{Dominic}

I heard a faint whimper echo between my ears which made me perk up, focusing my ears to be sure I had heard right. The whimper came louder this time, but I didn’t hear it with my ears, it felt like it was a sound that only my soul could hear.

I pushed the chair I was sitting on back and crossed the room in seconds. The moment I stepped into the hallway, my eyes locked on Zane’s back. He was hunched forward slightly, with his usual scowl across his face.

But then he shifted just a fraction, and I saw her, he held her by the wrist, and pain flashed on her face before she closed her eyes.

The growl that tore out of my chest wasn’t voluntary. My body reacted before I did and I was halfway down the hall in the blink of an eye. I grabbed Zane’s arm, squeezing it with enough force that a crack echoed.

Evangeline stumbled back, but I caught her around the waist, holding her against me as Zane dropped to the marble floor, howling in agony.

“Touch her again, and I’ll break more than

    {Lyra}Dominic’s grip on my wrist tightened even more, making me wince. The usual warmth in his eyes had completely disappeared and was replaced by a strange, savage glint.“Answer me, Evangeline.” he growled deeply. There was absolutely no room for games in his voice, and I knew, right then and there, that I’d been caught.“But I can’t understand why he would act like this over a simple key, or was it more than that?” I pondered.My lips parted, ready to argue, but I thought about it and clamped my mouth shut. Lying to him wouldn’t help me in any way right now, and honestly, I really didn’t have the energy to keep beating around the bush.“I was returning the ring. That’s it.” I finally said.His brows drew together like I had just confessed to murder right in front of him. “What ring? You mean the witch’s ring?”“Yes,” I said, exhaling softly.I watched his jaw clench as he spoke, “Why did you take it?” His hand clenched my wrist tighter, and I couldn’t help it anymore.“Ow!” I yelp

    {Lyra}“First question, who was that man ?”Varen raised a brow, staring at me, “What are you talking about?”“Don’t try to be smart, Varen.” I hissed, glaring at him. “You know who I’m talking about.”Varen smirked, taking another bite of his pie, “I’m not sure I do, enlighten me.”“The man in the black and gold mask at the gala yesterday.” I snapped, earning a chuckle from Varen.“He was what you would call an acquaintance.” He said, taking another slice of his pie.I furrowed my brow at how nonchalant he was being about this whole ordeal, “Well, acquaintance or not, I don’t appreciate strangers casually approaching me, and threatening me for no fucking reason.”I heard him growl, and he paused with the fork just metres from his mouth, then he set the fork back down and looked me straight in my eyes. “Now listen here, little girl. I need to make sure that you are kept in check, and if that means surprise visits from a few of my acquantainces…” he paused, licking his lips menacingly,

    {Dominic}“Damn it, Odessa, open your eyes!” I yelled even as my voice cracked, and I shook her gently in my arms.Her body had completely gone limp, and she was slowly starting to get colder with each passing second. My annoying, lovable little sister had just fallen from the sky, and while her lips turned blue and her eyelids fluttered faintly, I knelt there, watching as she slowly slipped away.“Don’t do this,” I muttered, pulling her close to my chest. “Come on, Odessa. This isn’t funny.” I cried, but there was no response. Her fingers didn’t so much as twitch under the sound of my voice.I felt the panic inside of me grow, slowly but surely. It got to the point that I could barely even think straight anymore, and I immediately stood up. One second, I was kneeling on the grass, and the next, I was running across the estate with Odessa in my arms.The muscles in my legs bulged as I ran faster at a speed that any electric caddy could dare hope to match. I could barely feel Odessa’s

    {Dominic}The shards of glass from the table glinted on the floor but I didn’t care… I was pissed. Kael’s smug little play had revealed just how Varen had intended to play this game.“Son of a...” I hissed through my teeth and turned away before I started punching walls next.Ryker stayed quiet for a while, then he cleared his throat and asked. “So, what now?”My eyes were fixed on the far end of the conference room, and my head was a mess. “Call every single ally we’ve got,” I barked, finally glancing in his direction. “I don’t care if they’re an old acquaintance or a distant cousin of an Elder. We need all the numbers we can get.”Ryker raised a brow. “Are you sure about that, Alpha? Some of them aren’t exactly fans of the Bloodhound name.”“I would rather deal with whatever awkward reunion that comes from reaching out to them, than have our bones picked clean by those fucking monsters.”He nodded gruffly, “I’ll get the entire company involved, that way we can act quicker.” he said,

