Chapter 2

Author: Palma W
When Violet put the silver collar on me, all I could think about was biting that metal tag engraved with "Snowball" to pieces.

The Black Pine lodge was a timber mansion tucked deep in the pine forest. Elegant lampposts stood outside, and the living room walls were covered with antlers and mounted animals. The moment the crate was opened, a woman wrinkled her nose. "It's bleeding all over. Shouldn't we get a vet to look at it first?"

Violet ignored her and told her people to put me in a glass pen so visiting guests could look at me.

"Don't wash it yet. If it behaves, we'll clean it up later."

The silver collar suddenly tightened, and the cold metal clasp pressed right into my wounds. The pain tore a yelp out of me. But she only smiled and flicked the little gold tag in front of my face.

"Come here, Snowball. Sit."

I turned my back on her.

She brought over a plate of roast meat, and its rich smell wafted over me. I hadn't eaten or drunk a thing since noon, and my stomach growled at the worst possible moment. When Violet heard it, she laughed and slapped the table, then held the meat up high to tease me.

"Paw. Now bark twice, and you can eat."

I turned my head away. Even if they treated me like a dog, I was still a wolf. A wolf might go hungry, but she would never do tricks for anyone.

When I wouldn't cooperate, she just fed all the meat to the big hunting dogs nearby.

"Looks like it still hasn't figured out who its master is." Violet waved the handler over. "Let my babies in to teach it some manners."

The moment the cage door opened, I understood what she meant by "teaching manners." Four hunting dogs almost as big as me surrounded me. The black one in front lunged at me. I scrambled along the bars and only just got out of the way, and his sharp teeth splintered the floorboard beside my paws. Another dog clamped down on my back leg and dragged me a foot and a half across the floor.

The thick smell of blood made me cough. I remembered what my sister taught me. If you can't get away, never turn your back on your opponent.

I pushed through the pain, rolled over, and bit down hard on the side of a hound's neck. The big dog let go, thrashed a few times, then collapsed and lay still. The other hounds backed away, whimpering softly.

I propped myself half upright, my mouth full of the taste of blood, and I even felt a secret little thrill. See? I'm not some dog you can push around.

That thrill lasted all of three seconds.

"You killed my dog!" Violet charged into the pen, grabbed me by the ear, and hauled me up off the ground. "I've raised him since he was a puppy. How dare you hurt him!"

She reached for the hunting knife hanging on the wall. Nolan stepped in to stop her, and I naively thought I'd been saved.

"We have important guests coming tomorrow night." He stared at my snow-white fur. "If the fur gets cut up, how are we supposed to show it off? Put it in another cage and lock it up tight."

Just like that, I was thrown into an isolation room floored with cold metal plates. Every time I moved a paw, the silver collar tore my old wounds open again. The metal was freezing, so I lay on my side to hold on to what little warmth I had. Dylan stood on the other side of the glass, filming with his phone and narrating for the camera. "See that? That's the vicious dog the Black Pine princess just tamed."

After the door closed, a girl in an apron stopped outside for a moment. Her cheek was red and swollen, her sleeves were worn and pilled, and she had a small bowl of water hidden in her hands.

"Don't make a sound." She pushed the bowl through the gap. "Drink some water first."

I sniffed it warily. It was clean water.

I'd just put my mouth to the bowl when Violet's voice suddenly exploded behind her. "Lucy, who said you could feed it?"

The girl froze in terror, and the bowl fell from her hand and shattered on the floor. Violet slapped her so hard she slammed into the pen.

"Did you forget my rules? I said it stays hungry. Nobody feeds it without my say-so."

Lucy kept her head down and apologized over and over. Violet raised her hand to hit her again, and I don't know where I found the strength, but I still lunged and bit her bootlaces.

The bodyguards immediately pinned my head to the floor. Violet grabbed a leather whip and lashed my back, then pointed at Lucy. "Kneel over there and watch. Speak up for it one more time, and I'll punish you too."

I don't remember much about the wounds I got that night. I only remember that after everyone was gone, Lucy knelt outside the isolation room with a soft cloth and gently wiped the blood from my mouth through the bars. I was shaking all over from the pain, and she was shaking too.

"You didn't have to take that for me," she whispered.

I put my one good front paw on her hand. Her eyes welled up, and she didn't say another word.

An old brass plate hung on the wall of the isolation room, engraved with a worn wildfire rescue emblem. I looked closely at the knot pattern on it and recognized it right away.

It was the knot my brother had taught me.

When I was little, I kept tumbling down rocky slopes, so Ethan would secure me with a soft rope. He told me that kind of knot could keep someone safe without cutting into their skin. Later, when he worked on wildfire rescues, he taught the same knots to people here at Black Pine too.

But now, these people had woven silver threads into the rope net and turned something meant to save lives into the bonds that held me.

At the other end of the hallway, Violet was excitedly planning tomorrow night's party.

"The footage has to be perfect. I want everyone to see how I tamed this dog."

I licked the bloody wound on my back leg. Tomorrow, the second I get a chance, I'm biting her again.

