Wren

Adrien Conrad fills the doorway as if he owns it, and behind him, I count three more. Two security types in dark suits. And Serena, standing just behind her father with her arms crossed and her face like carved stone, staring at me like she's trying to figure out what kind of insect I am.

I step back on instinct. Bron's hand catches mine before I get more than a few inches, pulling me half behind him like his body's a wall he's already decided to put between me and everyone in that doorway.

"Get out of my study," Bron says. His voice has gone flat and cold, nothing like it sounded five minutes ago.

"Your study." Adrien laughs, short and humorless. "You mean the study where I just watched my daughter's fiancé put his hands on a member of the kitchen staff."

"She's not staff." The lie comes out of Bron so fast and so smooth I almost believe it myself. "She's a guest."

"Don't." Adrien's voice cracks like a whip. "Don't stand there and insult my intelligence on top of everything else tonight. I know exactly what she is. Half the pack does by now, thanks to about two hundred phones. What I don't know is what you're planning to do about it."

"That's not your business,” Bron replies. His tone serious.

"It became my business the moment your eyes went silver at my daughter's engagement party." He steps further into the room, and the two security men follow, spreading out like they're boxing us in on purpose. "You have a treaty with my family, Alpha Ashborn. Signed, witnessed, public. You don't get to shrug that off because your wolf decided he liked a servant girl better."

"Watch how you talk about her.” He threatens.

"Or what?" Adrien's eyes flick to me, and something about the way he looks at me makes my skin crawl, cold and assessing, like he's already doing math on how much I'm worth to him as a problem to be handled.

"You'll fight me over a girl whose name you don't even know? Ask her yourself, Alpha. Ask her what happens to nameless kitchen girls who get caught in the middle of pack politics. I don't think you'll like the answer.” He says.

My whole chest goes tight. Bron's grip on my hand tightens too, like he can feel it, and maybe he can; maybe that's part of what this bond even is.

"I'm not letting anyone touch her," Bron says, low and hard, and I believe him; I actually believe him, which terrifies me more than anything Adrien's said so far.

Because I know exactly what happens next if he means it. I've spent thirteen years learning how pack politics actually work, watching from doorways and kitchen corners, invisible on purpose.

I know what it costs when someone powerful decides to protect someone like me out loud, in public, in front of witnesses who'll go straight back to their own packs with the story. It doesn't cost him nothing. It costs him everything, and it costs the people around him worse.

Serena hasn't said a single word this whole time. She's just watching, arms crossed, and something about her total silence scares me more than her father's shouting.

"There's a war sitting in this room right now," Adrien says, quieter now, which somehow makes it worse. "You understand that, don't you, Alpha? You reject the bond tonight, cleanly, publicly, and this stays contained. A moment of confusion, a young Alpha overwhelmed by tradition, easily explained away. You don’t…” He lets that hang, lets the silence do the threatening for him. "My pack has resources yours doesn't want tested. Ask your father how many of my ships move through waters he needs open."

Bron doesn't answer. His jaw's locked so tight I can see the muscle jump.

And I understand, standing there with my hand still caught in his, that he's not going to say the words. He'd rather stand in this room and let Adrien Conrad threaten a war than let go of me first, and that, that's the part that finally breaks something loose in my chest.

Because I've never once in my life had anything worth this much. And the first thing I'm ever handed worth this much is going to get him destroyed, and everyone around him along with it, and I am not going to be the reason that happens.

"I reject the bond,” the words come out of me before I even finish deciding to say them, flat and fast, like ripping something off before I can think better of it.

The room goes dead silent.

Bron's hand goes slack around mine. I feel it happen; I actually feel something tear, deep under my ribs, sharp enough that my knees nearly buckle, like the bond itself is fighting the words as they leave my mouth.

"What did you just say?” Bron's voice isn't cold anymore. It isn't anything I have words for.

"I reject it." I make myself say it again, make myself look at him even though every part of me is screaming not to. "I don't want this. I don't want you. I'm not worth a war, and I'm definitely not worth whatever your father's going to do to me once he decides I'm a liability instead of a mistake.” I let out.

"That's not true, and you know it isn’t…” he starts saying, but I stop him.

"It doesn't matter if it's true." My voice cracks straight down the middle, and I hate it, hate that he gets to hear it crack, hate that Adrien's watching this happen with something close to satisfaction on his face. "It's done. I said it. That's how it works, right? I reject you."

Bron doesn't move. Doesn't speak. He just stares at me like I hit him, actually hit him, and some small, stupid, wrecked part of me wants to take it all back immediately, wants to grab the words out of the air and shove them back down my own throat before they finish doing whatever they're doing to him.

I don't. I turn instead, before I can lose my nerve, before Adrien's smug satisfaction or Serena's carved-stone silence can convince me to stay and watch what I just did settle into his face.

Briar's waiting exactly where I left her, and the second she sees my face she doesn't ask questions, just grabs my arm and pulls me straight past all of them, past the security men who don't even try to stop us, out into the hallway and down the narrow staff stairs two at a time.

I don't look back. I can't. If I look back, I don't think I make it out that door.

We don't stop running until we're outside, past the kitchen entrance, out into the cold night air with the party still glowing gold behind us through every window, and I finally let myself stop, hands braced on my knees, chest heaving, that torn feeling under my ribs settling into something raw and endless.

