I couldn't bring myself to lie to her. Nerina had always been like a little sister to me even though circumstances had pulled us apart for years.

So even now, as she sat across from me with Kian in her arms and eyes that searched mine for answers she already suspected to be true, I couldn't tell her otherwise.

That's why I found myself slowly nodding.

The smile on Nerina’s face was instant, her eyes twinkled with delight.

“I’m so glad.” She said, looking down at Kian, her hand still patting his hair. “This means you have a reason to stay,” and then her gaze met mine. “You have my brother’s heir. Even the council wouldn't deny that.” She smiled.

And now I couldn't bring myself to tell her she was wrong. That I wouldn't be staying. That Kian being Cassius’s son doesn't change anything. I would protect him from the council and anyone else and this was just a temporary measure until my wounds were fully healed.

Instead, I found myself reaching for the

❀° ┄───────╮ Sylphiette ╰───────┄ °❀By the time Kian and I returned to our room, it was sunset, but what I saw from the doorway the moment I opened the door to enter had me pausing. My room was a bustle of servants roaming around. Something about it felt completely odd.“Wh–What is going on here?” I asked, my voice soft as I stood shell-shocked at the threshold. The maids in the room paused at the sound of my voice, then turned to look at me and bowed before continuing with their various duties. But just then, Margaret slipped out of the bathroom.“My lady,” she called softly. Her face was wrapped with warmth as she smiled delightfully at me.My face furrowed with a frown as I watched her cross the room. “I was just about to come look for you. Come on, let’s get you prepared for dinner.”My brow raised at her announcement. All this just for dinner? I usually had dinner brought up to my room for Kian and me and it didn't take all of this preparation to set it up. This felt

❀° ┄───────╮ Sylphiette ╰───────┄ °❀My back collided against the door the moment I left Cassius’s office, dragging a low, sizzling breath out of me.I should have known but I still didn't think that his presence would still have such an effect on me. I thought I hated him but my body had betrayed me in more ways than one.In the end of it all, I had agreed to stay in Cassius’s pack… for Kian’s sake. I didn't know how long this situation was going to drag out but I hoped it wouldn’t be for a time too long.Although Cassius had made me a promise; not just for protection but he’d assured me that no one would take my son away from me—even after this ordeal was over—and neither would he. But could I really trust that he wouldn't.His promise didn't change the fact that he had the pride of an Alpha. Would he really let me walk away with his only heir in hand? He’d realized it since the moment he saw Kian and my admission a moment ago only confirmed it.I sighed, shaking my head

You don't know what that did to me… what I went through.”“You’re right, and I’m sorry, truly. But it wasn't intentional either.”That’s the second time he’s said something like that to me. It felt as though there was something he knew. Something he couldn't yet talk about.“What do you mean?” I asked, my voice coming out softer than intended.“It's just… It's complicated, Sylphie. I’m still trying to figure it out,” he said, stepping closer. “But I promise I’ll tell you everything when I do. You just have to trust me on this.” his voice cracked, almost desperate. As though he was trying to hold onto a slipping rope. But I shook my head, “How am I supposed to trust you?” I mutter, taking a step back. I lowered my head, avoiding his gaze and I wrapped my arms around myself as though to protect myself. “How am I supposed to trust yo

❀° ┄───────╮ Sylphiette ╰───────┄ °❀I pushed the door open and walked into Cassius’s office. The space greeted me again, and the earlier confrontation flashed through my head, stirring up emotions—anger, mostly. But emotions can be funny, especially when you're in a space filled with this man’s presence.I knew that and yet I couldn't stop myself from walking into his office for the second time this morning when he urged me in. I told myself I was here to scold him for his effrontery yet again. But the moment I walked in, Cassius’s scent, mixed with the crisp air, hit me like a tidal wave, filling up my senses, stirring sensations yet again that I had kept locked and buried deep inside me.The man standing in front of his desk turned and I was hit with a familiar presence. Then my gaze locked with his and they grew wide with recognition.Gilles. His trusted Beta and best friend.I had barely seen him in the weeks that I’ve been recuperating and once when Cassius had inter

As though restricting my movement wasn't enough, he puts a guard on me too?I know I should be grateful for the extra protection—Cassius is doing exactly what he said he would do—protecting me—but it only made my abated anger flare. I couldn't help but think that he was doing so excessively. The ones around the house were visible enough and overwhelming. I didn't need a bodyguard following me around. Now it just felt as though he was preparing for a war I didn't know about.“This is ridiculous. I don't need a guard. Please leave.” I gritted as calmly as I could.Reis didn't meet my gaze when he said. “I’m afraid I can't do that. I’ve been ordered by my Alpha to do so.” His voice was calm but firm as he maintained his poise; his hand over one of his pecs and his head bowed at me.

❀° ┄───────╮ Sylphiette ╰───────┄ °❀I slid the comb down Kian’s caramel blonde hair. The soft tresses slid smoothly through the teeth of the comb with every stroke of my hand.It was a minor task but it was one I enjoyed doing. There was something always calming about taking care of my son—grooming him—attentively. Maybe because I never had much of a chance during the days we spent living in the rogue pack and I never had the chance to savor it either whenever I did.But it grounded me, especially now because here—as much as I hated to admit it—I could concentratedly do that much. I could give Kian all the attention and motherly care that I’d failed to shower him with before. Now it’s become a calming routine. A soothing balm to quiet the anger that streamed through my veins. This morning had been one of the most chaotic moments of my life. Cassius’s refusal to keep to our deal. His restriction to even let us leave the house let alone the property. He said it was to prote