In the sixth week after my wolf spirit woke up, I finally managed to shift into human form. The first thing I did as a human was wait until my dad's back was turned and snatch the last piece of roast meat off the plate with my teeth."Mia!" My dad turned around, saw me, and froze for two seconds before scrambling to grab the clothes he'd gotten ready ahead of time. "Put some clothes on first!"I stood in the middle of the living room and looked down at my hands. Each hand had five slender fingers, and faint scars from the silver burns still marked my palms. I made a fist and opened it, over and over. I finally didn't have to scratch marks into wood with my claws to say what I meant.Sierra heard the commotion and burst into the room. She picked me up and spun me around twice, then checked every scar left on my body like she was inspecting a patrol member's gear, complaining that I was too skinny."And this." She shoved a thick coat at me. "It's cold up in the mountains. No more running

The day Grant was removed as Alpha, there was no screaming, no fighting, and no dramatic protest. He arrived at the Black Pine council hall as usual and, out of habit, told someone to get the door for him. The patrol member at the door stayed where he was, the sealed silver guns in his arms."Sorry, Mr. Grant," the patrol member said. "An interim leader is in charge here now."Grant froze.Five days had passed since the arson at the mine. My neck was still wrapped in bandages, and my left back leg was in a brace. I hadn't wanted to go out. But Lucy said all the kids Black Pine had hurt would be there today to confirm what would happen to them next. I couldn't stop worrying, so I pestered my dad into bringing me.My dad moved my cushion to the break room next door and left the door open, so I could see and hear everything that happened in the council hall. Sierra guarded the door and didn't let anyone with silver weapons near it.In the past, Grant could summon dozens of bodyguards with

In the end, I was the one who tore the bag holding Lucy's original videos from Violet's arm.Violet had been plotting one last way out.Lucy's phone had the full, unedited videos. Sierra had only managed to save a few clips, and most of the original footage hadn't been backed up yet. While the healers were busy taking in the wounded, Violet sent her driver to steal the phone from the nurses' station. She planned to throw it into the lodge's incinerator to destroy the evidence, then force Finn to change his story and tell everyone he'd been teasing the hounds for fun. When I saw her circle back to the ambulance, my dad was on the other side, arranging shelter for the victims. Finn had just fallen asleep, and Lucy had tucked him in and turned to pour some water. The ambulance door suddenly flew open, and Violet reached in to drag the little wolf off the cot."Come with me," she threatened in a low voice. "Tell everyone you're the one who provoked those hounds. As long as you do what I sa

The last thing I heard before I passed out was my dad asking why I'd gotten out of the car on my own. When I opened my eyes again, the first thing I saw was that same angry, exhausted face.I tried to say I was sorry.Instead, a booming howl burst out of me, and the healer sorting medical tools beside me jumped. My sister was leaning against the car door. She'd been looking stern, but in the end, she couldn't help laughing. "Even your apologies are a lot louder than they used to be."I looked down at myself. My front paws were wide and thick enough to cover an entire old blanket. My silvery white fur hung past my shoulders, and my tail wasn't a tiny puffball anymore. It looked like a broad white broom with a pointed tip. Before I could even celebrate, the healer picked up a pair of scissors and cut through the old gauze on my neck. The second she touched the wound, I flinched back into my dad's arms, and all the dignity of my newly awakened wolf spirit vanished."Don't move," the heale

No matter how hard the rabbit holes in Silver Moon Valley were to squeeze through, they were nothing compared to the narrow drainage ditch in that abandoned mine.By the time we got to the mine, it was almost completely dark. The mountain wind carried the smell of rust and damp, rotting wood. Sierra took her people to guard the entrance to the mountain road, Ethan went to search the old warehouse, and my dad stayed with me in the armored vehicle. I lay by the window. Every movement of my back leg tugged at the wound, and the healer's warning kept echoing in my ears.I was staying put in the car like a good girl.Until a familiar smell drifted up from the bottom of the hill.Finn's blood, mixed with the burnt smell of silver searing flesh.I threw myself at the car door frantically, my paw pointing again and again at the drainage ditch down the slope. Sierra heard the noise and ran over. She followed my paw and spotted a wooden board behind the weeds, sealed tight over the drain opening

The silver chain left more than 30 burns on my neck. When the healer took off the last layer of bandages, my dad looked as if those wounds hurt him more than they hurt me.Stop staring at me. The more you stare, the slower the healer works.Of course, I couldn't actually say it. All I could do was wag my tail so it brushed his hand. But the moment my tail moved, it pulled at my wounds, and I curled into a ball, wincing.Joanna came to help with the treatment too. Violet had confiscated her work badge, but Joanna still insisted on examining me. She put the silver collar in an evidence bag and explained to us that a grown werewolf's wolf spirit could be disrupted by silver, and because I'd never shifted, my body was especially fragile. That was why I looked so much like an ordinary pup.My dad stroked my head. He was quiet for a long time before he spoke. "You've been our girl from the very beginning. Nothing about that has ever changed."I felt proud and teary at the same time. Before l
