(Calla’s POV)

The deeper we moved inside , the more then tension rose. And the air was thick with copper, ash, and old power.

My lungs burned with every breath, but it wasn’t just the stench of magic; it was fear sharpening into fury. Somewhere below, my son’s heartbeat fluttered like a trapped bird. I felt it through the thin thread of my wolf’s senses, and it drove me forward faster than reason.

Rowan moved ahead of me, a dark shape with silver eyes in the dim light, sword drawn and steady. His presence was a wall between me and the abyss, yet also a spark feeding my anger. Our bond vibrated, our wolves pacing beneath our skin. For years we had been apart, but here—in this labyrinth built on betrayal—we were again a unit, fighting toward the same heartbeat.

We reached the final stair. Heat rolled up from below, along with low chanting that twisted my stomach. Freya’s voice whispered in my mind, the circle will bind him, it will drain him; hurry. I tightened my grip on the pistol in

(Rowan's POV)I'd grown accustomed to the cadence of her breathing next to me once more, a soft, steady beat that reminded me of the ways in which we'd made it through another night, another fight, another attempt on the part of the world to destroy us.But this morning, the cadence was off. Shallow. Unstable. My neck hair bristled before I was even able to open my eyes. When I did, Calla lay on her side, her silver hair plastered to her wet face, her complexion pale as ice. The image stole the breath from my body."Calla?" My voice cracked like dry wood. I leaned forward, sitting up hastily, my hand flying out to her forehead. Warm and wet like fire on ice.Her eyelashes fluttered but didn't lift. "Just tired," she whispered, so softly I could barely hear.Tired. My belly tied itself into knots. This was not tired. This was something eating away at her inside out.No, I growled, more to myself than to her. "No, no, no."I swept her up before I could consider it a mistake, her body ab

  • The Alpha’s Forgotten Bride   Chapter 111: Publicly Whipped

(Rowan's POV)I'd prayed the mountain air on the drive back would cool the flame in my blood, but it hadn't.Every mile down to the pack lands simply fed it more. By the time we pulled through the gates, Calla sleeping in the backseat with Asher curled up against her, I was burning with a barely contained rage. They had taken years from me. They had taken her. They had taken my son's starting point, his first words, his first steps. They had incinerated my memories to ash and smoke and I was left wandering about in someone else's life. And as I shed blood for them, dazed and lost, they had sat around our council chamber smiling as though they were the guardians of our people. No more.Knox stood beside the gates with three dozen warriors, their faces stern in the predawn shadows. The instant our convoy stopped, he fell into step beside me, his calmness grounding me. "They're in the holding cells," he whispered. "All of them. Elira too."I nodded once, a black, satisfied weight droppi

(Calla's POV)I did not know silence could be so heavy. The ritual room, that gushing, hissing well of magic seconds before, was now emptiness of stone and ash alone. Walls still whispered softly with the residue of magic which had foamed between them, but the fire gone out. Smoked herbs lingered thick in the air, bitter and stinging at the base of my neck.My ears still rang with the ring of my own scream, the scream that had been torn from me when magic had burst forth from me and killed Cyrus dead as a rock.I braced my legs stiff and attempted to make them move. My knees protested in pain to bend, my body entreating them to bend and be through with it, but I locked them stiff. There were two people in this room who counted, and until I had double-verified that they were alive, I was not giving up.Rowan was pinned under the debris of a shattered pillar, his wide shoulders out in front of him, his tunic ripped crimson where the sword had sliced through. He'd gone ahead, run forw

  • The Alpha’s Forgotten Bride   Chapter 109: Cyrus Ruin?

(Calla's POV) Shadows attacked us like living whips, faster and hungrier than ever. This time, I tried to summon a shield of light with the last remnants of magic, shaking as I summoned what little I had left, but the light wavered, weak and spasmodic, like a candle flame dying. My knees hit the cold stone floor with a shock that jarred my teeth free. “Stay with me,” Rowan’s voice rasped, rough but steady. His fingers closed around mine, grounding me even as the weight of the circle pressed against my chest. His grip was iron, a wordless plea and a promise: I’m not letting go. Across the chamber, Cyrus smiled, all sharp teeth and shadow. “You’re finished,” he purred, as if savoring the words. Then the shadow-chains lunged again. I scarcely noticed movement before Rowan moved. One instant he stood beside me, slouching, and the next he was between me and whatever was there, sword held up in both hands, body set as a shield. "Rowan!" I roared, but my cry was drowned out under the

  • The Alpha’s Forgotten Bride   Chapter 107: Asher First.

(Rowan's POV)The mountain highway narrowed to a strip of gravel so thin our SUV barely squeezed by, the tires crunching gently as I stopped. Before us stretched pines and fog, the trees thick enough to swallow the darkness in the sky. A quiet broken only by the tick of the cooling engine and the gentle, low breathing of the wolves in the back.My claws were tingling beneath my skin as I switched off the headlights and let the SUV roll the last few metres in blackness.Every fibre in me was crying out.The air under the night was bitter on my tongue, metallic, electric. Under the earth and pine aroma was something worse, something more bitter: Cyrus's corruption, seeping into the night like rot in a corpse. Old blood. Rotten magic. Betrayal that had never stopped to rot.Calla was sitting next to me, her face gently lit by the frosty, silver spatter of moonlight streaming in through the windshield. Her knuckles were clenched on the carved bone pendant Freya had thrust into her palm b
