{Dominic}

My eyes snapped open to a blurry sky, and immediately, the sharp tang of magic stung my nose. Everything hurt, and I felt like I’d been in a head-on collision with a freight train. I groaned and blinked rapidly, trying to focus.

“Dominic. Dominic, hey—” I heard Dahlia’s voice, even though it sounded fuzzy.

She crouched beside me, hands pressing against my chest to check if I was still breathing.

“Great,” I rasped, still trying to figure out what was going on.

“Get up!” Dahlia yelled.

I rolled to my side and slowly started getting up when I saw another person in the garden. Isaac stood as stiff as a statue, his face was pale, and his eyes were wide in both fear and shock.

But he wasn’t looking at me. I followed his line of sight and my eyes fell on Odessa.

Only, she wasn’t on the ground anymore…. she was floating.

Her body hung mid-air like a puppet suspended by threads of light, her hair waving as if underwater. And the energy pouring off her made it even hard to breathe.

    {Lyra}The moment I read Isaac’s message, my heart stuttered. All reason and logic flew straight out the window. I slammed the laptop shut so hard it bounced, then I scrambled to my feet, nearly tripping over the rug on my way to the bedroom. Ten minutes later, I had stuffed a backpack with the essentials and was getting into my car. Before I went rushing back to Crownshaven, there were some things I needed sorted out first, and one of those things required me making a stop.My car drove through the iron gates of Victor Graves' manor, and I took a deep breath to calm myself as I parked the car right at the front door. I never once thought that I would ever come back here, but I guess fate had other plans.The whole house looked exactly the same. Cold, grand, and gray. I marched up the steps and knocked, loud and hard.For a second, nothing happened, then the door suddenly creaked open, and there he was. Victor.His eyes widened like he’d seen a ghost. “Lyra…?” he whispered in a rough

    {Lyra}I couldn’t stop thinking about her, floating in the middle of a ruin like she was caught between the mortal world and the supernatural world. Her eyes, her voice, it all felt so familiar.I wrapped my arms tightly around myself as I sat on my balcony that night, staring down at the quiet town square of Ravenshire. A few teens loitered outside the pizza place, someone’s dog constantly kept barking, and the bar sign across the street flickered happily, welcoming its next victims. But my mind was stuck in that burned-out shell of a house, staring into the glowing fragments where Odessa had vanished.I shouldn’t have even been thinking about it, but I couldn’t just let it go. I couldn’t ignore Odessa’s cry for help even if I wanted to.So the next morning, I brewed myself a cup of coffee, packed my hair into a simple bun, and stormed out the door with my laptop tucked under my arm. I needed to reach out, but I couldn’t do that with a traceable device. I was just starting to enjoy

    {Dominic}It had been two days. Forty-eight hours of Isaac locked in his room, trying to trace whoever cashed that cheque. Two days of staring at my phone every five minutes, waiting for a miracle. No leads. No calls. Just coffee that kept getting stronger and nerves that kept getting thinner.In the meantime, the chaos at NovaCore had morphed into a full-blown soap opera. That morning, I sat at the head of the dining room table with Brad, Ian, Alexis, and Dahlia.“So,” I said, resting my elbows on the table. “Someone catch me up. How badly are the rats squirming?”Brad, who looked like he hadn’t slept since the merger news dropped, cleared his throat and sat forward. “Mariela’s panicking. She’s been calling private meetings with Wilmer and Stark every time she so much as sneezes wrong. They’ve already started reaching out to the other board members, trying to rally backup, but it’s sloppy. They’re getting desperate.” “That’s exactly what I was hoping for.” I said, pleased.“They’re

    {Dominic}I pressed the intercom button on Ryker’s desk and leaned forward. “Rachael, have the board convene in the boardroom conference room. I’ll be there shortly.”“Yes, Mr. Bloodhound,” she chirped, her voice warbling ever so slightly. She was probably already picturing every nightmare scenario that involved this sudden board meeting and me walking through the doors like I hadn’t ghosted this company for weeks.I opened the drawer with Ryker’s stupid brass wolf-head keychain still dangling from it and pulled out the mock merger proposal he'd spent two nights perfecting.With the paper in hand, I straightened my blazer, smoothed back my hair, and stepped out of the office.The boardroom was just across the hall, its long glass walls giving an unnecessarily perfect view of Crownshaven’s skyline. Inside, a handful of faces snapped toward me as I entered. Some looked pale, some looked eager, and some looked just plain confused.Mariela was perched at the end like a crow waiting to pec

    {Dominic}The moment Ryker eased into the crusty-ass motel parking lot, I knew this was going to be ridiculous.“Tell me she’s not staying here,” I muttered, staring out the windshield like it had personally offended me.The place looked like a set from one of those low-budget crime dramas. There was paint peeling off the walls, doors hanging by their hinges, and a sign that flickered constantly, like it was dying a slow, painful death.Then out of the corner of my eye, I spotted my blue Jaguar and gritted my teeth.I opened the door and stepped out, boots crunching against loose gravel. “That’s my damn car.”Ryker raised an eyebrow. “And here I was, thinking maybe someone else just had the exact same electric blue, customized Jaguar.” he scoffed. “Why do you think I brought you here?”We headed for the entrance. The motel’s front office was dimly lit and smelled like bleach and cheap airfreshner. A small television buzzed behind the counter, playing some old soap opera rerun at full
