Dominic’s eyes snapped open. They weren't hazy or weak anymore; they burned with the cold, silver fire of a sovereign. He sat up slowly, his muscles protesting, but his will overriding the pain.

"Regnar," Dominic rasped, his voice returning to its authoritative baritone. "Report."

"The explosion was a targeted strike, Sire. Kaelen has seized temporary control of the Council, claiming you are missing or dead. We suspect he is working with a third party to destabilize the Human-Beastkin treaty, but he has covered his tracks well. We are gathering evidence, but it is slow."

Dominic’s jaw tightened. "Keep my survival a secret. If Kaelen knows I am alive, he will send an army to this sector. I will stay here until my strength is fully returned." He looked toward the door Rhea had exited. "Stay close to the sanctuary. Protect her, Rhea and her friends. They are under my personal protection now."

"We have already moved, Sire," Regnar said. "She has gone to look for food and wine. I have already ordered my men to 'prepare' a cache for them to find. It will appear as if they stumbled upon a hidden treasure, but it is our way of paying for your hospitality."

"Good," Dominic said, his eyes darkening. "And Regnar... stay in the shadows. I am investigating something here. Something about the girl."

Regnar bowed and vanished, his men following like smoke. Dominic lay back down, his mind racing. But as he drifted toward a light sleep, he heard the door bolt slide back.

Hours later, the basement was flooded with noise. Tess and Leo practically fell through the door, lugging bags that were overflowing.

"I don't believe it! I actually don't believe it!" Tess was shouting, her face flushed with excitement. "It was right there! Behind a false wall in the old deli. Bottles of pre-collapse wine, canned hams, and real chocolate!

"It was too easy," Leo added, though he was grinning broadly. "It was as if the ruins were handing us gifts. Is the Ghost King suddenly being nice? Does he have his 'Men in Black' going door to door now?"

Tess laughed, throwing a bottle of wine onto the table. " I mean, look at this! Why do the High Towers only give us those measly supplies once a month? If the leaders in the Citadel actually cared about the Fringe, we’d have this every day. He’s probably sitting on a throne of steak while we fight over crumbs."

Cough.

A loud, violent cough erupted from the cot.

The trio froze and ran to Dominic’s side. He was sitting up, his face flushed not with fever, but with a cold, terrifying fury.

Once a month? Dominic’s thoughts were a storm of rage. He had signed the "Daily Provision Act" two years ago. He had ordered that every sector in the Fringe be stocked with fresh water and protein daily. If the people were only seeing supplies once a month, it meant the Council the "loyal" ministers were stealing from the mouths of the hungry.

"Are you okay?" Rhea asked, her hand pressing against his forehead. "You look... angry."

Dominic looked at her, his silver eyes softening just enough to hide his power. "I... I'm fine," he managed to rasp, though his voice was tight.

"Look at all this, Tess said, oblivious to the internal war he was fighting. She held up a vintage bottle of Bordeaux. "The Ghost King might be a stingy myth, but today, we eat like we're the ones wearing the crowns!"

Dominic watched them cheer, his heart heavy. He looked at Rhea, who was trying to smile for her friends despite the hollow look in her eyes.

They think I am a ghost who has forgotten them, Dominic thought, his fingers curling into the sheets. But by the time I am through with Kaelen and the Council, they will know exactly what a King’s mercy looks like.

The basement of the industrial bakery had been a cold, airless tomb for days, but tonight, it felt like the beating heart of a forgotten world. The air was thick and heavy, saturated with the rich, savory scent of roasted ham and the sweet, fermented tang of the vintage wine Regnar’s "ghosts" had planted in their path.

Rhea moved through the dim space with a flickering candle in her hand, her movements steady despite the hollow ache in her chest. She stopped by the cot to check the stranger’s vitals, her medical instincts overriding her grief. As she peeled back the corner of the sterile bandage on his chest, her breath hitched.

The jagged, purple bruising that had mapped his torso just forty-eight hours ago had faded to a faint, dull yellow. The deep lacerations wounds that should have taken weeks to knit were closing with a terrifying, beautiful speed.

"You’re a fast healer," she whispered, her fingers grazing the heated skin of his shoulder. "Almost too fast."

Dominic looked up at her, his silver eyes catching the amber light of the candle, reflecting a depth of intelligence that made her pulse jump. "I’ve always been... resilient," he rasped. His voice had lost its shattered edge, returning to a deep, resonant baritone that seemed to vibrate in the very floorboards beneath her feet.

"We’re having a party," Rhea said, a small, tentative smile finally breaking through the mask of the weary doctor. "Marcus took the truck and the pride, but he didn't take our spirit. If you feel up to it, you should join us.

