{Dominic}

My body braced for the inevitable, but instead of searing pain, I was swallowed in a sudden cocoon of light. A shimmering dome bloomed around me, and the sphere struck it with a thunderclap, exploding into shards of raw darkness.

The force rattled my bones, but when the smoke cleared, I was still standing. My vision swam for a bit before finally steadying, and I noticed them beside me.

Lyra, her hands still glowed faintly, and her chest was rising with labored breaths. Grimhold stood beside her in his towering frame, with Kael at his flank.

The dome vanished as quickly as it appeared, and my knees trembled from relief and rage all at once.

Grimhold smirked down at me, his golden eyes glinting. “What’s this, Dominic? Letting me come all the way over here just to see you on your knees, bleeding like a stuck boar?”

A dry laugh scraped my throat, but it turned into a cough halfway out. Blood filled my mouth. I staggered, choking it back, and dropped hard onto one knee.

Lyra gasp

    {Dominic}The crash of our clash echoed through the fractured halls of the manor. Stone cracked under my claws as I drove Jacob back, my half-Lycan form snarling with the force of a storm. His hood had been thrown back during the fight, and in the flicker of light, I caught the gleam of his unnatural, molten gold eyes that were threaded with shadows. I swung my clawed hand, aiming to tear across his chest, but he slid under my arm with fluid, inhuman speed. His fist shot upward, glowing with dark magic, and when it connected with my ribs, pain lanced through me like fire. I stumbled, tasting blood, and soon realized that he wasn’t just using the dark magic to cast spells; he had woven it into his very bones.“Surprised?” Jacob sneered, circling me. His movements were too sharp, too measured for any natural wolf. “This is what happens when you stop fearing the dark and start embracing it.”I lunged again, the marble floor cracking under my feet. My claws grazed his shoulder, ripping f

    {Lyra}I froze, my stomach plummeting as the hooded leader pulled his cowl back. His eyes gleamed like molten iron, cruel and mocking, nothing like the charming smile he’d tossed me earlier when he leaned over the counter and flirted with me. He had acted so harmless, and I hadn’t sensed even a flicker of malice. Yet here he was, dressed in the same dark cloak, his presence radiating the same poison as the other Disciples.I couldn’t help but wonder why he hadn’t killed me then. If he wanted me dead, then why this performance? He had been close enough to strike before Dominic had even returned to me.But I had no time for answers. The three of them moved quickly, lunging forward together. Searing orbs of shadow magic sliced across the air, exploding against marble and sending shards flying. Dominic shoved me behind him, “Lyra, support Grimhold!” he barked, and then he launched himself at the leader.The two of them collided with a violent crash that made the room tremble. They tore

    {Dominic}The best way to describe the ballroom would be a sea of chaos. People shoved past me, their perfume mixing with the acrid sting of smoke still drifting in from the courtyard. Glass crunched under my boots as I forced my way forward, the crowd surging toward the exits like a flood of terrified cattle. My ears picked up screams, the clatter of overturned tables, and the relentless pounding of my own heart.“Move!” I barked, muscling past a knot of nobles too frozen in fear to get out of my way. My shoulder clipped someone, but I didn’t slow down. Every instinct screamed for me to find Lyra.The chandeliers swung above like they’d been rattled by an earthquake. Snow gusted through cracked windows. And there—across the room—I spotted her. Lyra was crouched beside Odessa, both of them tense, eyes fixed on something ahead of them. My eyes followed theirs.Three hooded figures stood on the stage, black robes pooling at their feet, and their hoods swallowing their faces, all except

    {Lyra}I was halfway to weaving through the crowd after Dominic when a hand clamped around my wrist.“Lyra! Thank the moon you’re here,” Odessa hissed, materializing from behind a cluster of laughing socialites in glittering gowns. She didn’t give me a chance to speak before looping her arm through mine. “You have to help me.”Her grip was iron, her eyes darting like she expected a monster to leap from the champagne tower.“What happened?” I asked, glancing once more toward the arched doorway where Dominic had disappeared.“There’s this guy that keeps asking me to dance. I’ve told him no every single time, but he doesn’t seem to understand the concept of go away.”I tried to twist my head for one last look toward the path Dominic had taken. My pulse was still buzzing from how he’d abandoned our dance mid-step, and curiosity clawed at me. But Odessa’s pleading eyes, wide and glassy under the golden lights, made me exhale in surrender.Whatever had made Dominic bolt had to be important…

    {Dominic}The music swelled around us, but my heartbeat drowned it out.It was a slow, decadent melody that felt like it belonged in another world. A world untouched by death threats and terrible curses. Lyra’s hand was warm in mine, and her laughter felt like a low ripple that teased the corner of my mouth into a smile that I couldn’t even fight if I wanted to.For a moment, I let myself sink into it all. The scent of her, the brush of her gown against my trousers, the glint of silver embroidery catching the chandelier light like frost embedded into silk. My wolf was finally content. Maybe almost too content. But the universe had a way of distorting my happiness, and this was no exception. It was nothing at first—just a tall figure moving along the fringe of the ballroom, half-hidden behind the sweep of chandeliers and the swirl of dancers. But then the head turned, the light caught the line of a jaw I knew far too well, and my entire body locked up.“No. It couldn’t be.”. The air
