I had so many questions spinning through my mind that they began to overlap, tangling into knots I couldn’t unravel. But I didn’t know how to ask any of them so I told myself to wait and observe. Because maybe Agnes returning meant she was here to take back her position as Pearl’s nanny.

I should've felt relieved and excited because it meant my work here was done. It meant I could finally return to the werewolf realm, to my Pack, and to my normal life. So why did my chest ache?

Why does the idea of leaving Pearl feel like someone is gently pulling something out of me? Why does it hurt this much? Has Pearl grown on me to this extent?

I stood there frozen, uncertain of what to do, feeling like a stranger in a room filled with people who all seemed to know each other as Mira walked forward and handed Agnes the cup of water. Agnes downed it in one gulp, wiped her mouth, and turned to Mira. “Who’s that?” She asked loudly, referring to me, like I was a piece of furniture.
