Chapter 3

Author: Palma W
Early the next morning, I was dragged into the middle of a crowd, and Violet ordered me to fetch a glove she'd thrown, as entertainment.

In Silver Moon Valley, my dad could hardly bear to let me walk on ice when it snowed. At the Black Pine lodge, Violet had metal clasps nailed to a wooden platform and chained me there with silver. She tossed the glove to the far end of the stage and gave the chain the slightest tug. It felt like a red-hot iron band clamped around my neck, the burn sinking into my bones.

"Go on," she said, smiling at the watching guests. "It puts on that pitiful act to get sympathy."

I forced myself forward two steps, and the metal edge sliced open my paw pads. Blood dripped onto the stage. The audience burst into applause. Someone praised Violet Grant for being so good at training animals, and one guest even made an offer to buy this rare white fox.

Dylan set up a big screen and played the video of me killing the hound the day before. On the screen, blood covered my mouth as I stumbled and struggled, and the jeering laughter around me drowned out everything.

One guest asked quietly, "Doesn't that little thing look kind of like a wolf?"

"If that's a wolf, then I'm the highest-ranking Alpha in the Rockies," Dylan said, then burst out laughing at his own joke.

Lucy pushed her way over with a first-aid kit, trying to bandage my bleeding paw. Dylan stepped in to stop her and whispered something in her ear. Lucy went white and backed silently into the corner.

I turned to look at her. She was gripping the first-aid kit tightly. Her lips parted several times, but no sound came out.

Not long after, a woman in work clothes walked up to me. She didn't reach out to touch me. Her eyes landed first on the burns the silver had left on my neck.

"Who put a silver collar on it?" she asked.

Violet jerked her chin carelessly toward Nolan. "What's wrong, Joanna?"

"I'm the lodge's vet. Silver doesn't leave burns like this on an ordinary dog." Joanna crouched down and looked closely at my ears, then brushed aside the fluff on my forehead. "Look here. There's even a faint crescent-shaped marking. You should take that collar off right now and contact the nearby packs to find out who it is."

My heart started pounding.

Finally, someone wants to find out who I really am!

I nodded hard and touched the back of her hand with my good paw. Joanna's expression grew even more serious, and she stood to reach for her phone.

Violet snatched her work badge.

"So you're saying I can't tell a dog from a wolf?" The smile disappeared from her face completely. "Look at the size of it. It's not even as big as one leg of a grown wolf, and it doesn't show any sign of a wolf spirit. You'd make up a lie like that just to cause trouble?"

"I'm only suggesting we confirm who it is." Joanna reached out to take her badge back. "What if this is a child who just hasn't been able to shift yet—"

"Shut up."

Nolan stepped forward and signaled for security to take Joanna away. Unlike Violet, he didn't shout. His face just darkened. "We have a room full of important guests tonight. Don't let rumors like that get around."

As security dragged Joanna out, she turned back and shouted, "Don't let silver touch it again! At least treat its wounds first!"

Not a single person there listened to her.

I tried to go after her, but the silver chain yanked tight and dragged me right back. Violet crouched down, pinched my mouth shut, and smiled coldly. "Trying to find yourself some help, huh? Naughty girl."

She had someone bring her a pair of silver pliers, then clamped them around my sharpest canine tooth. The piercing pain brought tears to my eyes, but I still bit down hard on her outstretched finger. Violet shrieked and raised her hand to strike me.

Dylan quickly grabbed her. "It still has to go on stage tonight. Too much blood won't look good. Wait until all the guests are here, then you can deal with it properly."

"Then let me take a little souvenir first."

She snipped off a long tuft of fur from my tail and told someone to make it into brooches for the VIP guests to wear. The white fur scattered across the floor was ground into the dust under people's shoes. I couldn't help thinking of how my dad used to brush my fur. Whenever he found a knot, he'd carefully work it loose bit by bit. He never once yanked.

I used to think he fussed too much. Now I wished more than anything that he'd fuss over me a little more.

Lucy took me back to the isolation room, her hands shaking as she closed the door. Only when I pressed my head against the bars did she bend down, her voice barely a breath.

"Little one..." she whispered. "I don't know if they really think you're a dog, but I can tell you understand what people are saying."

I looked up at her.

"My little brother, Finn, has never been able to shift either. The pack says he's a useless little wolf, so they use him to train the hounds." She bit her lip, and her tears fell onto her apron. "Last night he bit one of the dog trainers, and they locked him in the storage building out back. They're sending him away tomorrow."

I froze.

So in this lodge full of mounted animals, not being able to shift didn't just mean getting laughed at. It meant anyone could treat you like prey.

Lucy gripped the bars tight. "Please, if you really have a family, could you... find a way to save Finn too?"

I couldn't even get myself out.

But looking at Lucy's battered face, I still leaned forward and gently rubbed my forehead against her palm.

This time, I wanted my family to come for more than just me.