"Okay," Briar says, breathless beside me. "Okay, that was insane. That was actually insane, Wren. Do you understand what you just did back there? You stood in a room with the actual Alpha and Adrien Conrad and just… just torched the whole thing to the ground in like four sentences. I've never seen anything like that in my life. You didn't even blink. I would've been on the floor. I think I need to sit down just from watching it happen."

I don't answer her. I can't. My whole chest feels hollowed out, scraped clean, and underneath the numbness there's a small, terrible ache that doesn't feel like relief at all, no matter how much it should.

"Seriously, though." Briar straightens up, studying my face properly for the first time since we started running, and whatever she sees there makes her stop talking fast, her excitement draining into something more careful. "Wren. Hey. You okay?"

I open my mouth to say yes. Nothing comes out.

Because somewhere back in that study, I can still feel it, faint, distant, but there, like a phone line that's been cut but hasn't quite gone dead. A pull, weaker now, wrong now, twisted into something that aches instead of burns.

And underneath it, so quiet I almost miss it, something that feels less like a bond breaking and more like a warning. “I, Wren, reject the bond,” I whisper, looking at the moon, hoping the Moon Goddess can forgive me.

WrenI don't remember the walk back to staff housing. One second we're outside the pack house with the party still glowing behind us, and the next I'm sitting on the edge of my own bed with my shoes still on, staring at a wall I've stared at a thousand times before and somehow don't recognize right now.Briar hasn't stopped talking since we got in the door.“…and I mean it, Wren, I've never seen anything like it. You didn't even flinch. Adrien freaking Conrad, standing right there, and you just looked him dead in the eye and torched the whole thing down. I would've thrown up. I think I actually might throw up right now just from watching it happen. I'm serious, my hands are still shaking…”“Briar." I let out. “…and Serena's face, oh my god, did you see her face? She looked like somebody slapped her; I don't even think she knows what to do with herself right now, and Bron just standing there like…”"Briar."She stops. Finally looks at me properly instead of pacing a track into my floo

BronRejection doesn't feel like heartbreak. I want to be clear about that, because every story I ever heard growing up made it sound like heartbreak, like something soft and sad you cry about in private. It's not that. It's like getting gutted. The second the words leave her mouth, something inside my chest just rips. Not metaphorically. I actually feel it tear, deep under my ribs, right where the bond's been burning since the second I saw her across that ballroom, and my knees nearly buckle right there in front of Adrien Conrad and his security and my own fiancée standing three feet away watching it happen.I don't fall. I refuse to give him that. But I can't speak either. I just stand there while she turns and walks out the door, and every step she takes away from me feels like something's being pulled out of my chest by the root."Well." Adrien's voice cuts through the ringing in my ears, satisfied in a way that makes me want to put my fist through the wall behind him. "That resol

WrenI turn around expecting security. A guard. Somebody big, somebody scary, somebody sent to drag me back downstairs and hand me over to whoever wants to yell at me first.I do not expect a woman standing three steps down in a pale blue dress, hands folded in front of her like she's waiting for tea instead of chasing down a servant girl at midnight. She's older, maybe mid-fifties, with silver-blonde hair loose around her shoulders instead of pinned up like every other woman at that party. Her eyes are washed-out blue, and they're locked on me with an intensity that doesn't match how calm the rest of her looks, like she's been waiting her whole life for this exact moment and is somehow still not sure she believes it's happening.Briar steps in front of me anyway, arms out, because Briar doesn't care who you are, apparently, even if you're a middle-aged woman in pearls."You're not taking her anywhere," Briar says."I'm not here to take her anywhere she doesn't want to go." The woman'

WrenI feel it before I understand what it is.One second I'm standing where I'm supposed to stand, back against the wall in the kitchen hallway with the rest of the catering staff, watching some rich guy get engaged through a gap in the doorway because Briar wanted to see the dress. The next second there's a burn under my ribs so bad I almost drop the tray I'm still holding."Ow," I say out loud, stupid, because that's the best my brain can come up with."You okay?" Briar's next to me, elbow against mine. She doesn't look at me yet, still watching the ballroom, still chewing gum like nothing's wrong."Something hurts,” I say. "Something hurts," she repeats, flat, like I said something dumb. Then she actually looks at me, and her face changes fast. "Wren. You're white as a sheet."I don't answer her because I can't. The burn's spreading now, up into my chest, up into my throat, and under the pain there's this pull, this yank, like a fishhook caught right behind my sternum and somethi

  • The Alpha's Forbidden Omega   Chapter 2 - Bron

BronMy father finds me in the west study eleven minutes after the music stops.Eleven minutes. That's how long it took the band to fumble back into a song, how long it took Adrien to smile at the cameras and say something smooth about "overwhelming emotion" like I'd just teared up over a toast. That's how long the security team took to clear the ballroom and get me out of three hundred pairs of eyes. Eleven minutes, and my father still walks in like he's been standing outside the whole time, arms crossed, face like a closed door."Sit down," he says. I don't sit down. "Bron.""I'm fine standing.” I let out. He looks at me the way he's looked at me my whole life, like I'm a project that keeps almost working. He's still in his tux, tie loosened, one hand braced on the back of the leather chair like he's deciding whether to throw it at me or sit in it."Do you have any idea," he says, low, "what you just did to this family?""I didn't do anything. It happened to me.” I reply. "That's
