUV, but before I could ignite the engine to leave the Downtown Civic Registry, my phone howled. It was Blake.

"Ava, where are you lurking?"

"Just outside the Registry. I'm heading back to the den," I replied, my voice as cool as a winter moon.

"Change of plans. Riley has a critical showcase for the pack elders, and I need you to phase in for her immediately. I’ll have the stylists provide a silver masquerade mask. Under the stage lights, no one will distinguish your scent or your face from hers," he commanded. He wasn't speaking as my intended mate; he was barking orders like an Alpha to a subordinate.

"Since Riley is 'incapacitated,' you have to shoulder this burden for the pride of the studio."

"I thought you said Riley was wounded during a transformation?" I countered, testing the depth of his lies. "If her spirit is that damaged, the territory gossips should already be howling about it."

He was utterly devoid of shame. In the past, I would have played the martyr, dulling my own shine to let Riley bask in the glow of the Turner Studios spotlight. Not today. "Fine," I said, a predatory smile tugging at my lips. "Send me the coordinates. I’ll be there."

"Is this for my career or a boost for the studio?" I added, the double meaning lost on him. "I'll give her a boost she'll never forget."

I severed the link. Blake was likely tucked away in a private ward, hovering over Riley like a devoted sentinel while they plotted my obsolescence. I immediately dialed my true ally, Lisa.

"Blake wants you to stand in for that Omega-level fraud?" Lisa snarled through the speaker. "If you hadn't stepped into the shadows to help him, she wouldn't even be fit to scout the perimeter, let alone lead a showcase!"

"Lisa, I’ve already signaled my 'submission' to the idea," I told her firmly.

"You're going to let them bleed you dry again?"

"Hardly. I’m done being the ghost in her machine. I have a new strategy, and I need the only person I trust to execute the flank. Riley is desperate to convince the High Council she’s lead-wolf material for the upcoming Pacific Crown Gala honors. She’s hiding her pregnancy to keep her rank. I need you to scent out the medical records at the pack infirmary. I want proof that she’s carrying Blake's pup, and I want the archives of every time I’ve secretly filled in for her."

Lisa went silent, then let out a low, dangerous hum of approval. "Those two mangy curs. They’ve been using you as a puppet for too long. Consider it done, Ava."

I drove toward the Brooklyn Pack Center, feeling an eerie, cold calm. I was going to hunt them with the same ruthlessness they used on me. At the venue, I was met by Riley’s handler, Gary—a thick-necked enforcer with a mind like a rusted trap.

"You’re late! Get to the vanity before the elders arrive," Gary grunted, shoving me toward a dressing room. "What's the nature of this ritual?" I asked, playing the part of the obedient shadow.

"Just a standard exhibition," he lied.

I already knew better. This wasn't just a show; it was the sacred jewelry unveiling for the legendary French house, Bel AME. If this went well, Riley would be named the face of their global empire. She was stealing my legacy while I wore her mask.

"Riley has a private sanctum here. Use it," Gary ordered. "You’re the finale. You descend from the rafters as the Lunar Queen." He gestured to a gown of shimmering white silk, tight enough to show every curve of a hunter. The mask was a masterpiece of gold filigree, designed to shroud my identity in mystery.

As I stood before the mirror, my hair pinned back with a single white moon-rose, I looked lethal. Even Gary looked stunned. "If you stay silent," he muttered, "they'll think you're a goddess. Riley will secure the contract for sure."

He pulled out the centerpiece: the Crown Star bracelet. It was a heavy gold band encrusted with diamonds, symbolizing a pup protected by its Alpha and Luna. But as he snapped it onto my wrist, it slid down toward my palm. I was leaner, more toned than Riley’s soft frame.

"It’s too loose!" Gary hissed, frantic. "The elders will see it slip. It’ll ruin the symbiosis!"

"Do you trust me?" I asked, my eyes flashing behind the gold mask. "We have no time for a blacksmith."

"Then do whatever you have to," he relented, missing the predatory glint in my gaze.

What Gary didn't know was that I wasn't the only one watching. Across the city, Jordan Reed had been tracking my scent. When he reported my "substitution" to the Vale Hills Estate, Connor Vale didn't growl in anger. Instead, he adjusted his cuffs, his dark eyes fixed on the city skyline.

"A jewelry showcase at the Pack Center?" Connor mused, a dangerous edge to his voice. "Secure me a seat in the shadows. I want to see exactly what kind of wolf I’ve just tethered to my soul."

