LOGINChapter 3
She got onto her horse and began moving away without even waiting for him. Her heart beating heavily against her chest. It hurt that she could not shift— especially in front of people. Her wolf was always restless within her, but shifting meant exposing who she was. Shifting was going to make it easier for her to be found out if someone paid too much attention. “We’ll go for a run later at night, she whispered to Naya. “When we’ve arrive at the camp.” Will he let you? Naya whined. "I'm not going to give him a choice." They arrived at the camp a few minutes around midnight and Theron shifted back. She could smell the metallic tang of blood even from miles away. Her jaw ticked as she watched guards set up a new tent for the king while he stood there, arms crossed over his chest. How could he be so calm and unbothered with everything going wrong? And of course he was king— people did everything for him. Unlike his father, Maera felt he didn't deserve it. With the tent set up, in the middle of the camp, and a fire lit, Theron nodded his head in her direction. "Go on in commander. I'm after you." "We are sharing a tent?" She spluttered. Theron rolled his eyes and stepped forward. "Of course. As my bodyguard, you shall have to sleep in the same tent as I do." "As your bodyguard, I think outside the tent is more appropriate." "There will be guards stationed outside already." Maera gave him a look. "How convenient." She had spent most of her time in war tents, living amongst men but it had never been a problem. The tents were usually packed so no one paid her much attention— until she had been promoted rapidly, and then she had a solo tent. "What is convenient?" Theron asked as he walked in through the flap of the tent. She followed behind him, her eyes growing accustomed to the inside. "You're ignoring me," Theron pressed. “What shall you have me say, your majesty?” Cael asked, stopping just short of the firelight, looking so relaxed. Theron hated the way Cael spoke, and how he didn’t even seem bothered by the fact that he was king. "Nothing," Theron muttered and stared in another direction. "Is there something that you want to say?" "Why do you think I have something to say? “You are watching me, Commander Cael” Theron said in a careful tone. He could feel Maera's eyes on him. “Why are you staring at me?” Maera blinked slowly. “I’m observing,” she said. “It’s my job. You’re my responsibility, your majesty.” Theron’s jaw tightened In annoyance. He wanted to look away and wanted to seem unbothered, but he couldn’t stop noticing the way Maera’s calm blue eyes followed him. “You’ll sleep soon, yes?” Maera asked after a pause. “I mean don’t you want rest?” “I plan to,” Theron said, trying to sound certain, “but I’m not sure what you have planned and why you're bothered by my sleep. You're my bodyguard and not my mother.” Maera almost rolled her eyes. She didn't like the word bodyguard. She was literally the commander of the whole Vaelmont District Army. How dare he reduce her to a bodyguard? “I’d like to let my wolf out, take a run near the paths." Theron felt his chest tighten further. For some reason he felt protective, and was worried. With the war raging outside, walks in the area weren't safe. “You are my bodyguard,” he said. “You are not to leave me alone.” Maera leaned back slightly, a faint smirk tugging at her lips. “Wow,” she said. “I didn’t think you were the clingy type. Or the kind of king who can’t protect himself without others. One would think that being a carbon copy of your father's physical appearance meant you'd be like him in every other aspect. A king who was strong enough to protect himself— even at old age, he fought and killed so many in war. I'm sure the bastard who killed him only had the advantage of being younger. But you... I guess that's not the case." Theron didn't think before he grabbed the man in his front roughly by the collar. His dark eyes bored into Maera's blue and amused ones. "Ah, anger. Well you did take after your father in that aspect." "Do not speak to me that way Commander Cael," he hissed. "As long as you and I remain in this tent, you will learn to respect me." "Respect is given to who deserves it," Maera said in a colder tone. Theron swallowed hard, suddenly aware of the proximity between them. Something about this man he held just made him want to pin Maera against the wall and kiss her hard. Do it. His wolf whispered. You've got to be crazy. I can't kiss a man. But you want to. I want to. "Bollocks!" Theron roared, pushing Maera back angrily. She fell on her back but stood up immediately. "You throw anger tantrums but demand respect? The irony. Your father got angry— but not this way." Theron opened his mouth, but the words he wanted to say stuck in his throat. He hated that he wanted to snap again, hated that he wanted to tell Cael to shut up, hated that the man could irritate him so easily. “I am not clingy,” he said finally. “And I can protect myself.” "Good. Since you can, let the elders know you will like me stationed with the rest of the army and need my expertise, not a bodyguard." "It doesn't work that way Cael." "What? Don't tell me as the supreme Alpha, you have no say in your own life." "Politics don't always work the way you think it does." "Politics works the way it's supposed to work. Like when the king was still alive and not a pampered youth putting on a goddamn robe."If Theron had a way to skip the emergency council meeting that had been called by his Beta, he would have. He sat in the room at the head of the table, looking bored out of his mind. His eyes wandered lazily across the room before finally settling on Beta Gerald. “I do not see Commander Cael.”“Last time I checked, Alpha Theron, Commander Cael is not part of the council.” It was Lord Hamish that replied, his nose upturned in annoyance. He leaned forward, resting his body weight on his clasped palms. “He is not meant to be here except when summoned. You give the man too many privileges.”“I am starting to think I am giving you too many privileges,” hissed Theron, not backing down. His eyes flashed a red, angry color for the briefest of seconds as they bored into Hamish’s.Beta Gerald waved his hand in an attempt to relieve the room’s tension but it was futile. “It is about our war prisoner, but first, I should like to address the division on this council since the late Alpha Theron—God
