The Night Before

The week went by like most weeks in the De Luca house before a big event, with a slow tension building. Everyone's nerves were strained beneath a veneer of politeness.

Leon stood in front of the mirror in his tailor's fitting room, arms extended at his sides as the seamstress pinned the final touches onto his jacket. It was black and sharply cut, with a deep emerald thread sewn so subtly into the lapel that it only caught the light when he moved. His mother had picked the color. “De Luca green,” she had said, as if it were obvious, as if there had been no other option.

"Turn," the seamstress said softly. Leon turned, watching his reflection with a sense of distant discomfort.

The collar was high. Higher than fashion dictated. It was high enough to conceal what needed hiding, and his mother hadn't questioned his request. She just assumed it was about looking elegant for the Ashworth family's biggest event of the year and accepted it.

"You look wonderful," Elena said from the chair by the window, gazing at her son with the pride of a mother who didn't truly understand what she was seeing. "Adrian will be speechless."

Leon met his own eyes in the mirror and stayed silent.

Three days before the gala, the ache became too strong to hide behind long sleeves and high collars alone.

It came in waves, unpredictable and sudden, catching him off guard during dinner or in the middle of a conversation with his mother about seating plans. He learned to spot the first sign of a tightening low in his chest, like a breath he couldn't release and he excused himself before it showed on his face.

He was in the garden three days out, sitting on the low stone bench near the fountain that he used to escape to as a child, when Rafael found him.

"You've been hiding out here a lot lately." Rafael sat down next to him without asking, stretching his legs out like he belonged there. "Is the gala prep stressing you out? Or is it something else?"

"Just tired."

"You're always tired these days." Rafael tilted his head, studying him with that same sharp, assessing look he had worn since the morning after the club. That morning, Leon had come home in a car he had called himself, refusing to explain where he had been the night before. "You know, for someone marrying into one of the wealthiest families in the city, you don't seem very happy about it."

"I'm happy." Leon focused on the fountain.

"Sure." Rafael smiled, but something unkind lurked beneath it. "You know, if you ever decide you don't want him, you could just say so. I'm sure someone else in this family would be thrilled to take your place."

Leon looked at him then, finally understanding the meaning behind Rafael's tone. "Is that what this is about?"

"I don't know what you mean." Rafael stood, brushing off his trousers and returning to his carefree attitude. "I'll see you at the gala, cousin. Try not to faint on anyone important this time."

He left before Leon could respond, and Leon stayed alone by the fountain a while longer. The ache in his chest continued its slow, steady rhythm, indifferent to everything else around it.

Across the city, Damian stood in his own fitting room while a tailor made the final adjustments to a jacket he couldn’t remember picking the fabric for. Marco had managed that, as he did with most things that didn’t require Damian's direct attention. It was black, structured, and cut close through the shoulders.

The details didn’t matter to him, except that in four days, he would be in a room with a boy whose absence had somehow become louder than most people’s presence.

"Sir." Marco appeared in the doorway, tablet in hand, waiting for the tailor to step back before continuing. "The De Luca family has confirmed their attendance. The full guest list came in this morning."

"Read it."

Marco scrolled through. "Alessandro and Elena De Luca. Their son Leon." A pause. "His fiancé, Adrian Castellano, will also be there confirmed separately under the Castellano party."

Damian's reflection stayed unchanged, though something behind his eyes grew still.

"There's also a nephew," Marco added. "Rafael De Luca. He’s a minor branch of the family, but he'll be there."

"I don't care about the nephew." Damian shrugged out of the jacket, handing it back to the tailor without looking at him. "I want to know where the De Luca party will be seated. Which side of the hall? Whether Sharmayne has found anything yet."

"She hasn't reached out."

"Then call her again."

Marco hesitated, as he had for the past week, before every question involving Leon De Luca's name. "Sir—can I ask what you’re planning, exactly? Once you're both in the same room?"

Damian didn’t respond for a long moment. He stood at the window, gazing out at the city he had spent his whole life trying to control. For the first time in longer than he could remember, he genuinely didn’t know the answer.

"I don't know," he finally admitted, his voice low, almost to himself. "I just know I need to see him."

The night before the gala, Leon lay awake again. The mark pulsed beneath his collarbone in the dark, and he found himself thinking for the first time since that morning three weeks ago when he had walked out of Damian's private room and told himself it would never happen again about what it would be like to stop running from it.

He didn’t let the thought finish. He turned onto his side, pressed a hand over the mark as if he could still the feeling, and waited for sleep that wouldn’t come. Meanwhile, across the city, in a room just as dark, Damian Moretti lay awake, staring at a ceiling that offered no answers either. They were both trapped in the same slow, aching countdown toward a room neither of them could avoid entering.

