Aria stepped into the corridor. The conversations from the Elites’ room behind her still echoed in her ears. She hadn’t expected their validation, but the arguments? That had her on her toes.

Footsteps ahead of her.

Kael stood near a pillar, arms folded, staring into the dark hallway.

Aria slowed her steps.

“You’re not running this time,” he said without turning.

“I didn’t say anything worth running from.”

He looked back. “You didn’t say anything easy to hear either.”

She stepped closer. “Someone had to say it.”

Kael exhaled. “You made some of them nervous.”

“And you?”

“I’m used to being nervous,” he muttered. “It comes with leadership.”

Aria leaned against the wall. “You sent for the Elites. You knew something was wrong before I said a word.”

“I knew the rogues weren’t acting like rogues. You just gave it a name.”

She looked at him. “Then listen when I say it won’t stop unless we change something.”

“Change?” he repeated. “You’re suggesting we kneel?”

“I’m suggesting we talk.”

Aria didn’t remove her hand from his. Not when they left his chambers. Not when they walked through the corridors. His grip wasn’t desperate—just firm, certain. They turned toward the west wing towards the Shadow training hall. As they reached the gates, the two guards straightened at attention.“Summon the elite,” Kael ordered. “All of them. To the Elites’ Hall. Now.”The guards didn’t hesitate. They ran off quickly. Then Kael and Aria walked to the Elites’s hall. Kael held her hands till they got to the door, then he let go. Lucan was already inside when they entered. He leaned against a pillar, his arms crossed.“Well, look who didn’t die,” he said, a small grin tugging at his lips.Aria rolled her eyes. “Nice to see you too, Lucan.”He chuckled. One by one, the other Shadow Warriors began to arrive. Laura first, her hair tied back and sweat dripping from her body. They were called out mid-training. Then General Thorne and Beta Darian. Then Selene.Selene was the last to enter,

Lucan shifted back to his human from as he approached the gates. “She’s…” Lucan started. Kael’s eyes narrowed. Then another wolf crawled out. Brown fur. Grey eyes. “Lyra!” Kael yelled, his voice laced with excitement. Aria shifted back to her human form. “Why did you do that?” Kael asked Lucan. “Do what?” “Act like she didn’t make it.”“I didn’t do anything of such,” Lucan started. “We raced back. And I finished first. Thats all,” he said. Then he walked in. Kael stood still, watching Lyra walk towards him. Then he noticed the blood on her face. He steps moved towards her. “Alpha,” she called, bowing slightly. Kael paused right in front of her. His hands reached for her face but paused mid-air. “Did they hurt you?” he asked, his voice firm. “No,” Aria said, cleaning her face with her sleeves. “It’s just rogue threat.”“Come with me,” he said, pulling her with him as he went. Aria laughed softly as Kael pulled her. They walked swiftly through the hallways them straigh

The other members of the Elites turned and walked back into the pack walls. Kael walked fast through the hallways, his cape sweeping the dust as he went. Beta Darian tried to catch up. “Alpha,” he called. “Not now,” Kael replied, his voice sharp. Beta Darian retreated without a word. Kael rushed to his chamber. He walked in swiftly and shut the door behind him. He removed his cloak and flinched it on his bed. He ran a hand through his hair, his jaw tightened as he turned and began to pace the room, his boots echoing against the stone floor.“What did I just do?” He had let her walk out and into the camp of the enemy with nothing but a scroll. No defense. No backup. No guarantee. Just... trust. He hated it.Not because he didn’t believe in her, or because he didn’t trust her. But…“What if she doesn’t return?” He sucked his teeth and kicked the base of the table. The wood creaked slightly. Kael rested his palms against the edge of the desk and leaned in, his head bowed. “If sh

Aria let out a deep breath as she stepped outside the room. She walked down the corridor slowly, her boots barely making a sound on the stony floor. Her heart pounded with fear and Elites’ tension. Her thoughts overlapped in her mind. “Maybe it’s actually suicide.”“Is this pack worth risking my life for?”“Why am I doing this for a pack I came to destroy?” “Trust, Aria. To gain trust. The closer you get, the easier the mission.” “What if I die in the process?”“What if I don’t make it back?”Just then she caught a shadow. It moved hurriedly, almost sneaking. “Hey,” Aria called. A figure paused far in front of her. A man in a black hood. Then, he hurried off immediately. Aria went after him, but she couldn’t meet up. She exhaled sharply. “This pack is full of mysteries,” she said, turning towards the southern wing. She reached her room door and entered quietly. Her roommates were already fast asleep. Aria dropped her cloak on a chair, then she sat at the side of her bed. Mir

  • The Alpha’s Bane    The Parchment.

The corridor was quiet, dimly lit by the torches on the walls. The air was thick with tension and unspoken words. Aria kept her pace steady beside Kael, her eyes forward, though she felt his eyes on her now and then. When they turned the corner leading to his chamber, she slowed down—almost paused. The last time she was here, she was brought in involuntarily. But now the case was different. She stood healthy, and yet she was walking into that same room. Kael stopped too and turned slightly. His voice was soft, lower than usual.“You’re free to leave anytime, Lyra. But I promise I won’t keep you longer than necessary.”Her eyes met his. Those same stormy, dark and calm eyes. His voice was laced with deep concern. She gave a small nod. “Let’s get this over with.”He opened the door and stepped aside for her to enter. She walked in quietly. It was tidy. Typical Kael. The desk was clean and cleared, only parchment and ink remained. Kael joined her, closing the door behind him. No guard

Silence lingered even after Lucan shut the door behind him. The tension between Selene and Laura hung thick in the air. Selene sat across Laura, her leg hung on the table. While Laura crossed her arms and leaned fully into her chair. Outside the hall, Kael’s boots thumped loudly against the stony floor. Aria followed behind, matching his pace. They reached the edge of the southern wing, and stood on the balcony. Aria didn’t stop until she stood at the railing, her fingers gripping the cold iron slightly. Kael paused beside her. “Now,” he said. “What’s this plan of yours?”She turned slowly. “It’s not a typical plan,” she replied. “I assumed that,” Kael said dryly. “Go on.”She faced him fully, her cheeks flushed from the confrontation. “Let me deliver a message to the rogues.”Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly. “You want to what?”“I’ll go alone,” she added, quickly, her voice firm. “Under the guise of a truce offer. One wolf. That won’t pose a threat.”“That’s not a mission. That’s a
