Mag-log inChapter 3
She got onto her horse and began moving away without even waiting for him. Her heart beating heavily against her chest. It hurt that she could not shift— especially in front of people. Her wolf was always restless within her, but shifting meant exposing who she was. Shifting was going to make it easier for her to be found out if someone paid too much attention. “We’ll go for a run later at night, she whispered to Naya. “When we’ve arrive at the camp.” Will he let you? Naya whined. "I'm not going to give him a choice." They arrived at the camp a few minutes around midnight and Theron shifted back. She could smell the metallic tang of blood even from miles away. Her jaw ticked as she watched guards set up a new tent for the king while he stood there, arms crossed over his chest. How could he be so calm and unbothered with everything going wrong? And of course he was king— people did everything for him. Unlike his father, Maera felt he didn't deserve it. With the tent set up, in the middle of the camp, and a fire lit, Theron nodded his head in her direction. "Go on in commander. I'm after you." "We are sharing a tent?" She spluttered. Theron rolled his eyes and stepped forward. "Of course. As my bodyguard, you shall have to sleep in the same tent as I do." "As your bodyguard, I think outside the tent is more appropriate." "There will be guards stationed outside already." Maera gave him a look. "How convenient." She had spent most of her time in war tents, living amongst men but it had never been a problem. The tents were usually packed so no one paid her much attention— until she had been promoted rapidly, and then she had a solo tent. "What is convenient?" Theron asked as he walked in through the flap of the tent. She followed behind him, her eyes growing accustomed to the inside. "You're ignoring me," Theron pressed. “What shall you have me say, your majesty?” Cael asked, stopping just short of the firelight, looking so relaxed. Theron hated the way Cael spoke, and how he didn’t even seem bothered by the fact that he was king. "Nothing," Theron muttered and stared in another direction. "Is there something that you want to say?" "Why do you think I have something to say? “You are watching me, Commander Cael” Theron said in a careful tone. He could feel Maera's eyes on him. “Why are you staring at me?” Maera blinked slowly. “I’m observing,” she said. “It’s my job. You’re my responsibility, your majesty.” Theron’s jaw tightened In annoyance. He wanted to look away and wanted to seem unbothered, but he couldn’t stop noticing the way Maera’s calm blue eyes followed him. “You’ll sleep soon, yes?” Maera asked after a pause. “I mean don’t you want rest?” “I plan to,” Theron said, trying to sound certain, “but I’m not sure what you have planned and why you're bothered by my sleep. You're my bodyguard and not my mother.” Maera almost rolled her eyes. She didn't like the word bodyguard. She was literally the commander of the whole Vaelmont District Army. How dare he reduce her to a bodyguard? “I’d like to let my wolf out, take a run near the paths." Theron felt his chest tighten further. For some reason he felt protective, and was worried. With the war raging outside, walks in the area weren't safe. “You are my bodyguard,” he said. “You are not to leave me alone.” Maera leaned back slightly, a faint smirk tugging at her lips. “Wow,” she said. “I didn’t think you were the clingy type. Or the kind of king who can’t protect himself without others. One would think that being a carbon copy of your father's physical appearance meant you'd be like him in every other aspect. A king who was strong enough to protect himself— even at old age, he fought and killed so many in war. I'm sure the bastard who killed him only had the advantage of being younger. But you... I guess that's not the case." Theron didn't think before he grabbed the man in his front roughly by the collar. His dark eyes bored into Maera's blue and amused ones. "Ah, anger. Well you did take after your father in that aspect." "Do not speak to me that way Commander Cael," he hissed. "As long as you and I remain in this tent, you will learn to respect me." "Respect is given to who deserves it," Maera said in a colder tone. Theron swallowed hard, suddenly aware of the proximity between them. Something about this man he held just made him want to pin Maera against the wall and kiss her hard. Do it. His wolf whispered. You've got to be crazy. I can't kiss a man. But you want to. I want to. "Bollocks!" Theron roared, pushing Maera back angrily. She fell on her back but stood up immediately. "You throw anger tantrums but demand respect? The irony. Your father got angry— but not this way." Theron opened his mouth, but the words he wanted to say stuck in his throat. He hated that he wanted to snap again, hated that he wanted to tell Cael to shut up, hated that the man could irritate him so easily. “I am not clingy,” he said finally. “And I can protect myself.” "Good. Since you can, let the elders know you will like me stationed with the rest of the army and need my expertise, not a bodyguard." "It doesn't work that way Cael." "What? Don't tell me as the supreme Alpha, you have no say in your own life." "Politics don't always work the way you think it does." "Politics works the way it's supposed to work. Like when the king was still alive and not a pampered youth putting on a goddamn robe."Maera turned to Theron. "I am going to the armory " she said."Can you ride a horse?" Theron asked her. He looked at her stomach, his eyes showing a flash of worry."I have to " Maera said. She walked out of the hall, her pace was quick even though her ribs hurt. She made her way to the level of the fort where the soldiers were busy checking their gear."Yule!" she called out. He was probably here somewhere.Yule appeared from behind a rack of spears. He was holding her sword and a clean cloak. His face looked uneasy. He did not say anything about her injury. He had seen Lady Ravvyne follow her into the room and put two and two together. He knew there was no point in arguing."Help me with the vest " Maera said.Yule stepped behind her. He pulled the leather straps of her vest until they were tight. Maera bit her lip to keep from groaning as the leather pressed against her bruised skin. He buckled the plates over her chest and shoulders."Your horse is ready Commander " Yule said. He