  • The Alpha's Forbidden Heir   The Cousin Who Heard Too Much

Leon sprawled out on his bed, eyes locked on the ceiling, one hand splayed over his stomach a habit he couldn’t seem to break. His phone buzzed to life beside him, the screen lighting up with Damian’s name.He let it ring. Twice. He just needed a second maybe two to brace himself. When he finally answered, Damian didn’t bother with pleasantries. Just, “Did you make up your mind?”Leon kept his voice careful, almost a whisper. No one was around to overhear, but old instincts die hard. “I need more time. I can’t just make a call like this in a day.”Damian sounded wired, all nerves. He’d stopped hiding it. “We’re running out of time, Leon. My grandfather doesn’t have the luxury of me dragging this out. Every day—”Leon snapped, sharper than he intended. “I know. I know what’s at stake for you. I need you to think about what’s at stake for me, too.”There was a pause. Damian’s tone softened, just a hair. “I get it. I’m not pushing for a decision right now. I just need to know you’re rea

  • The Alpha's Forbidden Heir   The Truth He Couldn’t Say

Morning rolled in gray and quiet. Leon got dressed, slow and distracted, his thoughts circling back to every word he’d been rehearsing all night none of them fit the way he wanted. It felt a lot like picking out wedding invitations: you stare and compare, but nothing feels right. He’d gone over a dozen different versions of this talk, but daylight didn’t make it any easier. He drove himself there. He didn’t want anyone else around for this for once, not even a silent bodyguard staring straight ahead.Adrian’s apartment door swung open before Leon could finish his first knock. Clearly, he’d been standing nearby, waiting in case this exact moment happened. His whole face lit up, so open and happy that it almost hurt.“Hey, you.” Adrian’s smile split wide, warm and genuine. “I didn’t know you were coming by.”Leon forced his voice to stay calm. “Yeah. Spur of the moment.”Adrian wrapped him in a hug before he could even blink. It was so familiar, so easy, Leon let himself lean into it

  • The Alpha's Forbidden Heir   What I Have to Do

Leon sat by his bedroom window that evening with his knees drawn to his chest, watching the last light fade over the garden, and let himself, for the first time since walking out of that hospital, actually feel the shape of what he'd almost done. I could have ended it today. The thought didn't come with relief the way he'd expected it to. It came with something closer to horror, a cold understanding of how close he'd walked to a decision he wasn't sure, now, that he could have lived with. He pressed a hand flat against his stomach, still flat, still giving nothing away, and felt something there that had nothing to do with the pregnancy's physical symptoms and everything to do with the fact that some part of him, quiet and stubborn, had wanted to keep this child since the moment he'd seen those two lines on the test strip. I want it. The thought arrived plain and unguarded, and once it had, he couldn't take it back or pretend he hadn't thought it. I want the baby. God help me, I

Leon pulled his hand away first, wiping his face on his wrist in a fast, hard sweep, like he hated showing any weakness. He glared up at Damian. “What does that even mean? Give you time?” His voice was sharp, nearly hostile. “You show up out of the blue, say don’t kill our child, and then what, Damian? What do you actually want from me?”Damian pushed himself to his feet, slow but steady, and took a step back. He didn’t look away. His eyes stayed fixed on Leon, intense and tired all at once. “I want to keep the child. My grandfather’s dying, Leon. He needs an heir. I’ve got no one.” His voice was flat, stripped down to the truth. “I never wanted this, I didn’t plan for any of it, but the child exists now. I’m not letting you get rid of something that’s half mine just because you’re afraid of your father.”Leon’s heart clenched. The air in his chest felt thin and sharp. “So it's about an heir. That’s all?”Damian’s jaw tightened. “No. It's about making sure the baby lives. I won’t let

The hospital doors slid open before he'd even reached them. Damian didn't remember the elevator. He didn't remember parking, or the walk in from the car, or anything between the restaurant and this hallway, white and too bright, antiseptic doing nothing to cover the pull dragging him forward like a hook set behind his ribs. A nurse at the desk looked up and froze mid-signature. Two men by the vending machines stepped back against the wall without seeming to notice they'd done it. He knew, in some distant way, that he'd stopped holding himself in check the second he walked through those doors. Thirty-one years of training gone in an instant. He didn't try to rein it in. He couldn't. Left. It's left. He didn't know how he knew that. He just turned down the private wing like his feet had a map his head never got a copy of, past a doctor who flattened himself against the wall as Damian went by, breathing like he'd nearly been hit by a car. The pull sharpened outside a door near th

  • The Alpha's Forbidden Heir   The Bond Knows

Leon POVThe hospital wing felt like it was holding its breath. Too quiet, the kind of hush that made me want to fill the space with noise, but I just trailed after the nurse, my sneakers squeaking on the pale floors. She didn’t seem to know me, and I sure didn’t know her. She didn’t look up, just gestured toward the exam room."Dr. Whitmore will be in shortly," she said in this brisk but not unkind voice. She smiled, but it was practiced, like she had places to be. "Change whenever you're ready. There's no rush."That was a lie. There’s always a rush when your whole life is balanced on the edge of a single morning, but I only nodded. The door closed behind her with a soft click, and now it was just me, the gown, and that high-pitched hum from the overhead lights. Five days brought me here five days pretending to be fine, buttoning my shirts all the way, hiding everything from people who deserved the truth. Now it was just the paper waiting for my scribble, my own shaking hands.I
