I found her in her private chambers, nursing a bottle of whiskey.

I couldn’t help but notice the dark circles around her eyes, and how her hair, which was always immaculately straightened, looked for the first time, unkept.

“You’re a feisty one, Ruby—if that’s even your name.” Rosalia said as she walked to me. “I didn’t think I’d be seeing you here anytime soon, especially after how our little make-out session ended.”

She thought I was here for that.

“I came to talk.”

She gave me a long and th

I could tell Eloise was nervous as she laid on the examination table in the healing room. I stood by her side, my hands intertwined in her much softer, little ones.I watched Stella apply a gel over her stomach, before getting to work. Minutes after there was an image on the screen.“That is the baby,” Stella said with a wide smile. Eloise squinted at it, but just like me I didn’t know exactly what we were supposed to be looking for.“It’s beautiful,” Eloise said, though I still didn’t think she’d seen it yet.“It is,” Stella agreed, “Your next scan is scheduled for three weeks from today. We should be able to tell it’s gender by then.”Eloise had gone very still at that, but Stella hadn’t noticed that as she went on prescribing drugs that could help in case of fatigue, dizziness or loss of appetite, and excusing herself when she was done.“Are you alright?” I questioned, and she nodded but I could tell she wasn’t. The nightmares might have ceased but I knew she still held traumas fr

It was already midnight and I was still at the office. Letters from the Zone leaders were piled up in front of me, most of them requesting I give out a public statement on Rosalia’s death. I’d spoken to Captain Hilary, he wasn’t exactly bothered about the ex-Luna’s death, but the fact that it was causing an uproar, one that could be tamed if I ‘lied’—yes, lie, because he too believed I’d killed my own mate.“Have you told her?” Gideon asked, he was busy writing back responses to the letters. He alone had the admirable ability to articulate responses that said everything and yet nothing at all and so I’d left it to him.“Told her what?”“About the letter from the Council?”“Of course not. She’ll only worry more.”“You right,” he agreed to my surprise. “What? She definitely doesn’t need all of that on her plate, she’s already going through enough.”“Something happened, didn’t it?” It was a question as much a statement. He let out a breath, “You should ask her about it,”“Start talking.

CASSIANI sat in the investigation room before a middle-aged woman with short graying hair. Gideon stood outside, just by the door.“Lucia, that’s the name right?” I questioned and she nodded. But I didn’t miss her trembling hands, or the way she kept biting on her lips in worry, or the way her eyes kept darting to the door as if she was calculating her possibilities of escaping. It was zero, but that didn’t stop her gaze from trailing to the door one more time .“Y-yes, Alpha,” She stammered. She was afraid, I could sense it.“I’m not going to hurt you Lucia, all I’m going to do is ask you a few questions.” She nodded urgently.“I’ve heard from a few sources that you’ve been spreading some information about me and the ex-Luna. And I just want to know why?”Now Gideon stepped in, shutting the door behind him and that seemed to worsen the woman's nerves. She reached for the cup of water on the table and brought it to her lips, but her trembling hand hardly allowed any into her mout

Layla sat on the chair in front of her dressing mirror, her tiny hands clasped tightly around Tom—her new stuffed cat, as I brushed through her long, blond locks. I was worried about her. She’d refused to eat; in fact, she’d hardly said a word since she woke up this morning.“I don’t want to go to class,” she murmured.“But honey, you love dancing—”“I don’t want to go to class!” she snapped and I paused.“Layla, are you alright?”“I want momma,” she cried, and my chest tightened. “I want my momma,” she went on.I dropped the brush and picked her up, but she struggled away from my grip, until I put her down. “Where is my momma—and uncle Jaffason?”“Jaffason is back in his pack, but he’ll be visiting you in a few days.”That did nothing to stop her tears, “Take me to momma,” she cried on. For the next thirty minutes, I tried to get her to stop crying, but she wouldn't and with each passing minute, I could feel the familiar panic rising. I couldn’t do this, I was foolish to think I c

All this time, I’d been completely oblivious, but suddenly I could see it. The looks, filled with hatred, the way parents pulled their children away from me as I walked past, the murmurs that followed me—none of them bothered to hide the fact that I was the subject of their hushed discussions. The anger I’d earlier felt had faded, and I couldn’t help but go over the woman’s words. What had she wanted to say before Gideon cut her off? What exactly had I been blind to all this time?I should have noticed the pack’s sudden coldness the day of my arrival, I should have noticed the accusation in their eyes, but I didn’t. I was too caught up in my life and my problems, I didn’t care to look deep enough. Now though, I was looking and I didn’t like what I saw. The hallways out of the building seemed to stretch on and on, an unending walk of shame. Scrutinized by judging eyes, I felt myself grow smaller with each step I took—and there was the overwhelming urge to hide away behind Gideon. “Oh,

I was living in the very same room as Cassian. It all felt surreal and yet nothing about it felt wrong. On the contrary, it all felt… right.Cassian joined me in Layla’s new room.“Do you like the redecorations?"I nodded, “It’s… cute,” I admitted. The room had been designed in purple and white, with everything a child could need made available. It was every child’s dream room.“One more thing,” Cassian said, handing me a black-card.“What is this?”“A card in your name, you are free to get anything you need—there are no limits. Also, your father would be placed on salary—enough to give him a very comfortable life, there are jobs available if he likes having something to do.”Tears filled my eyes, “Cassian, this is too much.”“You’ve given me much, much, more.” He whispered.“Thank you—for everything,”“No, thank you, for giving me another chance.”Layla was on the bed, scribbling in a note book. I sat beside her. “What are you writing?” I questioned.“I’m drawing,” she answered, her