Ravvyne stared at her for a long second, then nodded. She reached for the leather vest and started to pull the straps tight, her face set in a grim line.“Hurry on then. I shall join you later, I need to find oht some things,” lady Ravvyne said. The bells were still ringing when Maera reached the center of the hallway. She ignored the fire in her ribs and walked right up to Theron. He was surrounded by guards, his face looking dark and angry.“What exactly is going on?” she asked, stopping him in his tracks. “They shouldn’t have come to attack so quickly.”Theron turned around quickly. He looked at her with a mix of surprise and worry. “You should be in your room, Cael.”“Answer me,” she said, her voice sounding even. “The Council, Alpha,” another messenger gasped as he ran uo to the rwo of them. He leaned his back against the stone wall. “The scouts heard the enemy shouting from across the river. They are laughing. They say the Crescent Moon Pack sent a letter two days ago begging
“Rav was crying, Theron! I walked in and she was on the floor, looking like her heart had been ripped out or maybe she had been hit,” Colin yelled, his voice echoing off the stone walls. “What was I supposed to do? I saw him standing there and I just let go. I punched him in the stomach.”“You hit an unarmed man?” Theron roared. He grabbed Colin by the collar of his robe and shoved him back against a pillar. “You used your strength on my Commander because a woman was crying?”“I thought he hurt her!” Colin shouted back, trying to pry Theron’s hands off him. He hasn’t expected Theron to be that protectuge of the commander. “You’re a fool!” Theron spat. He let go of Colin with a shove. “He is a soldier under my command. If you have a problem with him, you come to me. You don’t lay a hand on him!”Colin rolled his eyes. “How badly is he hurt!” Theron seethed. “Well…”“Well what?”“He started coughing up blood, Theron,” Colin said, his voice dropping. He looked a bit shaken. “I didn't
“Can you sit?” Ravvyne asked, reaching out to catch Maera’s elbow as she stumbled.“I think so,” Maera wheezed. She leaned her shoulder against the wall, her face looking pale in the dim light of the hallway. Every breath she took was extremely painful. She gripped her stomach, trying to hold it inside. Normally, she didn’t feel much becayse she had extra layers of protection covering her ribs, but today when her guard has been let down, Colin had punched her out of the blue. She wondered if there was anything between Ravvyne and Colin that he was so protective, but then she brushed it away. They didn’t seem like lovers— especially with Ravvyne pining after her dead brother. Maybe Colin saw her like a younger sister. Ravvyne looked around to make sure the hallway was empty. “Just a few more steps.”They moved slowly toward the commander’s quarters. Maera’s boots made a dull dragging sound on the floor. She kept her head down, her jaw clenched tight to keep from groaning. She was th
The word came out from both Maera and Ravvyne at the exact same time. It was filled with a frantic energy that made Colin freeze. He looked at the two of them, his eyes narrowing as he took in the way they were huddled together.“I’m fine,” Maera added in her deep, strained voice, clutching her ribs. She tried to steady her breathing, but the pain in her chest was like a hot iron. “It’s just a bruise. I don’t need a healer poking around my chest.”“And I can look after him,” Ravvyne said quickly, wiping her face with a trembling hand. “I have… I have medicine in my travel bags. There is no need for a scene, Colin. Truly.”Colin slowly withdrew his hand. He looked between Ravvyne’s tear-stained face and the Commander’s pale one. The story about the dead sister seemed plausible—death was common enough in these times—but the way they were acting now? It felt like they were guarding a castle under siege.“Right. Medicine in your bags,” Colin repeated, his tone dry. “If you say so.”He sto
“What?” Her voice came oht as a strained whisper, her eyes becoming glossy with unshed tears. “What do you mean… you… you’re.” “I am not Cael. I have only assumed his position— as his twin,” stated Maera swallowing hard. “Twin sister. He died five years ago.” “Oh goddess,” Ravvyne moaned, the tests spilling down her cheeks in torrents. She sank onto the floor, ger dress gathered around her as she wailed into them. “No, it can be… Cael? I…” Maera stood there awkwardly, staring at her and not sure how to comfort her. She wasn’t sure if Ravvyne was going to appreciate a hug, or if she was the type to want to be left alone in grief. The door swung open just then without a knock, revealing Colin. “Hey, Rav— what in the world did you do to her?” The sentence ended with a harsh punch to Maera’s abdomen. Her eyes widened in shock as she reeled back from the force— it shoukd have felt like nothing. Only this time around she wasn’t wearing any protective armor. The wrap she had was on he