The heavy bronze gates of the Sovereign’s tier closed behind the kitchen maids with a deep, final thud. Inside the royal wing, the chaotic clatter of the grand kitchens vanished completely, replaced by a profound, suffocating quiet. The air here was pristine and cool, carrying the faint scent of the mountain's ancient cedar wood and the lingering warmth of the hearth fires.Mia walked third in the tight line of four kitchen maids. Her head remained bowed, her chin nearly touching the collar of her coarse linen apron, while the white cloth tied around her hair hid the frantic darting of her eyes. The silver water pitcher in her hands felt impossibly heavy, its polished surface reflecting the trembling of her fingers. Every step she took across the pristine white marble floorboards felt like a step across a thin sheet of winter ice.The head maid, a severe woman named Martha who had served the true Alpha line since before the great collapse, led them with a brisk, no-nonsense pace. "Keep

The golden, ambient peace of the ancestral greenhouse slowly faded behind them as the heavy copper doors slid shut with a soft, airtight hiss. The transition back into the wide, marble-lined corridors of the Sovereign's residential wing felt sudden, the rich scent of blooming jasmine and sweet citrus was replaced once more by the sterile, cool air of the upper palace. Tess and Leo walked ahead, their steps light but noticeably slower, their bodies finally succumbing to the deep, liquid exhaustion of a full day spent traversing the wonders of the mountain.Dominic walked with his usual steady, unhurried strides, his massive arm still anchored firmly around Rhea’s waist. He felt the subtle weight of her leaning against him, her amber eyes reflecting a peaceful contentment he hadn't seen since the heavy divisions had first breached the lower sector perimeter."They will sleep well tonight," Rhea murmured, her voice a gentle thread in the quiet corridor as she looked ahead at Leo, who was

Rhea smiled warmly, taking a small slice from Dominic’s outstretched palm. She chewed slowly, her amber eyes looking around the lush canopy with a profound, quiet emotion. As a doctor who had spent years watching children wither away from vitamin deficiencies and chemical poisoning in the lower clinics, seeing an abundance of pure, untainted life growing inside these walls brought a tear to her eye."How do you maintain all of this without the natural rain, Dominic?" Rhea asked softly, her hand sliding into his massive palm as they resumed their walk down the winding garden path."The mountain provides everything," Dominic explained, his long, heavy strides perfectly synchronized with her careful pace. His dark military coat brushed against the green ferns as he walked. "The thermal heat from the volcanic core creates a natural evaporation cycle. We channel the pure, melted snow from the upper peak through silver filtration pipes, creating an artificial water grid that mimics the old-

They were standing above the clouds. A vast, rolling sea of thick white mist stretched out as far as the eye could see, obscuring the ruined, desolate wasteland of the lower world. The bright, unfiltered rays of the sun beat down on the terrace, warming the cold metal beneath their boots and turning the tops of the clouds into a blinding, golden ocean."We are... we are higher than the birds," Tess murmured, her usual stoic expression completely melting away into pure, childlike wonder. She walked slowly toward the heavy iron railing, her hands gripping the cold metal as she stared out at the infinite horizon. "I didn't think the world was this big. From the bakery window, the world just looked like a series of iron walls and gray roofs."Dominic stepped up beside her, his massive frame blocking the sharpest gusts of the mountain wind. He looked out over the expanse of his kingdom, his silver eyes reflecting the brilliant light of the midday sun."The mountain acts as a natural shield

Dominic looked at Rhea, and Rhea smiled. The sharp, predatory tension that usually defined the towering Alpha’s posture seemed to dissolve entirely under the warmth of her gaze. He kept his massive arm wrapped loosely around her waist, anchoring her against his side as if her very presence was the only thing keeping his wild, territorial core from flaring into a defensive fire. After months of surviving in the gray, toxic mud of the lower sectors, seeing her standing under the polished mahogany arches of the palace, completely healed and vibrant, felt like an impossible victory.Tess shifted on the edge of the plush velvet quilts, her sharp, perceptive eyes moving from the intricate gold-leaf detailing on the stone pillars to the massive glass balconies that overlooked the upper city. She swallowed a mouthful of the sweet berry juice the servants had left, her fingers tapping a restless rhythm against her knees."Can we go out and see the Citadel later?" Tess asked, her voice carrying

Dominic went back to meet in his chambers, his mind still heavy with the dark revelations from the subterranean isolation block. The metallic clinking of Marcus’s shackles and the cold reality of Vance’s calculated murder echoed in his ears with every long, hurried stride he took through the grand marble corridors. He had left the lower sectors heavily fortified under Regnar’s watch, but the closer he got to the Sovereign’s tier, the more a strange, instinctual tightness gripped his chest core.He pushed open the massive, twelve-foot carved oak doors of his private suite, expecting to find the comforting warmth of the cedar fire and the gentle, amber-eyed presence that always anchored his wild, predatory energy.Only to meet the room empty.Dominic froze on the threshold, his silver eyes flashing brilliantly as they instantly scanned the vast space. The heavy velvet quilts on the mahogany bed were neatly arranged, untouched since he had left. The silver water basin sat still on the va

The preparation was a frantic, joyful blur. Tess and Leo had pushed the heavy industrial equipment aside to set up a small round table, draped in a surprisingly clean white sheet. They kept the music low, a soft, soulful jazz melody playing from a battery-operated deck, a sound just large enough to

Rhea? What is it?" Tess asked, her voice tight as she hovered behind her, a rusted pipe gripped in her shaking hands. There, sitting directly in front of the door, was a heavy, unmarked wooden crate. It hadn't been there last night. It was tucked neatly against the soot-stained wall, looking as if

Rhea stood over the medical cot, a basin of lukewarm water and a tattered cloth in her hands. The generator hummed a low, dying song in the background, casting long, flickering shadows against the concrete walls. Her heart felt like a hollowed-out shell, the space where Marcus and Mia had lived now

The roar of the truck’s engine tore a hole through the silence of the industrial bakery, leaving a vacuum that smelled of exhaust and abandonment. Rhea didn’t move, her hands were still curled into fists, knuckles white, as if she were still trying to hold onto the ghosts of the life Marcus had ju
