“Again.”

Leo’s voice came through the cold air like an oppressive command. Elena was panting very hard, and her entire body was covered with sweat as she dropped to one knee. They were now safely at one the safe houses he talked about…a few hours west of the cottage, but instead of focusing on resting and checking for potential threats when they arrived, he had insisted that she begin to train the next day.

Her arms burned already from the relentless effort, and her legs were trembling violently. Even lungs felt as if they were filled with smoke.

“Leo…” she began, trying to plead for a little bit of rest.

“Again, Elena,” he snapped, moving closer to her with no sign of mercy in his eyes.

She grit her teeth, forcing herself to rise. Her muscles threatened to collapse in protest, but she squared her shoulders and faced him again.

“Shift,” he commanded.

She hesitated. “We’ve been at this for hours. You said I was improving…”

“And I said again.”

.Elena stared at him…waiting for him to say something else, but he only sighed and seemed to become even calmer than before.“That’s enough for today.”She frowned at him, suspicious at the sudden change. “Really? You’re not going to tell me to go again?”His lips twitched with something that almost resembled a smile, but it was more like a secret trying to escape. “You’ve done well enough. For now.”She let out a tired huff and pushed herself up from the grass. “You say that like I survived an execution.”“In a real fight,” he said calmly. “Maybe you just might survive one.”He reached for the small flask of water they had brought along, taking a sip before looking at her again. His eyes roamed over her…the sweat soaked face and the strands of hair stuck to her neck. He hesitated before looking away and said, “There’s a stream nearby. About five minutes north. You should freshen up before the light fades off completely.”Elena looked at him in surpr

Mara’s head jerked up instantly when Damon walked into the room unannounced. She had been crying quietly for what felt like hours, still broken by his cold departure a few hours earlier. He had made it very clear that he was not coming back, and that she was on her own…But there he was, standing in the doorway and completely soaked from the rain. Damon didn’t say a word at first, he just scanned the room with those piercing eyes of his before settling on her.Her heart leaped, and hope flared for a moment before it was quickly replaced by confusion.“Damon?” she whispered, almost afraid to believe that he was really there. He didn’t answer. Instead, he took two slow steps into the room, taking in her damp face, the trembling hands she was trying to hide, and then he said in a firm and authoritative voice. “Get dressed. We’re leaving.”Mara froze. For a second, she thought she had misheard him. “W…what?”“You heard me,” He blurted out, then turned away from her and continued scanning

Damon drove for hours after leaving the motel, but his mind could not stop worrying about the single person that was pushing him foward…Elena. Every mile that passed only made her name echo louder in his head. He could see her face every time he blinked…her fierce eyes, and her stubborn spirit. The thought of her trapped somewhere, maybe in chains or even at the mercy of VORTEX soldiers. She’s strong, he told himself. Too strong to be caught easily. But strength alone didn’t stop bullets, and he knew that much. It didn’t stop what VORTEX did to those they caught.“Damn it,” he muttered under his breath. He couldn’t shake the images…the horrible stories that Mara had told him about the organization that hunted their kind. They weren’t just human zealots or mercenaries. They were organized, trained, and ruthless. A machine that moved in the shadows, tearing apart anything that smelled remotely like a wolf. The car’s tires hissed against the wet road as a light d

Damon was standing against the window and dressing up when Mara woke up from her deep sleep. She frowned, still a bit groggy. “Damon?”He didn’t answer. He just reached for his jacket, slung it over his shoulder, and began tucking a folded map into his pocket.Mara felt her heart skip in her chest. “Why are you up so early?”He froze for half a second but didn’t turn. “Go back to sleep.”Something in the way his voice sounded cold and detached snapped her fully awake. She sat up fast, letting the blanket fall from her shoulders. “Wait…where are you going?”“Somewhere I need to be,” he said.“That’s not an answer,” she snapped at him.“It’s the only one you’re getting.”Her pulse spiked. He wasn’t joking, and that realization made her voice shake. “You’re leaving, aren’t you?”He didn’t deny it. He just adjusted his belt mechanically, passing it through the waistband like he had all the time in the world.“Damon,” she called him again, much firmer this time. “You can’t just walk out li

By the time Leo and Elena finally returned to the cottage, the afternoon sun had already begun to sink behind the trees, casting long golden streaks across the forest floor. Everything looked quiet and normal…just the way it always did after chaos. But Elena could feel it in her bones…nothing was the same anymore. The air was too still, and the silence too deep. Even the birds had stopped singing.Leo pushed the door open first, scanning every corner before stepping inside. His instincts were always razor sharp, and his movements careful and prepared. She knew he was no longer the easygoing hunter that had rescued her and taken very good care of her, but she could not tell what it was that seemed to be eating at him.“Lock the door,” he muttered as he crossed to the window, peering out through the crack in the curtain.Elena obeyed quietly, although her heart was still heavy from the fight earlier. The image of those rogues and the evil glowing in their eyes refused to leave her mind.
