Damon’s car finally rolled past the border and into the heart of Shadow pack territory. He slowed down, sweeping through the entire land with a suspicious eye. Something was wrong… very wrong.

The streets that were usually filled with chatter and movement were now deserted, and all the houses were locked up tight. No children played in the dirt, and no pack members sat gossiping on the porches. The air itself felt… abandoned.

Damon frowned at the sight, then finally packed his car in the middle of the street right in front of the pack's council house. The place looked less like a pack territory and more like an empty graveyard. He stepped out, stretching his senses, sniffing for life, for movement, for anything. Nothing. Just emptiness.

“Cowards,” he muttered with a dark and lethal voice.

He had come searching for Elena, but all he was seeing was a pack too terrified to face him. And that told him more than their words ever could. Something caught his attention

The city of Light never really slept. Even late into the night, the skyline was alive with well lit towers of glass and steel. From his office on the twenty second floor of his large complex, Elias Stone looked down at it all with an unimpressed sigh. He was a man who had many ideas, and would do anything to shape the world into the vision he had in mind for everybody. He was with a guest in the office, a tall man with the weary face of a financier. They had been going over numbers for a new shipping contract, discussing routes, costs, and the well crafted back channels that kept profits flowing smoothly where others might drown in bureaucracy. Elias listened with the ease of a predator biding his time, nodding in places, occasionally asking a question technical enough to keep the other man on his toes. His phone's ringing eventually broke the tense atmosphere of the meeting. When he looked at the screen, it was one of his operational secret lines…one that only a very s

As they ate in silence, Elena couldn't stop staring no matter how she tried to. There was so much that she wanted to know about him also, but she wasn't sure how to place the question without making him angry, especially since she didn't tell her own story.“What about you, Leo?” She asked timidly. “What's your own story?”“My story.” He grinned sheepishly, stayed quiet for a while, and then the words came out calm and patient. “Maybe if you know who I am, it will put you a bit at ease.”Something in the way he said it quickly hooked her attention, and she knew instantly that it wasn't just casual talk anymore. There was now a lost look in his eyes, almost like someone who was reaching to the past and digging up ghosts he had buried a long time ago. After staying silent and mumbling a few things to himself, Leo finally began to speak again.“A long time ago, I wasn’t really living like this,” he said, spreading his hand out to signify the modest cottage. “I

Later that evening, when they were both settled and Elena's wariness had eased off a little, they sat at Leo's modest table, basking in the aroma of simmering meat and herbs that filled the little cottage. In front of Elena was a roughly carved wooden bowl, filled with a rich brown stew, thick with chunks of tender venison, potatoes, and wild carrots that Leo must have pulled from the earth himself. It looked… homely and honest. The kind of food that belonged in the center of a family table and not in the heart of a lonely forest hideout.Leo sat opposite her, his own bowl already half empty. His hair was still a bit damp from where he had washed in the stream, and his still bare chest was glistening in the firelight. There was something so relaxed about him, as if he wasn’t harboring a stranger who had nearly died in his care. As if there weren't masked killers prowling somewhere in the woods.“You’re not eating,” he observed with his deep voice, giving her a look

Elena blinked into dim light as consciousness crept back into her. Her vision was still blurry, but shapes were slowly starting to take form. The first thing she noticed was the ceiling… low wooden beams worn by time, but carefully polished smoothly as if someone had been caring for them over the years. She turned her head, groaning softly at the stab of pain it caused, and saw the rest of the room.It was small and old, the kind of place that was an evidence of years gone by. The curtains, faded but freshly washed, hung neatly beside a square window where a bit of sunlight struggled through. The bed was firm but neatly made, and she realized with a strange disorientation that someone had tucked her in under the blanket. It was… tidy. Old, but cared for.Her heart began to thud wildly as she began to get herself back. This wasn’t her room in Shadow Pack, neither was it Damon's Pack house. And for a horrifying second, she couldn’t even remember how she had gotten her

The absence of Damon’s dominating presence felt like a wound in the walls of the Nightshade pack house, and even with Hector's diligent presence, it just wasn't the same. The guards moved about stiffly, looking uncertain of themselves, while servants carried out their duties with hushed urgency, keeping their ears tuned to whispers about where their Alpha had gone and what would become of them in his absence.Upstairs in Nyla's room, she was seated with Lucia. They had exchanged the normal pleasantries when Lucia arrived, but the conversation had quickly drifted into meaningless chatter… weather, new dresses, idle gossip about servants and Hector’s over serious demeanor. Nyla indulged her for a few minutes, but her patience was never built for small talk. She sipped her wine, keeping her eyes steadily locked on Lucia's, until finally, Lucia gave in to her own curiosity.“All right,” Lucia said with a tone of suspicion, crossing her legs and leaning forward slightly. “K

Draco stood in front of the hotel window, with a cigarette dangling from his lips as he smugly grinned at the city skyline. After years of banishment, after fighting his way through the heart of the supernatural crime world, he was back. Back where he belonged. Back in the shadow of his brother’s empire… the one he intended to take for himself. The smoke floated from his lips as he exhaled slowly, savoring the moment. Home.He reached for his phone on the bedside table, dialed a number, and pressed it to his ear.A familiar voice purred almost immediately. “Well, well. To what do I owe the pleasure?”Draco grinned again, and then spoke in that lazily amused tone of his. “I’m back in town, kitten. Checked into the Grand Imperial. Room 1509. Thought you would want to come and welcome me properly.”There was a pause, then a low chuckle. “You arrogant bastard. You really think I’d come running just because you snapped your fingers?”“I don’t think,” Draco s