“Cael is right,” Colin said, nodding his head.“And how do we do that without the council knowing?” Theron asked. He turned around to face them, his bare chest glistening with a bit of sweat. “We need secrecy.”“Cael and I will handle going into those districts to get men who will swear their loyalty,” said Ravvyne, looking among the group. “You and Colin should figure out a secret base where they can work. Away from the council… away from the palace, perhaps.”“Loyal men,” Theron shook his head. “Loyal guards who will not go to the council.”“If we can find three loyal men, ask them about their trustworthy friends? We can hire it out, can we not?” Cael asked.“I suppose you are right.”Theron looked at Ravvyne’s hand on Maera’s arm. He looked like he wanted to knock her hand away. He breathed in deeply, his nostrils flaring. “Let Colin go with you two; I will find men myself.”“Wait, why me?” Colin asked, looking up.“Because I need someone to make sure they don’t get themselves kill
She looked up with red, teary eyes to see Cael with a worried look plastered on his face. For a moment, she thought she saw guilt flash across the commander's face. “Whatever is the matter, my lady?” he asked.Goddess, he’s so gentle, Lunara thought to herself. She had never really had a man be gentle with her or even show affection. Cael was different. She could still remember her marriage ceremony to Theron, and how Cael had been there for her, noticing what Theron hadn't.“I am quite alright,” she lied, sniffling.Maera gave her a look of disbelief. She had heard the sobs from quite a distance, and then she came to investigate only to see Lunara spiraling. Guilt prodded her heart as she remembered the night before, with Theron kissing her… with Theron in her bed.Well, he’s your mate, Naya whispered. It doesn’t justify it. She pulled out a handkerchief from her pocket and carefully wiped Lunara's eyes and the snot around her nose, then held out a hand to her.“You should not be on
Lunara blinked back tears as she watched Theron shut the door, the sound of his footsteps receding with every step he took. She was torn between staying out and going after him, but eventually, she resigned to sinking into the velvet sheets draped across the bed.Theron was increasingly hard to please as the days went by. She kept wondering if it had something to do with the war months ago. He was now burdened by the war, or if he was just getting tired of her.Sleep evaded her despite the cool night air from the rain that pounded incessantly against the rooftops. She sat up and threw the sheets away, putting on her footwear and walking out the door. Her first thought was to look for Theron, to make sure he was safe, but what was even the point? Soon, she found her legs leading her to the dungeons, the cold wind sending her hair billowing out behind her. As she got to a corridor with the walls opening on one side, she shivered as splashes of water hit her bare skin. Finally, she was a
Maera hesitated.“Yes… I would.” Theron sighed and bit his lip, looking away. He slid further onto the bed and lay back, staring up at the ceiling. After a moment, Maera moved beside him and did the same. The rain hammered harder against the roof. The curtains floated in the wind ans while Maera knew rain waa making it’s way through the windows, she chose to ignore it “It is not because I do not want to,” she added quietly.Theron turned his head toward her.“Because this is… wrong?” he asked. “Because we are men?”Maera swallowed.“It is wrong,” she said carefully. “You are the Alpha. I am a commander.”Theron scoffed softly.“Wrong?” he murmured. “The Moon Goddess says you are the perfect match for me and somehow that is wrong?”Maera exhaled slowly.“You have a wife.”“If I didnt have a wife, would things be different.”“Again, you are the alpha. You need a wife who will birth a strong heir flr ypu. And you have to abide by the rules of the pack and tradition irrespective of if t
"He passed out," Maera commented, staring at the unmoving body of the boy she found. Still, but the sound of his shallow breathing was just the only indication he was still alive.Theron dropped the tongs, breathing hard. His tunic was soaked with sweat. "Lock him up. Put two guards on the door. No one goes in or out without my word.""Yes, Alpha," the guard said.Maera went back to the dungeon three hours later. That had to be enough time for the boy to regain his consciousness. She hadn't informed Alpha Theron that she was going there—she needed to do things her own way, her own method.Theron tended to act on his impulse and anger, and it often got him nowhere. She walked down the stairs. Her lamp cast shadows that were shaky against the walls. She reached the cell and noticed the guards were not there.A slight tremor of fear coiled in her stomach. She pulled her dagger and walked to the iron bars. She looked inside and saw the boy lying on the floor, his body twisted in an unnatu
“I was tired,” Maera said coldly. “The war has a way of draining one’s appetite for festivities.”“Tired? Or simply disinterested?” another Elder chimed in, chuckling. “I’ve heard the kitchen staff placing bets. Some say you have a heart of stone. Others say… well, others say you’re looking for som
Chapter 16The Next Morning“Commander! Commander Cael, please, wait!” Yule shouted, his voice echoing off the cold stone walls of the palace corridor. He was practically sprinting, his breath coming in short, ragged puffs that turned to mist in the morning air.“Yule? What is the matter with you?”
Chapter 15 Yule stayed in a corner throughout the course of the banquet watching Commander Cæl be his usual charming self without knowing it. He watched how the ladies swarmed him and all wanted to be in his bed but Cæl certainly had no idea what was going on on their minds because he gracefully i
Chapter 14 She walked away from the Delta bedore he could say anything more. Since she has come here, she hates how the Althara Council did their things. She has tried excusing it at first— that all kf this was becayse the supreme alpha had died, but now she knew better. “Commander,” Lunara soft
