**ARIA'S POV**

I sat frozen at the table, my hands gripping the edge so hard my knuckles went white.

The words still hung in the air between us, sharp and cutting.

Lysandra stood a few tables away, her expression smug and satisfied. The wolves around her were smirking, clearly enjoying the way she mocked me.

Anger surged through me, hot and sudden, burning straight through the embarrassment clawing at my chest. I wouldn't take that, especially not from her.

I pushed my chair back and stood, the scraping sound loud in the suddenly tense hall.

"Don't you dare insult me," I said, my voice stronger than I felt.

Lysandra's eyes widened briefly in surprise before her smirk returned. "Or what? You'll run away again? Oh wait, that didn't work out so well for you, did it?"

Laughter rippled through all the wolves at the table.

My face burned but I refused to sit back down. "I'm not afraid of you."

"You should be," Lysandra said, taking a step closer. "You're nothing here.

  • The Alpha's Breeding Pet    Chapter 39

**ARIA'S POV**I woke up without even remembering how I fell asleep. The confusion hit first, my mind scrambling to place where I was, why the bed felt so large, why warmth radiated from somewhere too close. Then I saw him.Caelan slept beside me, his breathing deep and gentle. His face was turned slightly toward me, the harsh lines softened but not erased. Even unconscious, he looked dangerous. My chest unclenched for a fraction of a second, and I felt like I could finally breathe. He was alive.I pushed the feeling away immediately, hating that it had surfaced at all. But my eyes moved to his side anyway, searching for the wound from the dagger.Bandages wrapped around his torso, visible where the sheets had fallen away. Clean white fabric that someone had changed recently. The wound had been treated, tended to properly. Not as serious as I'd feared.I tried to settle back into sleep but my body refused. I lay there listening to the fortress wake around us. Morning crept in throu

**ARIA'S POV** The ruckus started small. Then doors slammed loudly, one after another. Footsteps got too heavy and fast. I sat up on the bed, my heart already racing. There were more footsteps now. Boots pounding against the stone floors and sending vibrations through the walls. I swallowed hard. Something had happened. And Whatever it was, it wasn’t small. I swung my legs off the bed and crossed the room quickly, my bare feet cold against the floor. My hand trembled as I pushed the window open wider. The courtyard below was alive. Warriors were everywhere. It wasn't the usual patrol rotations, this looked more serious. My stomach clenched. I pressed closer to the window, trying to understand what I was seeing. No alarms had sounded. No bells or anything. So what was happening? I pulled back from the window, wrapping my arms around myself. The question repeated itself in my mind but found no answer. I was here in his chambers with no information or anything about wha

**ARIA'S POV** My footsteps echoed too loudly against the stone. I kept my arms wrapped around myself as I walked, trying to hold the pieces together. The corridors stretched endlessly ahead, torches casting shadows that jumped and twisted along the walls. The blade. The blood. Caelan's eyes going cold. My breath hitched. Stop thinking about it. But I couldn't. Every time I blinked, I saw that silver edge cutting through fabric and skin. Saw the thin line of red spreading across his robes. Felt the terror that had locked my body in place while chaos erupted around me. He'd almost died. Right there in front of me. My hands trembled. I pressed them harder against my sides. A guard passed me in the corridor, his eyes sliding over me without acknowledgment before he moved on. Two more stood at the intersection ahead, their postures rigid, hands resting on sword hilts. They were everywhere now. I turned down a different corridor, one that should lead back to Caelan's chambers.

**CAELAN'S POV** "Everyone out." My voice cut through the chaos like a blade through flesh. The effect was immediate as the guards began to usher people out of the hall. They knew better than to linger when I gave that order. The grand hall was emptying within seconds. People pressed toward the exits in a controlled flood, voices reduced to frightened murmurs. But one person didn't rush. Lysandra. She strolled out like she owned the place, her crimson dress flowing around her with deliberate grace. She looked suspiciously calm. She paused at the doorway, turning back just long enough to cast a glance across the hall. Not at me. At Aria. Something passed between them, something smug and knowing that made my jaw tighten. Then Lysandra disappeared through the doors. Everything about Lysandra's behavior tonight required examination. I would deal with that later. Jittery movement caught my attention. Aria was moving toward the nearest exit, her hands clasped tightly togeth

**ARIA'S POV** The grand hall was alive with sound, but it felt like drowning. "Go sit there," the maid ordered, pointing at the elevated platform. I obeyed, not because I wanted to, but because what else could I do? I sat beside Caelan's throne, feeling like prey displayed on a platform. The dress they'd given me clung to every curve, rich fabric that made me feel wrapped and presented. My hair had been arranged in waves over my bare shoulders. I could be classified as property dressed as decoration at that point. My hands stayed folded in my lap to hide the shaking. My spine stayed straight even though I wanted to curl into myself and vanish. Wolves stared openly at me. Some stared with curiosity, while others didn't even bother hiding the contempt in their eyes. I noticed a few look at me with hunger that made my stomach twist. The feast had started without Caelan, tables groaning under roasted meats and fruits. Wine flowed constantly, servants moving like shadows to refi
