Who are "They"?
The door slammed shut with a resounding thud, leaving her alone, as she heard the sound of the Alpha's car driving away and breathed a sigh of relief. Behind her, the back door in the kitchen opened and the sound of footsteps echoed through the empty house. The hairs on the back of her neck bristled as a cold draught accompanied the footsteps and she knew who it was, even before she turned to look into his dead, black eyes.
The man standing in her kitchen, was rangy and almost seven feet tall but his slender frame hid a strength that she knew all too well. She had been younger and afraid then but not today, today she was fearless, fearless because she had nothing left to lose. He smiled then as if reading her thoughts, a humorless smile, his startlingly white teeth incongruous against his smooth, ebony complexion.

They were found a short time later, by a search party, led by Abel, after Zeke’s vehicle had been found abandoned by the side of the road. By the time the sun rose the next morning, Zeke and Merlin had both fully recovered from their ordeal the night before. Hastily eating a hearty breakfast, they packed their lunch in backpacks and headed out, making their way deeper into the bayou. Cypress and tupelo trees grew high above the soggy undergrowth, their branches twisting and turning to reach the sunlight above, as long, silky tendrils of Spanish moss clung tenaciously to the branches and trunks.