In the sixth week after my wolf spirit woke up, I finally managed to shift into human form. The first thing I did as a human was wait until my dad's back was turned and snatch the last piece of roast meat off the plate with my teeth."Mia!" My dad turned around, saw me, and froze for two seconds before scrambling to grab the clothes he'd gotten ready ahead of time. "Put some clothes on first!"I stood in the middle of the living room and looked down at my hands. Each hand had five slender fingers, and faint scars from the silver burns still marked my palms. I made a fist and opened it, over and over. I finally didn't have to scratch marks into wood with my claws to say what I meant.Sierra heard the commotion and burst into the room. She picked me up and spun me around twice, then checked every scar left on my body like she was inspecting a patrol member's gear, complaining that I was too skinny."And this." She shoved a thick coat at me. "It's cold up in the mountains. No more running

The day Grant was removed as Alpha, there was no screaming, no fighting, and no dramatic protest. He arrived at the Black Pine council hall as usual and, out of habit, told someone to get the door for him. The patrol member at the door stayed where he was, the sealed silver guns in his arms."Sorry, Mr. Grant," the patrol member said. "An interim leader is in charge here now."Grant froze.Five days had passed since the arson at the mine. My neck was still wrapped in bandages, and my left back leg was in a brace. I hadn't wanted to go out. But Lucy said all the kids Black Pine had hurt would be there today to confirm what would happen to them next. I couldn't stop worrying, so I pestered my dad into bringing me.My dad moved my cushion to the break room next door and left the door open, so I could see and hear everything that happened in the council hall. Sierra guarded the door and didn't let anyone with silver weapons near it.In the past, Grant could summon dozens of bodyguards with

In the end, I was the one who tore the bag holding Lucy's original videos from Violet's arm.Violet had been plotting one last way out.Lucy's phone had the full, unedited videos. Sierra had only managed to save a few clips, and most of the original footage hadn't been backed up yet. While the healers were busy taking in the wounded, Violet sent her driver to steal the phone from the nurses' station. She planned to throw it into the lodge's incinerator to destroy the evidence, then force Finn to change his story and tell everyone he'd been teasing the hounds for fun. When I saw her circle back to the ambulance, my dad was on the other side, arranging shelter for the victims. Finn had just fallen asleep, and Lucy had tucked him in and turned to pour some water. The ambulance door suddenly flew open, and Violet reached in to drag the little wolf off the cot."Come with me," she threatened in a low voice. "Tell everyone you're the one who provoked those hounds. As long as you do what I sa

The last thing I heard before I passed out was my dad asking why I'd gotten out of the car on my own. When I opened my eyes again, the first thing I saw was that same angry, exhausted face.I tried to say I was sorry.Instead, a booming howl burst out of me, and the healer sorting medical tools beside me jumped. My sister was leaning against the car door. She'd been looking stern, but in the end, she couldn't help laughing. "Even your apologies are a lot louder than they used to be."I looked down at myself. My front paws were wide and thick enough to cover an entire old blanket. My silvery white fur hung past my shoulders, and my tail wasn't a tiny puffball anymore. It looked like a broad white broom with a pointed tip. Before I could even celebrate, the healer picked up a pair of scissors and cut through the old gauze on my neck. The second she touched the wound, I flinched back into my dad's arms, and all the dignity of my newly awakened wolf spirit vanished."Don't move," the heale

No matter how hard the rabbit holes in Silver Moon Valley were to squeeze through, they were nothing compared to the narrow drainage ditch in that abandoned mine.By the time we got to the mine, it was almost completely dark. The mountain wind carried the smell of rust and damp, rotting wood. Sierra took her people to guard the entrance to the mountain road, Ethan went to search the old warehouse, and my dad stayed with me in the armored vehicle. I lay by the window. Every movement of my back leg tugged at the wound, and the healer's warning kept echoing in my ears.I was staying put in the car like a good girl.Until a familiar smell drifted up from the bottom of the hill.Finn's blood, mixed with the burnt smell of silver searing flesh.I threw myself at the car door frantically, my paw pointing again and again at the drainage ditch down the slope. Sierra heard the noise and ran over. She followed my paw and spotted a wooden board behind the weeds, sealed tight over the drain opening

The silver chain left more than 30 burns on my neck. When the healer took off the last layer of bandages, my dad looked as if those wounds hurt him more than they hurt me.Stop staring at me. The more you stare, the slower the healer works.Of course, I couldn't actually say it. All I could do was wag my tail so it brushed his hand. But the moment my tail moved, it pulled at my wounds, and I curled into a ball, wincing.Joanna came to help with the treatment too. Violet had confiscated her work badge, but Joanna still insisted on examining me. She put the silver collar in an evidence bag and explained to us that a grown werewolf's wolf spirit could be disrupted by silver, and because I'd never shifted, my body was especially fragile. That was why I looked so much like an ordinary pup.My dad stroked my head. He was quiet for a long time before he spoke. "You've been our girl from the very beginning. Nothing about that has ever changed."I felt proud and teary at the same time. Before l