"The time isn't right, Connor," I said, my voice steady despite the electricity hum between us. I took the device from him, placing it on the table between us and hitting the speaker."Ava? Where the hell are you?" Blake’s voice barked through the line, sharp and demanding."I had to go to ground, Blake. The reporters were scenting blood after the showcase," I replied, my tone flat, masking the disgust that curdled in my gut."Then you haven't heard what Lisa did?" He sounded like he was pacing a cage. "She’s thrown the pack into a frenzy. Turner Studios is under siege by the High Council. I need you back at the den immediately to prepare for a public address. You’re going to clear the Studio’s name and swear this was all a misunderstanding."A public address, I thought bitterly. Another sacrificial altar where he expects me to lay down my neck."Fine," I said, playing the role of the submissive mate one last time. "I’m on my way."I cut the link. Connor was watching me, his dark eyes

"Ava, be straight with me," Lisa’s voice crackled through the link. "Is another Great House backing us? This path cleared too easily.""I have an ally in the shadows," I replied, glancing at the silent, powerful man steering the car. "I can't reveal his mark just yet. But the thought of Blake’s face as his empire cracks is enough to keep my wolf fed for a month."Lisa assumed my birth pack had finally stepped in. She had no inkling that I was now the Luna of the Vale Hills Estate, bound to the most feared wolf in the territories."Are you planning to use this momentum to break your blood-oath with Turner Studios?" Connor asked later that evening. We were seated in a secluded alcove of a high-altitude lodge, the city lights twinkling below like distant embers."No," I said, tearing a piece of rustic bread with a sharp smile. "That would be too merciful. I’m going to dismantle them from the inside. I’m reclaiming my place on the Pacific Crown runways, and I’ll use Blake’s own resources

The media packs were in a fever dream. What did the Alpha of the Vale mean? Was he truly marking Ava Hart as a protected wolf of the Vale Media Group? To the journalists, it was no longer a joke. Seeing Connor's shadow over me, the reporters pivoted like scared pups, turning their fangs toward Turner Studios instead. The fallout was instantaneous. Blake’s enforcers were already scrambling to find a scapegoat, starting with Riley’s personal handler. I watched the chaos from a distance, my inner wolf as still as a frozen lake. I stripped off the silk gown, donned my leather gear, and slipped out the side exit of the arena.Waiting for me was Connor’s sleek, midnight-black transport."Get in," he commanded, his voice vibrating through the glass. I slid into the leather interior, the scent of expensive cedar and rain washing over me. "Thank you for the intervention today," I whispered.Connor’s eyes narrowed, a wolfish smirk dancing on his lips. "Did you honestly think I’d allow common cu

I felt the corners of my mouth lift in a secret, predatory curve. I lowered the hem of my silk gown, moving with a silent, feline grace toward the shadows of the rafters. The gold filigree mask pressed against my skin, hiding the face of the woman Blake Turner thought he had broken. He had forgotten one thing: three years ago, before I retreated into his shadow, the Pacific Crown Gala whispered my name in awe. My scent and my stride were legendary among the high-ranking packs.Just as the audience of elders and pack leaders reached the peak of their boredom, I descended. I didn't just sit on that chair; I reclaimed a throne. As I was lowered into the glare of the silver spotlights, a collective gasp rippled through the hall. The Crown Star—the sacred jewelry meant to be the climax—was nowhere to be seen.Panic erupted backstage. I could scent Gary’s sweat from fifty feet away. Stylists and enforcers scrambled, eyes darting, thinking the treasure was lost. They even rushed the stage, f

The scent of cheap whiskey and betrayal is what finally woke me.My head throbbed with a dull, silver-laced ache. I remember Riley Knox—my supposed best friend—toasting to my "last night of freedom" at the pack tavern. I must have shifted too close to my limit because the world was a blur. My mate, Blake Turner, had carried me back to our den in the city, tucking me into the furs of our bed.I forced my eyes open, my wolf, Kaia, growling low in the back of my mind. She smelled something foul. Across the dimly lit room, two silhouettes were entwined, their shadows dancing against the stone walls in a passionate, frantic rhythm."Riley, stop," a voice hissed. It was Blake. "Ava just fell into a deep sleep. The moon-ale hit her hard."He gripped Riley’s waist, pulling her closer instead of pushing her away."Scared she’ll catch us?" Riley purred, her voice grating against my ears like sandpaper. "You’re marking her as your Luna tomorrow. Give yourself to me tonight, Alpha. Let me have wh