    {Lyra}I stood in front of the stone doors that led into the secret garden, holding Odessa’s iron key in one hand and the folded handkerchief in the other. My heart beat softly against my ribs, but still loud enough that I could hear it.I inhaled deeply, trying to shake off the nerves, “Alright, let’s see what you’re hiding, witch.” I mumbled and pushed the key into the small keyhole of the stone door.The door groaned as it creaked open, to reveal the hidden world that still looked as magical as the very first time I saw it. Dew clung to every petal, and the eerie breeze came with the scent of magic.But my eyes snapped right to the witch’s statue, and I narrowed my eyes. She knelt at the centre of it all, with her hands outstretched, and her fingers bare. I squeezed the handkerchief in my hand a little tighter.“The heart of the ring lies where silence breathes…” I whispered, recalling the strange parchment. My eyes narrowed on the statue. If there was a seal, then it had to be her

    {Dominic}I pushed open the old wooden door, and it creaked terribly, easily alerting Allen of my arrival. The moment I stepped through the heavy doors, the smell of burnt herbs hit me square in the face. “He really needed to crack a window in here.”“Knock next time,” he muttered, voice low.I ignored him and stepped inside. “Didn’t know I needed permission to check on a threat to the pack.”He put the quill down, stretched his long fingers, and leaned back in his chair. “We have a problem,” he said plainly.“You don’t say.”He pushed up from his seat and crossed the room, waving for me to follow. “Your men have been bringing in more bodies. At first, it was the usual corpses as always, but now…”Allen threw back a thick tarp covering a slab in the corner, revealing three bodies, each more grotesque than the last. The first looked half-rotted, the second was slightly more intact, with black veins webbing like a parasite beneath the surface. But the third made my eyes narrow; Its sk

    {Lyra}The morning sunlight streamed through the sheer curtains, and a soft breeze slipped through the slightly parted balcony doors, fluttering the curtains.Dominic had left before breakfast; he said something about a strategy meeting with a wizard, but I was too sleepy at the time to really understand what he said. When I finally mustered up the strength to wake up, I sat cross-legged on the cushioned balcony bench, sipping my tea in a floral teacup that was between my palms. Mirabel sat across from me with a tray of tiny lemon tarts and a fashion magazine in hand, humming as she flipped the pages.“This rose tea is divine,” I sighed, taking another sip. “Remind me to bribe the kitchen staff into giving me their secret.”Mirabel grinned, setting down her magazine. “I’ll certainly do my best, but I doubt they would want to reveal the one thing that’s still keeping them in a job.”I snorted delicately, then turned toward the sound of a buzz that came from inside the bedroom. Mirabe

    {Dominic}The waltz was nearing its end, and yet everyone around me was lost in the music, but then I saw her smile fall, and my eyes narrowed.The man in the gold and black mask was obviously not just another guest. A mere guest wouldn’t have Evangeline trembling like that.“Excuse me,” I said to my current dance partner, whose hand was resting just a bit too comfortably on my shoulder.Her expression fell immediately. “Already? But we’ve barely—”“I’m sorry,” I cut in, trying not to be rude. “Duty calls.”I stepped around her and made a direct line through the crowd toward Evangeline, but the crowd wasn’t kind tonight. Every few steps I took, I would encounter another lady who would block my path with a hopeful smile and an outstretched hand.“Just one dance, Alpha.”“I’d be honored...”“Surely you’ve got time for a little spin…”I offered them all the same apologetic smile as I rejected them all. “Maybe next time.” I had only one destination tonight, and it sure as hell wasn’t any

    {Lyra}Dominic’s arm had gone stiff beneath my fingers the moment Corvin refused to bow. I could feel his pulse skyrocket, and it didn’t take much to realize what he wanted.He honestly looked like he wanted to lunge at Corvin and rip him in half, but we both knew he couldn’t, at least not here, in front of all these people with their velvet cloaks and hungry eyes, just waiting for the Bloodhounds to fall apart. All it would take was one slip-up, and soon enough, they would pick at us like wolves at a carcass. So I decided to do what Dominic couldn’t, and let go of his arm.He glanced at me for a fraction of a second as I stepped forward, eyes focused on Corvin.I walked right up to him, unbothered by the stares or the faint whispers, and I watched as his hands clenched around his whiskey glass.“Well,” I said, my voice smooth and light, so it irked him even more, “You don’t look thrilled to see me, Corvin.”His lip twitched. “Forgive me, I was just surprised.”“Is that what you’re c
